The three failures that are not diseases
Before looking for a pest, check the three ordinary causes that account for most disappointing cumin crops. The first is weeds. Cumin seedlings are thread-thin and grow slowly for a month, and almost any weed in the bed will overtake them; a row that vanished without trace was very often hoed off by accident or simply smothered, not eaten or infected.
The second is a summer that was never hot enough or long enough. Cumin needs roughly 100 to 120 days with real heat to fill and ripen seed. If your plants grew, flowered late and were still carrying green umbels as the nights drew in, nothing was wrong with them; the season ran out. That is a climate result, not a fault to fix, and the honest responses are an earlier sowing into warmer ground, a sheltered or covered position, or accepting that cumin is a lottery where you garden.
The third is rain during the ripening weeks. Wet weather once the seed has formed darkens it, dulls the aroma and starts mold in the middle of the umbel where you cannot see it until you thresh. A crop that looked fine standing and then smelled of nothing in the jar was usually rained on. The remedy is to cut early and finish the plants under shelter rather than waiting for perfect ripeness in the open.
If a whole row disappeared within three weeks of sowing and you never clearly saw seedlings, suspect old seed or cold soil rather than pests. Cumin germination falls off sharply in the third year of storage and below 60F (15C) in the soil.
Wilt and blight, the two diseases that matter
Fusarium wilt is the most serious cumin disease and the one that ends a planting. Plants yellow and collapse from the base, often in patches, at any stage from seedling to flowering, and slicing a stem near the soil line shows browning inside. The fungus lives in the soil for years and there is no treatment. Pull and destroy affected plants, do not compost them, and do not grow cumin or its relatives in that ground again for several years.
Alternaria blight shows as small dark brown spots on leaves and stems that enlarge and run together, spreading to the umbels and shriveling the developing seed. It is driven by humidity and by foliage that stays wet, so it is worst in exactly the damp late summers that also spoil the ripening. Wide spacing, watering at the base rather than overhead, and morning rather than evening watering all reduce it substantially.
Powdery mildew appears as a white dusty film on leaves and stems, usually late, in humid weather with cool nights and warm days. On a crop this near to harvest it is often tolerable, but a heavy attack during flowering reduces seed set. Prevention is spacing and airflow, keeping the plants off wet soil with a dry mulch, and never feeding with nitrogen, which produces the soft growth mildew prefers.

Insects, and which ones to leave alone
Cumin attracts few pests worth acting on. Aphids are the most common, colonising shoot tips and umbels particularly during flowering, where a heavy infestation reduces seed set and leaves sticky honeydew that later grows sooty mold. A jet of water in the morning knocks them off, and on a crop this small that is usually sufficient. Do not spray during flowering; the umbels attract the hoverflies and parasitic wasps that will finish the job for you.
Cutworms take the occasional seedling, severing it at soil level overnight so that the plant is found lying beside a bare stub the next morning. Look in the top inch (2.5 cm) of soil immediately next to the gap and you will often find the caterpillar curled up. With a stand this small, losing a few plants matters more than it would elsewhere, so it is worth going out with a torch after dark for a few nights if gaps are appearing.
Spider mites can appear in a very hot dry summer or under cover, showing as fine stippling on the leaves and, when severe, faint webbing at the shoot tips. On an outdoor crop nearing harvest they rarely justify intervention. In a tunnel or greenhouse, raising the humidity slightly by damping the floor in the morning is the simplest check, though it has to be weighed against keeping the ripening heads dry.
Rotation, hygiene and what to note down
Cumin belongs to the carrot family and shares soil-borne diseases with carrot, parsley, coriander, dill, fennel and parsnip. Leave three to four years between any of those crops in the same ground, longer if you have had wilt. This is the single most effective disease measure available to a home grower, and it costs nothing but a note of where things were.
Clear the ground completely after harvest. Blight and wilt both carry over on crop debris, and cumin residue left lying is an obvious source of infection for the following season. Burn or bin diseased material rather than composting it, since a home heap rarely runs hot enough for long enough to kill these fungi reliably.
Record which row had wilt and the year, on a sketch of the bed. Wilt patches recur in the same ground for years and are otherwise impossible to remember accurately by the following spring. Note the date the first blight spots appeared as well; in a garden where they turn up at the same point every summer, it tells you exactly how much ripening time you realistically have and whether you should be cutting early as a matter of routine.
