Garden Balsam Pests and Diseases: Mildew, Spider Mites and Sudden Collapse

Damp shade suits garden balsam and it suits mildew just as well. Most trouble is either fungal in still air or spider mites in a dry spell, and both are found early by turning leaves over.

Powdery and downy mildew in still, damp shade

The conditions garden balsam wants, damp soil and shade with little air movement, are the conditions mildews want too. Powdery mildew shows first as white dusty patches on the upper leaf surface, usually on the older lower leaves, spreading over a fortnight until the leaves yellow and drop. Downy mildew is the more serious one and looks quite different: the upper surface goes pale and slightly mottled while the underside carries an even, fine white bloom, and leaves fall while still greenish rather than yellowing first.

Turn leaves over once a week during any warm damp spell. That is the whole of early detection, and it is the only chance you get with downy mildew, which moves through a group of plants within days once it is established and cannot be cured on an infected plant. Pull affected plants out whole, bag them and put them in household waste rather than the compost pile, and do not replant balsam in the same ground the following year.

Powdery mildew is survivable and often not worth treating late in the season. Remove the worst leaves, which you may be stripping off anyway to show the flowers, improve the airflow by thinning crowded plants, water at the base rather than over the foliage, and stop feeding, because soft nitrogen fed growth is far more susceptible. A plant that gets it in late summer will usually flower on regardless until the frost.

Wet foliage overnight is the single biggest risk factor for both mildews. Water in the morning at the base of the plant, never over the top in the evening, and space plants far enough apart that the leaves of neighbors do not touch when fully grown.

Spider mites, aphids and thrips

Spider mites are the pest of a hot dry spell, and a balsam that has been allowed to run dry is exactly what they want. The first sign is not webbing but a fine pale speckling across the leaf, as if someone had dusted it with sand, and a general dullness compared to healthy foliage. By the time you can see webbing in the leaf axils the population is large. Hold a sheet of white paper under a leaf and tap it; moving specks confirm it.

The treatment that works best is water and humidity. Spray the undersides of the leaves hard with plain water daily for a week, which knocks the population down and makes the plant an unpleasant place to live, and correct the underlying dryness at the roots. Mites collapse quickly once conditions turn damp. In a greenhouse or a sheltered corner, keeping the humidity up is more effective than anything you can spray.

Aphids cluster on the soft growing tip and around flower buds, and cause distorted new leaves and sticky honeydew that turns black with sooty mold. Squash them or wash them off with a jet of water; on a plant this soft, that is enough. Thrips are harder to see, showing as silvery streaking on the petals and a speckled, distorted look to the newest leaves, and matter mainly because they will spoil the flowers you have just gone to the trouble of exposing.

Collapse, rot and telling them apart from thirst

Garden balsam wilts flat when it is dry and stands up again within a couple of hours of watering. That is normal and not a problem in itself. What matters is a plant that wilts and does not recover after a thorough soak, because that is not thirst. Check the stem at the soil line: if it is soft, brown and slightly sunken, the plant has stem rot and will not come back. Pull it out.

Rot at the base comes from waterlogged ground, mulch piled against the stem, or planting too deep so that soil sits around the soft tissue. Keep the mulch an inch (2 to 3 cm) clear of the stem, plant with the top of the root ball flush with the surface, and make sure containers actually drain rather than standing in a full saucer. The same soft stem that recovers so well from wilting has no defense at all once rot gets in.

A sudden loss of a tall plant in bad weather is usually mechanical rather than biological. The stem is heavy with water and unbranched, and it snaps at the base in wind or hard rain. Because there are no side shoots below the break, that plant is over. Staking before the plant needs it is the only prevention, and it takes a minute.

  1. Weekly underside check Turn over half a dozen leaves on each plant once a week through warm weather. Look for white bloom, fine speckling and aphid clusters. This one habit catches almost everything early enough to act.
  2. Remove rather than treat downy mildew Pull the whole plant, roots included, bag it on the spot and put it in household waste. Do not shake it out over the bed and do not compost it. Clear the fallen leaves underneath as well.
  3. Fix the conditions, not just the symptom Mildew means still damp air and crowding; mites mean dryness at the roots. Thinning plants, watering at the base in the morning, and mulching solve more than any spray applied to a plant left in the same position.

Keeping a record that pays off next year

Write down the date you first saw mildew each season and which plant it started on, together with where that plant stood. Mildew tends to appear in the same corner year after year, the still damp one with the least air movement, and knowing that is what lets you either avoid planting balsam there or space it out generously and accept a shorter season.

Record the position of any plant you removed for downy mildew, because that ground should not carry balsam again for several years. A simple sketch of the bed with the removed plants marked on it is worth more the following spring than a memory of roughly where the trouble was, especially given how freely this plant seeds itself into exactly the places you would rather it did not.
