The plant you are actually growing
Marguerite daisy is sold beside the bedding annuals, but it is a tender evergreen sub-shrub from a mild island climate. That single fact explains almost everything it does. It is not adapted to summer heat, so it stops flowering when the weather gets genuinely hot and starts again when the nights cool. It builds woody stems rather than dying back, so it gets taller, barer and less floriferous every year instead of coming back fresh. And it is only marginally hardy, taking a light frost but not a hard one, so in most gardens it is either grown as a one-season plant or overwintered under cover.
In its first season it is one of the hardest-working plants you can put in a pot. From late spring it produces daisies continuously on a tight mound of finely cut gray-green or bright green foliage, and it will keep going for months with nothing more than water, a fortnightly feed and regular deadheading. The trouble only starts in midsummer and in year two, and both problems have the same solution, which is a knife.
Understanding that it is a shrub also tells you how to prune it. It will break freely from stems that still carry leaves, and it is very reluctant to break from bare old wood. Every pruning decision on this plant follows from that.
Light, soil and water
Give it as much direct sun as you can up to the point where the site bakes. Six hours of sun produces a dense plant covered in flowers; anything less than four and you get a loose, leaning plant with long internodes and half the buds. In a genuinely hot summer climate the ideal is morning sun with shade from the middle of the afternoon, which keeps the flowering going for weeks longer than full exposure.
Drainage matters more than soil fertility. This plant will grow in poor ground and flower well there, but it will not tolerate a crown that sits wet, and heavy soil that stays saturated after rain will rot the stem bases in warm weather. In beds, work grit or coarse compost into heavy ground before planting and raise the planting position slightly. In containers, use a free-draining potting mix and never leave a saucer standing full.
Water thoroughly and then let the surface dry before watering again. A marguerite in a full pot in warm weather may need water daily, and it wilts dramatically and quickly when it runs out. It usually recovers within an hour of watering, but repeated hard wilting costs you buds every time, so it is worth checking pots by weight rather than by looking at the plant.

Pinching, deadheading and the midsummer shear
Pinch the growing tips out of a young plant once, when it is about six inches (15 cm) tall and before it starts flowering. Each pinched stem breaks into two or three, and the plant that results is denser and carries far more flowers than one left to run up. It costs a week or so of earliness and is always worth it.
Deadhead through the season. Snap or snip each spent flower off at the base of its stalk, down where it joins a leafy stem, rather than leaving a forest of bare stubs across the top of the plant. Marguerite sets seed readily, and a plant carrying seed heads slows down noticeably. Ten minutes a week keeps it going.
The big intervention is the shear in midsummer, once the first flush is obviously spent. Take the whole plant down by about a third with shears, keeping green leaves on every stem you cut, feed it, and keep it watered. New shoots appear within a week or ten days and flowers follow about five to seven weeks after the cut, giving a second season through the cooler end of summer and into autumn. Most people never do this, which is why most marguerites look terrible by late summer.
Heat, and the second year
When the weather turns genuinely hot, a marguerite stops. The foliage stays healthy, the plant keeps growing, and the buds simply do not open. This is normal behavior for a plant from a cool maritime climate and there is no feed or watering regime that overrides it. Keep it watered, give it shade from the worst of the afternoon, and it will pick up again when the nights drop back into the fifties Fahrenheit (around 10 to 14C).
The second year is a different problem. Over a winter the stem bases harden into genuine wood, and the plant emerges in spring with a bare, brittle, gray framework carrying leaves only at the tips. It will flower, but on longer stems, more sparsely, and the middle of the plant stays empty. You cannot cut it back into that bare wood to fix it, because it will not reliably resprout from there. A light tidy into the leafy growth in early spring is the most you can safely do.
This is why cuttings are the real answer to keeping a marguerite you like. Young plants raised from late-summer cuttings flower earlier, harder and in far better shape than a second-year parent, and they cost nothing but a pot of gritty potting mix.
Marguerite takes a light frost down to about 28 to 30F (minus 1 to minus 2C) and is killed outright below that. In a mild garden it survives outdoors as a short-lived shrub; anywhere colder it must come under cover or be replaced from cuttings each year. A pot brought into a warm room instead of a cool bright one will produce pale drawn growth and collect whitefly.
What to write down
Record where each plant stood and how much sun that position actually got, because the difference between a spot with afternoon shade and one in full exposure shows up as weeks of extra flowering. Note the date of the first flower, the date the first flush tailed off, and the date you sheared, so next year you can judge whether there is time for a second flush before the season closes.
Also worth noting: how often the pot needed water at the height of summer, whether the plant wilted badly at any point, and the date you first saw leaf miner tunnels or aphids. Those first-sighting dates are the most useful thing in the whole record, because they tell you when to start looking rather than when to start reacting.
