Diseases 48

Disease · 149 plantsAnthracnoseLight brown to dark brown round lesions with sharp margins form on leaves and fruit, slightly sunken in the center. In wet weather salmon-pink slimy spore masses ooze out on the lesions.Disease · 36 plantsBacterial CankerLeaf margins scorch and die back, and splitting the stem reveals browned vascular tissue. Scabby, bird's-eye lesions form on fruit and shoots.Disease · 68 plantsBacterial Soft RotThe crown or the head becomes water-soaked and soft, then collapses into a slimy mush. The rotting tissue gives off a distinctive foul odor.Disease · 7 plantsBacterial SpeckSmall dark brown spots ringed by a yellow halo form on the leaves, and heavy infection burns off the whole leaf. Fruit carries scattered black pinpoint specks.Disease · 79 plantsBacterial SpotSmall water-soaked spots appear on the leaves, later turning brown with yellowing around them. Fruit develops water-soaked or scabby spots from which rot spreads.Disease · 43 plantsBacterial WiltLeaves wilt while still green during the day and recover in the morning and evening; after a few days of this the plant dies. Cut the stem and stand it in water and a milky white bacterial ooze streams out in threads.Disease · 47 plantsBlack RotV-shaped yellowing spreads inward from the leaf margins and the veins darken into a black network. As it advances the whole plant wilts and dies.Disease · 41 plantsBlack SpotOn roses, dark brown lesions with radiating edges form on the leaves, which yellow around them and drop. On pear, sooty black lesions appear on leaves, fruit and the calyx of young fruit, deforming the fruit.Disease · 79 plantsBrown Leaf SpotSmall light brown to gray-brown spots form on the leaves and enlarge into irregular lesions. When they merge the whole leaf dies and plant vigor drops sharply.Disease · 17 plantsBrown RotBlossoms brown and die, and round brown lesions on fruit expand rapidly. Grayish white powdery mold forms in concentric rings on the lesion and the fruit finally dries into a hard mummy.Disease · 36 plantsCitrus MelanoseTiny dark brown specks are scattered over fruit and leaves, sometimes clustering into tear-streaks or a sandpaper texture. Heavy infection makes the rind rough and badly cuts appearance value.Disease · 12 plantsClubrootLeaves wilt during the day and recover morning and evening, and growth is markedly poor. Pull the plant and the roots carry many spindle-shaped or irregular galls.Disease · 55 plantsCrown GallIrregular galls form at the crown and on the roots, gradually enlarging and turning woody. They block the flow of water and nutrients, so the plant loses vigor and may die.Disease · 4 plantsCucumber Green Mottle MosaicDark green blotches and raised mosaic appear on the leaves. The fruit surface becomes mottled and the flesh discolors, spoiling the flavor.Disease · 18 plantsCucumber Mosaic VirusNew leaves show a yellow-green mosaic, crinkle, and the whole plant becomes stunted. Fruit colors unevenly and grows misshapen.Disease · 74 plantsDamping-offThe stem pinches in at soil level, turning water-soaked to brown and thin, and the seedling topples over. Infection before emergence makes the stand uneven with missing plants.Disease · 64 plantsDowny MildewPale yellow to yellow-brown angular lesions form on the upper leaf surface with a gray-purple mold in the matching spot underneath. Lesions merge, the leaves die back and the plant declines early.Disease · 43 plantsFusarium WiltLower leaves wilt during the day and recover morning and evening, and this cycle repeats as the plant dies back. Cutting the stem reveals characteristic browning of the vascular tissue.Disease · 11 plantsFusarium Wilt of CucurbitsPart of the vine wilts during the day and eventually the whole plant dies. The stem splits lengthwise near the soil and exudes gum, and the vascular tissue is browned when cut.Disease · 41 plantsFusarium YellowsYellowing starts on the lower leaves, the petioles twist and the plant leans to one side. Vascular tissue browns, growth stops, and heading vegetables may die without ever forming a head.Disease · 145 plantsGray MoldWater-soaked brown lesions form on flowers, fruit and leaves, densely covered by a fuzzy gray mold. Fruit rots and drops, and decay continues in storage after harvest.Disease · 8 plantsGummy Stem BlightGray-brown lesions form at stem nodes and the crown, exuding brown gum and splitting lengthwise. Round to V-shaped brown lesions form on leaves, dotted with small black fruiting bodies.Disease · 110 plantsLate BlightDark green water-soaked lesions appear on the leaves and expand quickly into brown dead tissue. White mold forms on the underside and at the lesion edge, and dark brown lesions spread to stems and fruit.Disease · 100 plantsLeaf SpotSmall round brown to gray-white lesions appear on the lower leaves, the centers turning gray with tiny black specks. As they multiply the leaf yellows and drops early.Disease · 3 plantsMelon Yellow Spot VirusNumerous small yellow spots appear on the leaves and later turn necrotic so the leaf dies. Growth stalls and fruit fails to size up or sweeten.Disease · 2 plantsOnion Yellow DwarfYellow streaks appear along the leaves, which twist and lodge easily. The whole plant is stunted and the bulb and leaf sheaths bulk up very poorly.Disease · 5 plantsPeach Leaf CurlNew leaves thicken and pucker into waves and turn red to pale pink. They later bloom with a white powder, brown, and drop, weakening the tree.Disease · 4 plantsPear RustRound orange-red lesions form on the upper leaf surface with small black specks in the center. The underside of the lesion swells into hair-like tubes, and heavy infection causes leaf drop and loss of vigor.Disease · 5 plantsPepper Mild Mottle VirusLeaves become faintly variegated and mottled and crinkle slightly. Fruit stays small, is bumpy and unevenly colored, and fewer fruits set.Disease · 6 plantsPotato LeafrollLower leaves roll inward into tubes and become stiff and leathery. The plant is stunted and yellowed, and tubers are small and few.Disease · 8 plantsPotato Virus YMosaic, crinkling and vein necrosis appear on the leaves and the lower leaves die back. The plant is stunted and yield falls; some strains leave necrotic rings on the tuber surface.Disease · 142 plantsPowdery MildewWhite patches appear scattered on the upper leaf surface at first, then the whole leaf is coated in a white powder. Leaves later yellow, brown and die back, and reduced photosynthesis cuts growth and yield.Disease · 49 plantsRing RotThe bark of branches and trunk becomes rough and warty, serving as the inoculum source. Fruit develops round brown lesions that soften and rot in concentric rings.Disease · 71 plantsRoot RotFine roots rot brown to blackish brown, growth stops and the lower leaves yellow. The plant wilts easily in the daytime and eventually dies outright.Disease · 69 plantsRustSmall raised orange-yellow to red-brown pustules form on both leaf surfaces, then rupture and release powdery spores. Heavy infection yellows the leaves and kills them early.Disease · 122 plantsSclerotinia RotThe crown, stem or head rots in a water-soaked way and is covered in white cottony mycelium. Black sclerotia later form inside and on the surface, and the plant wilts and dies.Disease · 38 plantsSooty MoldA thin black sooty mold spreads over the upper leaf surface, shoots and fruit. It does not invade the tissue itself, but it blocks photosynthesis and badly spoils appearance.Disease · 114 plantsSouthern BlightThe stem rots at soil level and white silky mycelium spreads over the crown and the surrounding soil surface. Brown sclerotia the size of rapeseed then form and the plant wilts and dies rapidly.Disease · 8 plantsTobacco Mosaic VirusNew leaves show a clear light-and-dark green mosaic, become wavy and stay small. Growth stalls and fruit fails to size up properly.Disease · 4 plantsTomato Leaf MoldPale yellow indistinct patches form on the upper leaf surface with a velvety gray-brown mold underneath. Leaves die back from the bottom up, and fruit set and sizing suffer.Disease · 8 plantsTomato Mosaic VirusLight and dark mosaic appears on the leaves, which narrow, twist and crinkle. Fruit ripens unevenly and browns internally, cutting both yield and quality.Disease · 19 plantsTomato Spotted WiltBrown necrotic spots and ring patterns appear on the leaves and the growing tips shrivel and darken. Fruit develops concentric yellow rings that make it unmarketable.Disease · 4 plantsTomato Yellow Leaf CurlNew leaves stay small, turn yellow and curl upward at the margins. The plant becomes stunted, flowers drop, and almost no fruit sets.Disease · 38 plantsVerticillium WiltOnly one side of the lower leaves yellows and wilts, and the symptom moves up the plant. Stem vascular tissue turns pale brown and the plant dies without ever growing well.Disease · 5 plantsViolet Root RotThe tree gradually loses vigor and the leaves shrink, sometimes wilting abruptly in summer. A purple-brown or white mycelial mat covers the root surface and the bark peels away easily.Disease · 5 plantsWatermelon Mosaic VirusLeaves show a yellow-green mosaic, crinkle and stay small. Vine extension is poor and fruit shows faint color mottling and deformity.Disease · 20 plantsWhite RustCreamy white slightly raised irregular pustules form on the leaf underside and burst through the skin releasing white powder. The upper surface turns pale yellow and heavy infection ruins appearance and market value.Disease · 7 plantsZucchini Yellow MosaicStrong yellow mottled mosaic appears on the leaves, which become narrow and shredded in shape. Fruit is knobbly and lumpy, twisted and bent.

Pests 35

Pest · 27 plantsAphidsSmall green or black insects cluster on shoot tips and leaf undersides, crinkling the leaves and stopping growth. The honeydew they excrete supports sooty mold that blackens the foliage.Pest · 2 plantsAsian Corn BorerEntry holes and powdery frass appear on the tassel and stalk, and the stalk may snap. Larvae bore down from the tip of the ear and the kernels are eaten and rot.Pest · 6 plantsBagwormsBag-shaped cases covered in twigs and leaf fragments hang from the branches. Leaves are eaten irregularly and heavy infestation leaves the branch tips bare.Pest · 10 plantsCabbage ArmywormYoung larvae feed in groups on the leaf underside, eating only the tissue so the leaf turns translucent white. Larger larvae chew big holes and can strip a plant bare in a single night.Pest · 5 plantsCabbage White CaterpillarIrregular holes appear in the leaves and eventually only the veins remain. Dark green pellets of frass are conspicuous at the crown and on leaf undersides.Pest · 8 plantsCitrus LeafminerSilvery winding mines run through newly expanded young leaves, which crinkle and roll inward, with a translucent larva at the head of the mine. It does not attack hardened spring leaves and concentrates on shoots growing from summer into autumn.Pest · 4 plantsCucurbit Leaf BeetleCircular and arc-shaped feeding scars, as if drawn with a compass, line the leaves. On young seedlings the leaves can be eaten away entirely, badly setting back growth.Pest · 4 plantsCutwormsTypically a newly transplanted seedling is severed at soil level and found toppled the next morning. Scratch the soil beside the cut seedling and a gray-brown caterpillar turns up.Pest · 8 plantsDiamondback MothLarvae graze the leaf tissue from below, leaving the upper skin as white window-like patches. As they grow they chew many small holes and also attack the growing point.Pest · 9 plantsFruit BorersSmall entry holes with gummy exudate and frass appear on the fruit surface. On new shoots the tips wilt and die back and the inside is hollowed out.Pest · 7 plantsHelicoverpa BollwormsRound holes are bored into fruit and buds, the inside eaten out and packed with frass. Rot spreads from the entry hole, leading to fruit and bud drop.Pest · 2 plantsLace BugsThe upper leaf surface bleaches into a whitish stipple, while black tar-like droppings and the insects themselves cover the underside. As it advances the whole plant looks whitish and growth declines.Pest · 6 plantsLeafminer FliesWinding white tunnels run through the leaf with the larva at the head of the mine. Heavy mining turns the whole leaf white and dead, cutting photosynthesis.Pest · 11 plantsLeafrollersLeaves are webbed into tubes or folded in half, with a green or brown caterpillar inside. Shoot tips and fruit surfaces are also gnawed, disrupting growth.Pest · 3 plantsLeek MothWhite grazed scars and small holes line the leaf surface, and splitting the leaf reveals larvae inside. Damaged leaves snap easily and die back.Pest · 12 plantsLonghorn BeetlesSawdust-like frass is pushed out at the trunk base or branch crotches. The wood is hollowed out, the tree loses vigor, and the trunk may snap in strong wind.Pest · 7 plantsMealybugsWhite cottony masses appear at leaf axils, on fruit clusters and at the edge of the potting soil. Sap feeding weakens growth and the honeydew leads to sooty mold.Pest · 4 plantsNettle CaterpillarsFrom summer into autumn they cluster on leaf undersides and graze the tissue so the leaves turn translucent white. Larger larvae riddle the leaves with holes and strip the branches bare.Pest · 10 plantsOnion ThripsFine white stippled scars run in vertical lines along the leaf surface, and the whole leaf eventually turns whitish. Growth stops and both yield and quality suffer.Pest · 4 plantsPillbugsCotyledons and the stem base of young seedlings are gnawed and the seedlings disappear. Fruit resting on the ground gets shallow feeding scars on the surface.Pest · 137 plantsRoot-knot NematodeThe plant wilts in the daytime and does not recover with feeding or watering. Pull it up and the roots carry beaded chains of galls of varying size with few fine roots.Pest · 65 plantsRoot-lesion NematodeElongated blackish brown necrotic lesions form on the root surface and fine roots rot away. Above ground the stand is uneven and plants stay small with pale foliage.Pest · 3 plantsSawfliesFeeding advances rapidly from the leaf margin, leaving only the veins within a short time. The larvae rear up when disturbed and are often lined up on the leaf underside.Pest · 21 plantsScale InsectsSmall white or brown shell-like insects dot the shoots and leaves. The plant loses vigor and honeydew-fed sooty mold blackens the shoots and foliage.Pest · 4 plantsScarab GrubsThe plant wilts despite watering and growth halts abruptly. Lift the plant and there are almost no roots; dig into the soil and white C-shaped grubs appear.Pest · 4 plantsSeedcorn MaggotEmergence is uneven, and digging up seed reveals white maggots inside the seed or hypocotyl. In transplants the stem base rots and the plant wilts.Pest · 7 plantsSlugsIrregular holes are chewed in leaves and fruit with glistening slime trails nearby. By day they hide under pots and bricks or in dead leaves at the base of the plant.Pest · 22 plantsSpider MitesFine white stippling spreads across the upper leaf surface, and the leaf eventually whitens and dies back. In heavy infestations fine webbing appears on leaf undersides and shoot tips.Pest · 12 plantsStink BugsSmall feeding punctures on fruit become sunken or turn spongy and discolored. On legumes the pods fail to fill, and fruit drop and deformity increase.Pest · 5 plantsSwallowtail CaterpillarLeaves are eaten away from the base leaving only bare stalks. A single large caterpillar can strip an entire plant bare.Pest · 3 plantsTea Tussock MothOrange-brown larvae line up in colonies on leaf undersides and eat the leaves away. Simply standing under the plant can make the skin itch from the shed hairs.Pest · 4 plantsThripsSilvery white to brown scarring spreads over leaf and fruit surfaces. Flowers discolor and drop, and fruit is left with keloid-like scar tissue.Pest · 4 plantsTobacco CutwormMany larvae gather on the leaf underside and graze the tissue away, leaving white skeletonized patches. Once they disperse they cause heavy damage to leaves, pods and fruit.Pest · 6 plantsTwenty-eight-spotted LadybirdThe leaf surface is shaved thin, leaving a fine net-like pattern of feeding scars. Heavy feeding browns and kills the leaves and scars the fruit surface as well.Pest · 5 plantsWhitefliesShake the plant and a cloud of tiny white insects flies up. Nymphs stay fixed on leaf undersides, and honeydew-fed sooty mold blackens the leaves as the plant weakens.

Disorders 15

Disorder · 5 plantsBlossom End RotThe blossom end of the fruit turns water-soaked, then dark brown, and sinks in. It is most common on fruit in the sizing stage, and secondary rot often follows.Disorder · 7 plantsBoltingA flower stalk rises from the center of the plant and the leaves turn tough and stringy, spoiling eating quality. Heading vegetables run to seed without ever forming a head.Disorder · 3 plantsCurved FruitFruit bends into a bow shape or pinches in partway so that it sizes unevenly. When curved fruit increases, overall plant growth is usually slowing too.Disorder · 11 plantsEtiolationInternodes stretch long, stems are thin and leaf color is pale. The plant topples easily and becomes vulnerable to pests and disease.Disorder · 6 plantsExcess NitrogenLeaves are large and dark green and stems grow thick but soft. Flowering and fruit set decline while aphids and disease become more frequent.Disorder · 4 plantsFertilizer BurnLeaf margins scorch brown soon after fertilizing and the whole plant wilts. Root tips turn brown and growth stops abruptly.Disorder · 7 plantsFruit CrackingRadial or concentric cracks open around the shoulder and calyx of the fruit. Rot organisms enter through the cracks and the fruit spoils quickly.Disorder · 7 plantsIron DeficiencyYellow-white interveinal chlorosis begins on the new leaves with only the veins staying green. In severe cases the new leaves bleach entirely white and growth stops.Disorder · 6 plantsMagnesium DeficiencyYellowing appears between the veins of the lower leaves while the veins stay green, giving a net-like pattern. It later browns and dies back, and is most obvious on plants carrying a heavy fruit load.Disorder · 5 plantsPuffy FruitThe fruit looks normal outside but is hollow inside when cut, feeling light and angular in the hand. Flavor is thin and shelf life is poor.Disorder · 6 plantsRoot BoundLeaves wilt even right after watering and roots push out of the drainage holes. Water runs off the surface instead of soaking in, foliage pales and growth stops.Disorder · 2 plantsStone Fruit Disorder of EggplantFruit is hard, loses its gloss and stops at a small size without sizing up. Cut it open and almost no seed has formed.Disorder · 7 plantsSunscaldThe sun-facing side of the fruit bleaches white to pale yellow, then dries into a sunken leathery patch. Rot organisms enter easily through the damaged tissue.Disorder · 6 plantsVine OvergrowthLeaves grow large and dark green and the vines keep running vigorously, but no flowers or fruit set. In sweet potato the tubers fail to bulk up.Disorder · 13 plantsWaterlogging Root DecayThe plant wilts even though the soil never dries, and the lower leaves yellow. Pull it up and the roots have turned brown to black with a distinctive rotten smell.
