Sawfly: the one that costs you a bush in a week
Gooseberry sawfly is not a caterpillar, though it looks exactly like one: a pale green grub with black spots and a dark head, up to about three quarters of an inch (2 cm) long. The adult lays eggs in rows along the veins on the underside of leaves low down in the center of the bush, which is the part you cannot see through the thorns and never look at. The grubs hatch there, eat outward and upward, and because they feed in numbers they can strip a mature bush to bare wood in five to seven days.
A stripped bush will usually survive and releaf, but it loses that year's crop quality entirely, the fruit hangs shriveled and sunburnt on naked branches, and the bush goes into winter with no reserves, so next year's crop is poor too. There are two or three generations in a season, so being on top of the first one is not the end of the job.
Detection is the whole battle, and it is simple. Once a week from the moment the leaves are fully open, kneel down, lift the lowest branches near the center of the bush and look at the undersides of those leaves. You are looking for two things: small holes chewed in the leaf blade, and neat rows of tiny white eggs along the main veins. Chewed leaves in the center of the bush with a bush that otherwise looks perfect is the first and only warning you get.

Hand-picking works because the grubs are large, slow and clustered. Ten minutes with a tub of soapy water, done in the first week, saves the crop. Ten minutes done in the third week is tidying up after the loss.
American gooseberry mildew
Mildew shows first as a white powdery felt on the soft shoot tips and the youngest leaves, then spreads onto the fruit, where it dries to a brown felty skin that will not wash off. Badly affected shoot tips curl and die back. It thrives in still humid air and it is worst on bushes that are crowded, unpruned in the center, or pushed hard with nitrogen.
The management is structural rather than reactive. Prune to an open goblet so air moves through. Space bushes at a full 5 feet (1.5 m). Feed potash rather than nitrogen so the growth is firm rather than soft and sappy. Cut out affected shoot tips as soon as you see them, taking about 4 inches (10 cm) of clean wood with them, and carry them away from the bush rather than dropping the clippings underneath. In the winter cut, take the tips of any shoots that showed mildew the previous summer, because the fungus overwinters in the buds there.
Lightly mildewed fruit is safe to eat once the skin is rubbed or peeled, and it cooks perfectly well. It is not a reason to write off a crop, only a reason to change how the bush is grown.
The rest of the list, in order of how much they matter
Birds are, in most gardens, second only to sawfly. They strip dormant buds through late winter, which removes the crop before it exists, and they take coloring fruit. Netting on a frame that holds the mesh clear of the branches deals with both. Netting laid directly on the bush is useless, because birds simply perch on it and reach through, and it snags on the thorns when you try to remove it.
Aphids cluster on shoot tips and cause the leaves to cup and curl tightly, often with distorted red patches on the leaf. On an established bush this is cosmetic; squash the colonies, and leave the ladybird and hoverfly larvae that arrive to finish the job. Capsid bug causes small ragged holes with brown edges scattered through young leaves near the tips, which looks alarming and matters very little.
Gray mold gets into fruit that has split, or into fruit lying in a crowded cluster after rain. Thinning the fruit is the prevention. Coral spot appears as bright orange pinhead pustules on dead wood; it is a sign you have left dead branches on the bush, so cut them out well back into live wood. Leaf spot causes dark spots and early leaf fall in a wet season; rake up and remove fallen leaves so the spores do not overwinter beneath the bush.

The weekly routine and the record that makes it work
From the point the leaves are fully open until they fall, one inspection a week is enough, and it takes under five minutes a bush. Kneel, lift the lowest central branches, look at the leaf undersides for sawfly eggs and chewing, then stand and check the shoot tips for the white felt of mildew and for aphid colonies. That single routine catches every fast-moving problem a gooseberry has.
Write down the date you first find sawfly on each bush, every year. Sawfly timing is remarkably consistent for a given garden, and after two seasons you will know to start looking a week before that date rather than trusting a general guide. Note the date you netted, the date mildew first appeared and on which bush, and how much wood you cut out. Bushes that get mildew first every year are usually the crowded ones, and the record is what makes that pattern obvious enough to act on.
