Climbing is what triggers the big leaves
In the forest a philodendron germinates on the floor, finds a tree and climbs it. Its leaf size increases stage by stage as it goes up, so the small leaves at the base of a wild plant and the huge ones fifteen feet up belong to the same individual. That progression is not driven by age or by feeding, it is driven by climbing: the plant only builds the next size of leaf once its aerial roots have attached to something and it has gained height.
This is why a trailing philodendron left to hang produces the same modest leaf indefinitely, however perfectly you water it, and why the same plant tied onto a damp pole starts enlarging within two or three leaves. If you want the mature form, the support is not decoration, it is the mechanism.
Only the climbing philodendrons respond this way. The upright self-heading types have no aerial roots that grip and do not climb at all. Giving one a pole achieves nothing except getting in the way.
The support has to be grippable and damp
An aerial root will only attach to a surface that is both rough and moist. Against a dry bamboo cane or a plastic-coated stake the root grows out an inch, finds nothing to hold, dries and withers. The plant is then merely tied to a stick, which supports it physically but leaves the leaf size exactly where it was.

Putting a plant onto a pole
Do this in late spring or early summer, when the plant will attach quickly. It is far easier on a young flexible plant than an old one, because philodendron stems stiffen with age and snap rather than bend.
- Set the pole in at repotting time Push the pole down to the bottom of the pot before you add the plant, so it is anchored in the base rather than sitting in the top two inches. Driving a pole into an established rootball tears through roots.
- Soak the pole before you start A dry moss or coir pole repels water for a surprisingly long time. Submerge it until it is heavy, then set it, and it will take up water readily from then on.
- Face the aerial roots inwards Turn the stem so its existing aerial roots point at the pole, then tie loosely at each node with soft ties or plant velcro. Tuck the root tips against the surface, do not tie them tightly.
- Keep the pole wet for the first month Water the pole from the top every time you water the plant, or mist it daily. Roots attach within three to six weeks on a damp pole and never attach at all on a dry one.
- Add ties as it grows Guide each new section as it extends rather than trying to bend a hardened stem back later. Loosen or replace old ties before they cut into a thickening stem.
Once the roots have gripped, the ties become mostly redundant. Leave them on anyway on a heavy plant, since a single knock can peel a whole section away from a pole it has taken months to attach to.
Extending the pole upward
A plant that reaches the top of its pole will start to arch over, and everything that grows beyond the support goes straight back to small leaves. Extending in time keeps the progression going.
The easiest approach is a stacking pole with additional sections, added before the plant reaches the top rather than after. If you are extending a homemade pole, lash the new section alongside the old one over a good overlap so the join cannot pivot, then wrap the join so the roots can cross it.
There is a practical ceiling in any room. When the plant reaches it, the choice is to cut the top back into a node and root it as a new plant, or to train the extension sideways along a wall on a bark slab or wire.
Aerial roots you do not want on the pole
A climbing philodendron produces aerial roots from most nodes, and not all of them will be heading somewhere useful. They are not a fault or a sign of any problem, and stripping them all off costs the plant both grip and water uptake.
Guide any root pointing at the pole onto the pole. Guide any long root heading into the room down into the compost instead, where it thickens and works as an ordinary feeding root. Cut only those that are shriveled, damaged or genuinely obstructive, taking them close to the stem with clean pruners and never tearing them off.
Choosing not to use a support
Letting a philodendron trail from a shelf or a hanging pot is a perfectly legitimate choice, and for the heartleaf types it is the classic look. The consequence is simply that the leaves stay at their juvenile size permanently. Decide which you want before you buy a six foot pole.
You can also have both. Train one or two stems up a pole for the large mature leaves and let the rest trail, and note in a record when each stem went onto the pole and how many leaves it took before the size visibly changed. That comparison in your own conditions is worth more than any general figure.
