Root rot in cold wet soil is the main killer
The great majority of dead marjoram plants died at the root in soil that was both cold and saturated. Marjoram comes from dry stony hillsides and its roots are adapted to air as much as to water. When the soil stays wet and the plant is too cold to draw on it, the fine roots suffocate and rot organisms move in, and the base of the stem goes brown and soft.
The trap is that the symptoms look exactly like drought. The plant wilts, the leaves go dull and droop, and the natural response is to water it, which finishes it off within days. Before you ever water a wilting marjoram, push a finger two inches (5 cm) into the soil. If it is damp there, the problem is too much water, not too little.
- Check the soil before doing anything Two inches (5 cm) down. Damp and cool means rot; genuinely dry and dusty means drought. This one check prevents most losses.
- Squeeze the base of the stem A healthy stem base is firm and pale. If it is soft, brown or slightly slimy, root rot has already started and the plant will probably not recover.
- Get the plant out of the wet In a container, tip it out, remove the saturated mix, cut off any black roots and repot into a gritty free-draining mix in a pot barely bigger than the root ball. In the ground, scrape the soil back from the crown and stop watering entirely.
- Take cuttings as insurance If any healthy top growth remains, take four or five tip cuttings straight away. They root readily and you keep the plant even if the original dies.
- Do not feed a struggling plant Fertilizer on damaged roots makes matters worse. Get it dry and warm first, and only feed once new growth appears.
Saucers under pots are the most common cause. A pot standing in half an inch of water for a week in cool weather is enough to rot marjoram roots. Empty the saucer after every watering, or take it away entirely.
Damping off takes seedlings overnight
Marjoram seedlings are extremely small and thin-stemmed for the first month, which makes them a classic damping-off casualty. The seedling topples at soil level with the stem pinched to a thread, and once it starts it moves across a tray in a day or two.
It is a management problem, not something to spray for. The fungi that cause it are present everywhere and only become destructive in a sowing that is too wet, too crowded, too cold and too still.
- Sow thinly Crowded seedlings hold humidity against each other's stems. Space the seed so that no seedling touches its neighbor, however wasteful that feels.
- Water from below and stop early Stand trays in shallow water until the surface darkens, then take them out. Never leave a tray standing, and let the surface dry between waterings.
- Take the cover off at germination Any propagator lid or plastic film comes off the moment the first seedlings appear. Keeping the humidity up past that point is what causes the collapse.
- Keep the air moving A small fan on low nearby, or an open window on mild days, dries the surface and stops the fungus spreading between seedlings.
- Remove casualties immediately Pull out any collapsed seedling and the compost around it as soon as you see it, rather than leaving it to infect the row.
Reading yellow, bronze and black leaves
Marjoram discolors for several different reasons and the color tells you which. Getting this right matters, because the responses are opposites: the plant that needs to be left dry looks much like the plant that needs feeding, and treating one as the other is what loses plants.

Bronze spring color is the single most reported marjoram problem and it is not a problem at all. It is a cold response, it costs the plant nothing, and it vanishes without intervention.
Spider mite on overwintered plants indoors
The pest that actually damages marjoram is spider mite, and it does it in winter rather than in the garden. A plant lifted into a warm dry room with poor light is exactly the condition mite thrives in, and by late winter the leaves are dull and stippled with fine webbing in the shoot tips. Caught early it is easy to deal with, but left for a month on a weakened winter plant it usually finishes the plant off, which is why so many overwintering attempts fail in the last few weeks before spring.
- Look at the leaf undersides weekly Turn a few leaves over every time you water. Fine pale speckling on the upper surface and dust-like specks underneath is the first sign, well before any webbing.
- Rinse the whole plant Take it to a sink and spray the undersides thoroughly with lukewarm water. Physical removal alone knocks the population back sharply.
- Raise the humidity around it Stand the pot on a tray of damp gravel, keeping the pot base clear of the water, and move it away from a radiator or heating vent.
- Spray with insecticidal soap if it persists Cover the leaf undersides and repeat every five days for three applications, because eggs hatch after the first spray.
- Cut it hard back as a last resort Reducing the plant to a few inches removes most of the mite population with the foliage. A healthy root system will regrow clean shoots as light returns.
Aphids, slugs and things that mostly do not matter
Aphids occasionally cluster on soft spring tips, particularly on plants fed too generously. They wash away with a jet of water and rarely persist on a plant grown lean in full sun. Slugs graze seedlings and freshly planted young plants but leave established plants alone once the growth firms up.
The aromatic oil that makes marjoram worth growing deters most leaf-eating insects, so a healthy plant in the right spot needs essentially no pest management. If something is repeatedly attacking your marjoram, look first at whether it is soft from overfeeding or weakened at the root.
Never spray a plant you are about to harvest, even with soap. Cut what you need first, treat afterwards, and leave a week before picking again.
Note what went wrong and where
Record the position of any plant that rotted, along with the weather that fortnight. Marjoram losses cluster in particular spots in a garden, and after one season of notes you will usually find that the bed with the problem is the one that stays wet after rain, not the one that gets least sun.
Also record the date you first saw spider mite on an overwintering plant. It is remarkably consistent from year to year, tied to when the heating goes on, and knowing that date lets you start checking a fortnight beforehand rather than discovering it when the plant is already covered.
