The two hazards that are not pests
Before the insects, deal with the two things that make lantana different from an ordinary flowering shrub. The first is invasiveness: across warm-temperate, subtropical and tropical regions lantana has escaped cultivation and smothered pasture, bush and riverbanks, and in many countries and states it is a declared or noxious weed with legal obligations attached. Birds spread the seed for miles. Where that applies, keep the plant in a container standing on hard ground, deadhead so fruit never ripens, and remove seedlings from your beds as soon as you see them.
The second is toxicity. The unripe green berries are poisonous to people and to livestock, and cattle, sheep and goats that browse the foliage suffer serious liver and skin damage. Dogs that chew the fruit get sick. The sap and rough leaves irritate skin on contact for some people, so wear gloves and long sleeves when you cut the plant back, and wash afterwards. None of this makes lantana unsuitable for a garden, but it does make consistent deadheading a safety habit rather than a cosmetic one.
Seedlings are the early-warning system. Paired, roughly toothed leaves with the parent's strong smell when rubbed, on a slightly square stem. Pull them at that stage and it costs nothing. A year later you need a fork and the taproot will regrow from anything you leave behind.
Keep a note of every seedling you find and where it came up. A cluster under a fence line or a perch tells you birds are moving fruit, which means your deadheading is not keeping up.
Whitefly, especially under glass
Whitefly is the pest you will meet most often, and it is far worse on plants kept in a greenhouse, conservatory or on a windowsill over winter than on plants outdoors. Tap a stem and a small cloud of white insects flies up and settles again; turn a leaf over and you find the flat, scale-like immature stages stuck to the underside, along with sticky honeydew and the black sooty mold that grows on it.
The reason indoor plants suffer is that the pest breeds continuously in warmth with no natural enemies and no rain, and the plant is producing exactly the soft, well-watered growth that whitefly prefer. Reducing feeding and watering over winter helps more than any spray, because the population tracks the softness of the growth. Yellow sticky traps hung at the top of the plant catch the adults and, more usefully, tell you which plant is the source before the infestation spreads to everything else on the bench.
For control, start by stripping off the worst-affected lower leaves and taking them out of the building. Spray the undersides of the remaining leaves with insecticidal soap or a light horticultural oil, repeating every five to seven days for at least three rounds, because the eggs and scale stages are not killed by contact sprays and the timing has to catch each new generation as it hatches. In a heated greenhouse, the parasitic wasp Encarsia formosa is effective if introduced early, while the population is still small and before any oil or soap has been used.

Lace bug, the one people misread as drought
Lantana lace bug is the pest that most often gets mistaken for something else. The leaves lose color from above in a fine stippled pattern, then go gray or bronze and drop, and gardeners water more in the belief that the plant is stressed by heat. Turn a damaged leaf over and the evidence is unmistakable: small dark specks of varnish-like excrement, and the flat, lacy-winged adults sitting still on the underside.
Damage builds through the hottest part of the season and can strip a plant almost bare. Because the insects sit under the leaves, anything you spray over the top does nothing at all. Direct a hard jet of water upward through the plant to knock the population back, then follow with insecticidal soap aimed deliberately at the undersides, repeating twice at weekly intervals.
On a badly infested plant, the fastest route back is surgical. Cut the whole plant back hard, remove the cut material from the garden rather than composting it in place, and let the fresh growth come away clean. In a warm climate the plant will be flowering again within a few weeks, and the new leaves are far easier to keep clean than the ruined old ones.
Problems that are not pests at all
A large green plant with almost no flower heads is being fed too well, shaded too much, or both. Lantana flowers hardest in poor dry soil and full sun. Stop feeding, count the actual hours of unshaded sun the plant gets, and move it in spring if the answer is under six.
Yellowing lower leaves with soft stems and a sour smell from the compost is overwatering, and in a container it is usually fatal by the time it is obvious. Empty the saucer, let the mix dry right out and check that the drainage holes are not blocked by roots or a mat of debris.
Sudden collapse after a cold snap is straightforward frost damage. Lantana is tender and stems are killed at around 28F (minus 2C), though established plants in mild areas often shoot again from the base once warmth returns. Do not cut a frosted plant back immediately; wait until spring growth shows you what is alive.
Keep a simple record of what appeared and when
Write down the date you first saw each pest, which plant it was on and what you did about it. Whitefly and lace bug are both strongly seasonal and strongly positional, and after two years of notes you will know that the plant in the sheltered corner always starts first, or that whitefly appears on the greenhouse plants within a fortnight of bringing them inside.
That lets you switch from reacting to intercepting. Hanging sticky traps or hosing the undersides in the week before your recorded first-sighting date takes a fraction of the effort that clearing an established infestation does, and the plant never loses a flush of flowers to it.
Record the seedling counts too, and where they came up. If the number climbs year on year despite deadheading, that is the signal to move the plant into a container, or to remove it altogether if you live somewhere it is naturalising.
