The shape of the year
This plant grows hardest in the mild parts of the year, not the hottest. Spring and autumn are when roots extend, new leaves appear and cuttings root. High summer heat slows it down, and cold winter weather stops it almost entirely. Everything else in this schedule follows from that.
Because the growth phases are tied to temperature rather than to any date, read the table below by conditions rather than by month. It works the same way in either hemisphere, and it also adjusts itself for a mild coastal garden versus a hot inland one.

Spring: the busiest window
Spring is when you do the work. As soon as nights are reliably above about 40F (5C) and you can see new leaves emerging from the center of the rosette, the plant is in growth and can take root disturbance.
Repot anything that needs it now. Separate offsets at the same time so the plant is disturbed only once. Take leaf cuttings and behead any plant that stretched over the winter, because both root fastest in this window. Start feeding a month after repotting, with a diluted balanced fertilizer once a month.
Move plants outdoors gradually rather than in one step. Two weeks of hardening off, starting in bright shade and building up to full sun, prevents the bleached and blistered leaves that a sudden move causes and that then stay marked all season.
Watch for the year's first mealybugs now. They become active as the plant does, and spring is when a colony that overwintered quietly in the crown starts to expand. A torch check into the center of each rosette at the start of the season takes a minute and saves a lot of work.
Summer: do less, not more
Once days pass about 86F (30C) the plant slows down and largely coasts. Growth stalls, color often fades back to green, and the correct response is to reduce what you do rather than to intervene.
Stop feeding entirely for the hottest part of the season. Do not repot, do not take cuttings, and do not start any new propagation, because none of it roots well in heat and all of it stresses a plant that is already coping.
Water in the evening rather than the morning, so the pot is not sitting hot and wet through the afternoon. Keep the interval roughly the same but check the pot weight more often, because a small pot in a hot, breezy spot can go from soaked to bone dry in under a week.
Provide shade from mid-afternoon sun in hot climates. Full morning sun with shade after about two in the afternoon suits it far better than all-day exposure once temperatures are high. A plant that sulks and drops lower leaves in a heatwave usually just needs shade and an evening watering.
Prolonged summer rain on the compost is more dangerous than the heat. If your summers are wet, move the pots under an eave or into a cover. Hot compost that stays wet is the fastest route to stem rot on this plant.
Autumn: the second growth push and the color
As nights drop back toward 40 to 55F (5 to 13C), growth restarts and the plant enters its best season. This is the second window for repotting and propagation, and cuttings taken now root about as fast as they do in spring.
Autumn is also when the color appears, and it comes from bright light combined with cool nights and a slightly dry root ball. Keep the plant outdoors as long as the temperature allows, and begin stretching the watering interval as the nights cool. A plant kept well watered through autumn stays green.
Stop feeding once the nights are consistently cool. Feeding late produces soft leafy growth that colors poorly and stands up badly to winter. Give the last feed of the year while growth is still strong, then nothing until the following spring.
Plan the move indoors before the first hard frost. Cut the last watering four or five weeks ahead of it, so the plant goes into the cold with a dry root ball, which is the condition that lets it tolerate temperatures it would otherwise be damaged by.
Winter: cool, bright and dry
The single most common winter mistake is keeping the plant too warm. A graptoveria in a heated room with weak winter light stretches badly, and by spring you have a pale plant on a long bare stem that only a beheading will fix. The goal is cool and bright, not warm.
An unheated porch, a cold greenhouse, a bright unheated room or a sheltered outdoor spot with cover overhead are all better than a living room windowsill. Established plants in dry gritty potting mix take nights down to around 25 to 30F (minus 4 to minus 1C) without harm as long as the compost is dry.
Water very little or not at all. Once every five to eight weeks is plenty for a plant kept below 50F (10C), and many growers give nothing from late autumn until spring. Water only if the lower leaves are visibly shriveled and flat, and then water lightly on a mild bright day so the pot can dry before the next cold night.
Do nothing else. No feeding, no repotting, no cuttings, no pruning. Check for mealybugs once a month with a torch and otherwise leave it alone until you see new growth in the center of the rosette, which is your signal that the spring window has opened again.
Keeping a year's record worth reading
The point of a schedule based on conditions rather than dates is that it adapts to your climate, but it can only do that if you know what your climate actually did.
Each year, note four dates: when you moved the plant outdoors, when you brought it under cover, when you gave the first and last feed, and when new growth appeared in spring. Alongside those, record the lowest temperature the plant actually experienced and whether it took damage, the date autumn color first showed, and every watering date through the winter. After two seasons those notes convert this general schedule into your own calendar, and they will tell you immediately whether a plant that stretched last winter was too warm, too dark, or watered too often.
