Where to Put a Dieffenbachia: Light, Warmth and Safety

Bright indirect light keeps the lower leaves on the cane. Cold below 60F (15C) and the reach of a small child or a cat are the two position mistakes that matter.

Put it out of reach before you think about light

Dumb cane earns its name honestly. Every part of the plant is packed with needle-shaped calcium oxalate crystals, and a chewed leaf drives them into the lining of the mouth and throat. The result is immediate burning pain, heavy drooling and swelling of the tongue and lips that can last for days. It is rarely dangerous to an adult, but a toddler or a cat that bites a leaf is in real distress within seconds, and swelling at the back of the throat is the reason this plant is on every vet's warning list.

So decide the position with that first. A plant on the floor beside a sofa is at exactly the height where a crawling child and a bored cat find it. Standing it on a plant stand, a sideboard or a shelf takes it out of that zone without costing it any light. If there is no position in the room that is genuinely out of reach, put it in a room the child and the animal do not use unsupervised, and accept that as the constraint.

If sap gets in an eye it causes severe pain and can scratch the cornea. Rinse for fifteen minutes and get it looked at. Never rub your eye after handling a cut stem.

How much light it actually needs

Dieffenbachia is sold as a low-light plant and it will survive in one, but survival and a good-looking plant are different things. In dim light it keeps making leaves at the top and dropping them at the bottom faster than it replaces them, so the bare cane lengthens every year and the plant leans toward the window. Bright indirect light is what keeps the lower leaves attached and the internodes short.

The variegation decides the exact amount. The heavily cream and white-marked kinds have little chlorophyll in the pale zones, so they need more light than a mostly green plant to run the same amount of growth. What none of them will take is direct midday sun on the leaf: an hour of it through clear glass bleaches the surface to a papery pale patch that never recolours.

Temperature and drafts

This is a warm-country plant with no cold tolerance worth the name. Below 60F (15C) growth stops; below 50F (10C) the tissue itself is damaged, and the damage shows up two or three days later as soft gray-brown patches on the leaves that then collapse. The most common way people cause it is not a cold house but a cold moment: a plant standing on a windowsill behind a curtain on a frosty night, or one carried home from a shop in winter without being wrapped.

Drafts do the same thing more slowly. A position beside a door that opens to outside, or in the path of an air conditioner, gives repeated chilling and drying, and the plant answers with brown leaf edges and steady loss of the lowest leaves. Aim for a steady 65 to 80F (18 to 27C) with no cold blast crossing it.

Do not let a leaf rest against a cold windowpane in winter. The contact point chills below the room temperature and the leaf blackens in a band exactly where it touched.

Humidity and the brown-tip question

Brown, dry, papery tips are the complaint every dieffenbachia owner has, and dry air is only one of its causes. Heated rooms in winter drop to 25 or 30 percent relative humidity, well below the 50 to 60 percent the plant prefers, and the tip is the part of the leaf furthest from the roots so it suffers first. Grouping plants together, standing the pot on a wide tray of damp gravel, or running a humidifier in the room all help measurably.

But before you buy a humidifier, rule out the other three causes, because they are more common: letting the pot dry out hard between waterings, a build-up of fertilizer salts in the compost, and fluoride or high salt levels in tap water, to which this genus is unusually sensitive. Flushing the pot through with plenty of water once a season deals with the salts, and using filtered or stood water deals with the rest.

Moving it through the year

The light in a room changes more between seasons than people expect, and a position that is right in summer is often too dark in winter. The practical routine is two moves a year: in autumn bring the plant one or two feet closer to the window, or to a brighter window, to make up for the weaker, shorter days; in spring move it back before the sun gets high enough to fall directly on the leaves.

Turn the pot a quarter turn every time you water. Dieffenbachia leans toward light strongly, and a plant that is never turned develops a permanent curve in the cane that no amount of correction later will straighten. Resist the urge to stand it outside for the summer unless your nights stay above 60F (15C); the move usually costs it more in scorch and chilling than it gains.

What to write down

Record where the plant stands, how far from which window, and the date of each seasonal move. Note the date any leaf is lost from the bottom of the cane and how much bare stem is showing, measured in inches. Those two figures together tell you within one year whether the position is bright enough: a plant in good light loses a lower leaf every few months and gains new ones faster, while a plant in a dim corner loses one a month and the bare cane grows measurably longer each season.

Also note the lowest temperature the room reaches on a winter night, taken once with a cheap thermometer left on the floor beside the pot. Floor level near a window is often five degrees colder than where you feel the room, and that single measurement explains most mysterious winter leaf collapse.
