The first two years are not like the years after
Care for Japanese anemone changes completely once the plant is established, and it helps to think of it as two different plants. For the first year or two after planting it is slow, shallow-rooted and genuinely vulnerable to drought. It needs watering, mulching and protecting from competition, and it will give you very little in return. After that it is a colonising perennial that needs almost no feeding, no watering in an ordinary season, and one deliberate act of restraint a year.
Knowing which phase you are in prevents both common errors. People give up on year-one plants that are behaving exactly as they should, and people ignore year-five colonies that are quietly taking a border apart.

Water is the one thing it genuinely asks for
Everything this plant does badly traces back to dry soil in summer. Brown, crisp leaf margins, leaves curling upward at the edges, a flower display that is thinner than last year's, buds that form and then abort: all of these are drought, and almost none of them are pests or disease.
The timing matters more than the total. Japanese anemone builds its flower stems from midsummer onward and opens them from late summer through autumn. Dry soil during that build-up cuts the number of stems, and by the time you notice the shortfall in autumn it is too late to fix. Dry soil in spring, when the plant is only making leaves, costs you much less.
So the rule is simple: from midsummer until flowering finishes, do not let the soil dry out. Water deeply and infrequently rather than lightly and often. A long slow soak that wets the top eight inches (20 cm) once a week beats a daily sprinkle, which only wets the mulch and encourages roots to stay at the surface. Push a finger into the soil under the mulch before you water; if it is damp two inches (5 cm) down, leave it.
Plants in containers are a different case entirely and will need water every day or two in hot weather. This is the main reason growing it in a pot to control the spread is more work than it looks.
A two-inch (5 cm) mulch of compost or bark applied in spring, when the soil is already moist, does more for this plant than any amount of watering later. Keep it clear of the crown itself so the shoots are not sitting in wet material.
Feeding, and why a rich border makes it travel faster
Established Japanese anemone needs no feeding at all in reasonable garden soil. An annual mulch of compost supplies everything it wants. Adding a general fertilizer to a mature colony produces taller, softer stems that flop harder, more leaf, and no more flowers.
There is a real trade-off here that nobody mentions. Rich, moist, well-fed soil is exactly what makes this plant run hardest. If you are trying to hold a colony at a fixed size, feeding works against you. If you have it in poor dry soil under a tree and want more of it, a spring feed of a balanced granular fertilizer and a generous compost mulch will visibly speed it up.
The exception is a new plant in its first two years, which does benefit from a light spring feed while it is building a root system. After that, stop.
Holding the stems up
The flower stems are wiry, branched and tall, commonly three to four feet (90 to 120 cm) and sometimes more, and they carry their weight right at the top. In an open position, or after heavy rain, they lean and then splay outward from the center, which spoils the display and smothers whatever is growing beside them. Once they have gone over, they do not stand up again.
Support has to go in before it is needed, in late spring or early summer when the clump is still a foot (30 cm) high. Pushing stakes into a flopped clump in autumn achieves nothing except a trussed-looking bundle.
- Grow it against something solid The best support is not a stake. Plant the colony behind or among shrubs, or against a fence or wall, and the stems lean into the shrubs and hold themselves. This is the least work and looks the most natural, and it is worth planning for at planting time.
- Or set a ring or grid early In late spring, when growth is roughly 12 inches (30 cm) tall, put a link stake ring or a grid support over the clump so the stems grow up through it. Set the ring so it will end up around a third of the way up the eventual stem height. Foliage hides it within a few weeks.
- Or use brushwood Push twiggy prunings 18 to 24 inches (45 to 60 cm) tall into the clump in late spring and let the stems weave through them. Cheap, invisible by midsummer, and it flexes with the stems instead of snapping them at a hard point, which single canes tend to do.
- Do not tie the whole clump to one cane Gathering all the stems to a central stake makes a tight column that catches wind, and one broken tie loses the lot. Support should hold the stems apart, not together.
The annual half-hour that keeps it where you put it
From the third year onward the colony expands by pushing horizontal shoots through the top six to eight inches (15 to 20 cm) of soil and sending up new crowns wherever they surface. In spring you can see exactly where they have got to, because the new leaves come up in clear rosettes well away from the parent clump.
Deal with them then, in early to mid spring, when the shoots are small and the soil is soft. Push a spade in vertically along the line you want to hold, all the way around the colony, then lift out everything on the wrong side of that line. Follow each stray crown back and pull the horizontal root out with it rather than snapping it off, because a snapped root is simply a root cutting left in place, and it will regrow.
Done every spring, this is a genuinely small job and holds the colony indefinitely. Skipped for two or three years, the shoots run into the crowns of neighboring plants, where they cannot be extracted without lifting the neighbor, and the job stops being small.
Pulling shoots up in summer without removing the root beneath them does not work. It removes the top growth and leaves the plant to send up two more.
What to write down
Three notes a year make this plant much easier to manage. First, the date the first flower opened. Over a few seasons this tells you precisely which weeks of autumn your plant covers, and whether a hot dry summer shifted it.
Second, the outline of the colony each spring after you have cut the edge. A rough sketch with two measurements to a fixed point, a post, a wall, the corner of a path, is enough. Comparing this year's sketch with last year's is the only reliable way to know whether your containment is actually working, because a colony expanding six inches (15 cm) a year is invisible from one season to the next and obvious over three.
Third, note the years you did not get round to cutting the edge. When you eventually find anemone shoots coming up through the middle of a neighboring plant, you will want to know how long they have had.
