Watering by the soil, not by the calendar
Ardisia wants soil that is evenly moist and never saturated. That sounds vague until you turn it into a test you can actually run: push a finger two inches (5 cm) into the soil or the potting mix. If it comes out damp, do nothing. If it comes out dry to that depth, water thoroughly until it runs from the drainage holes or until the ground is soaked through, then leave it alone until the test says dry again.
In open ground in shade, that usually works out to a deep soak once a week through hot dry weather and nothing at all the rest of the year once the plant is established. In a container it can mean twice a week in high summer and once every ten days to a fortnight in winter. The interval is not the point; the finger test is. Watering on a fixed schedule is the single most common way people kill this plant.
Overwatering and underwatering look different if you know where to look. Too dry and the leaves go dull, curl slightly inward at the edges and the newest growth stays small; recovery after a soak is quick. Too wet and the lowest leaves yellow evenly and drop while the soil stays dark and heavy, the stem base softens, and there is a sour smell at the surface. That second one is root rot beginning, and the response is to stop watering, improve drainage and, in a pot, unpot and cut away any black mushy roots.
Water quality is worth a thought where the tap supply is hard. Ardisia is an acid-soil plant, and years of alkaline water in a container push the mix pH up until the plant goes chlorotic, pale between green veins on the newest leaves. Collected rainwater fixes it. So does an acidifying feed and repotting into fresh mix every second or third year.
Feeding, which needs less than you think
This is an understory shrub adapted to living on leaf litter. It does not want heavy feeding, and pushing it with high-nitrogen fertilizer produces soft leggy growth, fewer berries and more scale insects. One application of a balanced slow-release fertilizer formulated for acid-loving shrubs, applied in spring as growth restarts, covers a plant in the ground for the whole year.
In a container, where every watering flushes nutrients out of the drainage holes, feed a little more often but no more strongly: a half-strength liquid feed for acid-loving plants every four to six weeks through the growing season, stopping completely once growth slows for winter. Feeding a dormant plant in a dim indoor room just builds salts in the mix.
The mulch does more of the work than the fertilizer does. Two inches (5 cm) of pine bark, pine straw or leaf mold topped up each year keeps the soil temperature even, holds moisture, suppresses weed competition and acidifies the surface as it decays. Renew it every spring and keep it pulled back an inch (2.5 cm) from the stem so the base can dry.

Light through the year, indoors and out
Bright indirect light is the target in every season. Outdoors that means dappled shade or a north aspect; indoors it means a few feet back from an east or north window, or behind a sheer curtain at a brighter one. Ardisia will survive genuinely dim conditions but it stretches, the leaves space out along the stem and it stops fruiting, which loses the whole point of the plant.
Winter light indoors is the harder problem, because day length drops at the same time as heating dries the air. A plant that was fine on a shelf in summer may need to move several feet closer to the glass from late autumn onward, then move back when the light strengthens again. Turn the pot a quarter turn every couple of weeks so it does not lean.
Dry indoor air is the other winter enemy. Below about 40 percent relative humidity the leaf edges brown and spider mites move in. Group plants together, stand the pot on a tray of damp gravel with the pot base clear of the water, and keep it away from radiators, wood stoves and forced-air vents. A cool room at 55 to 65F (13 to 18C) suits it far better than a warm dry one.
Cold, and getting it through winter
Coral ardisia holds its leaves down to roughly 20F (-7C). Between about 20F and 15F (-7C and -9C) the foliage burns and the tips die back, but a well-mulched plant with an established root system usually resprouts from the base in spring. Below that, expect to lose the whole top, and in a hard freeze the plant itself. The low rhizomatous marlberry types are noticeably tougher and behave more like a hardy woodland groundcover.
For plants in the ground at the cold edge of their range, the useful preparation is done in autumn: water deeply before the first hard freeze, because a hydrated plant resists cold injury far better than a dry one, then pile four inches (10 cm) of loose mulch over the root zone once the ground has cooled. Do not fertilize late in the season; soft new growth going into winter is the growth that dies.
Container plants come in before the first frost, not after it. Check the undersides of the leaves and the leaf axils for scale and mealybug before the pot crosses the threshold, because an infestation that was held in check by outdoor predators will explode in a warm dry room. Cut back watering once the plant is inside, but do not let the mix dry out completely.
Keep a note of the lowest temperature the plant came through and what the foliage looked like afterward. Two or three winters of that record tell you exactly where your own site sits relative to the published hardiness figure, which is worth more than any zone map.
Managing the berries, every single year
The berries are the reason to grow the plant and the reason it causes trouble. They ripen from green through orange to a hard glossy scarlet and can hang on the plant for the best part of a year, often overlapping with the next season's flowers. Left alone, they drop, germinate in a dense ring under the parent and get carried further by birds.
So strip them. Once the display has done its work and before the fruit softens, cut the whole berry cluster off with snips at the base of its stalk. It takes a few minutes per plant. Collect what falls, bag it and put it in household waste rather than the compost pile, where the seed will survive and turn up in every bed you spread compost on.
Do the same sweep under the plant twice a year for seedlings. They come up as small glossy-leaved rosettes, unmistakable once you have seen a few, and they pull easily when the ground is damp and become genuinely hard work once they have woody roots. Ten minutes twice a year prevents the situation that makes this shrub a problem in the first place.
