Root rot is the main killer
More philodendrons are lost to overwatering than to every insect and disease together. It is invisible until it is well advanced, because the roots fail out of sight and the top of the plant looks reasonable for weeks. By the time leaves are yellowing in numbers the damage below is substantial.
The early signs are worth learning: several lower leaves going yellow within a short period, a general dullness across the whole plant, compost that stays wet far longer than it used to, and a sour smell from the surface. If you suspect it, tip the plant out and look. Healthy roots are firm and pale. Rotted roots are brown or black, hollow and come apart when you pull them.
- Cut every affected root away Trim back to firm pale tissue with clean pruners. Leaving a partially rotted root in the pot lets the rot continue, so be more decisive than feels comfortable.
- Repot into a smaller pot A plant that has lost half its roots cannot fill its old pot, and the surplus wet compost restarts the problem. Move it down a size into fresh open mix.
- Reduce the top to match Cut off enough leaves that the remaining root system can supply what is left, roughly in proportion to what you removed below.
- Water sparingly while it recovers Keep it warm, out of strong sun, and just barely damp until new growth appears. Do not feed for a month.
If the base of the stem itself has gone soft and black, the plant will not recover. Cut healthy stem sections from above the damage, root them as cuttings, and discard the rest along with the compost.
The four pests worth inspecting for
Check the undersides of the leaves and the point where each leaf stalk meets the stem every time you water. Every one of these is trivially easy to deal with when you find twenty of them and genuinely difficult once there are thousands.

Isolate any plant you find pests on immediately, and inspect its neighbors the same day. Spider mites and thrips move between touching plants within days, and by the time the second plant shows symptoms the third is already infested.
Treating an infestation properly
The commonest reason a treatment appears to fail is stopping too soon. Sprays kill the adults and rarely all of the eggs, so the population rebuilds from eggs that hatch a week later and you conclude the product does not work.
- Wash first, spray second Take the plant to the shower and rinse both leaf surfaces thoroughly. Physically removing most of the population makes whatever you spray afterwards far more effective.
- Treat at least three times Repeat every five to seven days for three or four rounds regardless of whether you can still see anything. That covers the full egg to adult cycle.
- Cover the undersides Almost all of these pests live on the underside of the leaf. Spray upwards until it runs. Wetting only the top surface accomplishes very little.
- Never spray in direct sun Any oil or soap based treatment on a leaf in direct sun scorches it. Treat in the evening or move the plant into shade first.
- Wipe the pole and the pot too Mealybugs and scale shelter in the surface of a moss pole and under the pot rim. Treating the leaves alone leaves a reservoir that reinfests the plant.
Leaf problems that are not pests
Plenty of philodendron symptoms get blamed on insects when the cause is cultural. Check this table before you spray anything, because treating a watering problem with insecticide only adds stress.

Prevention costs almost nothing
Nearly all of the above is avoidable with three habits that take a minute each. Look at the leaf undersides whenever you water, keep new plants separate for two or three weeks before they join the others, and let the top of the compost dry before you water again.
The third habit alone prevents root rot, fungus gnats and most fungal leaf problems at once, because all three depend on compost that is permanently wet. Dust the leaves once a month while you are at it: a clean leaf photosynthesises properly and mites establish far less readily on a leaf that is regularly wiped.
Keep a short record of what you found and when, on which plant, and what you did about it. Pest outbreaks are seasonal and repeat, so knowing that mites arrived in the same dry weeks last year tells you when to start looking this year.
When to give up on a plant
A heavily infested plant next to a healthy collection is a liability, and a stem that has rotted through will not regrow. The judgement is straightforward: if there is any firm healthy stem with a node on it, take cuttings from it and root them, and discard the rest with its compost rather than trying to nurse the original back.
Do not compost badly infested material or reuse the pot without scrubbing it. Thrips pupate in compost and mealybug eggs survive happily in the crevices of a used plastic pot, which is how a problem you thought you had solved reappears two months later on a different plant.
Philodendron sap contains calcium oxalate and irritates skin and mouths. Wear gloves when cutting away rotted or infested material, and keep the debris away from children and pets.
