The toxicity reputation is overstated
The poinsettia's reputation as a dangerous plant traces to a single unverified report from over a century ago, and it has been repeated ever since. The reality is far milder. The plant is in the spurge family and its milky latex is an irritant, so it can cause a rash on sensitive skin, sore eyes if you rub them after handling it, and mild nausea or vomiting if a quantity of leaf is actually swallowed. That is the extent of it.
Poison control data over decades shows essentially no serious outcomes, and the great majority of reported ingestions by children required no treatment at all. A child who chews a leaf is unlikely to eat much, because the latex tastes unpleasant. Cats and dogs likewise get drooling and an upset stomach rather than anything worse, though a cat that chews the plant will make a mess and is worth discouraging.
None of this means you should be careless. Wear gloves when you prune, keep the sap out of your eyes, wash your hands afterwards, and stand the plant where a toddler or a determined cat cannot strip it. But you do not need to refuse the plant in a house with children or pets, which is the conclusion the myth pushes people towards.

Leaf drop: work through the causes in order
Leaf drop is by far the commonest complaint, and it is almost never a disease. Five causes account for practically all of it, and they are listed here in rough order of how often they turn out to be the answer. Note that the trigger often happened one to two weeks before the leaves started falling, so think back rather than only at what changed yesterday.

Pests, and where to look for them
The pests of a poinsettia are the ordinary warm dry indoor pests, and all of them start on the undersides of the leaves and in the growing tips. Turn a few leaves over once a week and you will catch every one of these early, when they are trivial to deal with.

Whitefly is the one to watch for. It breeds fast in a warm room, and by the time you notice it without looking there are already several generations on the plant.
Diseases and rots
Disease on a poinsettia almost always follows a watering or airflow mistake rather than arriving on its own, so the treatment is usually to change the conditions rather than to reach for a spray.
- Root rot Wilting with wet compost, and a sour smell from the pot. Slide the plant out and look: healthy roots are pale and firm, rotted ones are brown, soft and pull away. Cut off the dead roots, repot into fresh compost one size smaller, and water sparingly until it recovers.
- Gray mold on fallen leaves Fuzzy gray growth on dropped leaves or damaged bracts, in a cool still room. Remove every fallen leaf from the pot surface, improve airflow, and stop misting. It spreads from dead tissue onto live tissue if you leave the debris.
- Stem rot at the base The stem goes soft and dark just above the compost, usually after being kept both cold and wet. It is rarely recoverable. Take cuttings from any firm upper growth immediately, because that is all you will save.
- Brown crisp leaf edges Not a disease. Dry air from central heating, or salt build-up from feeding a plant that did not need it. Move it away from the heat source and flush the pot through with plenty of plain water.
Keeping a fault log
Because most poinsettia problems show up one to two weeks after their cause, memory is a poor diagnostic tool. A few lines are enough: the date the plant came home and how cold the journey was, the date you removed the sleeve, each watering date, and the date you first noticed leaves on the floor.
Reading back from the first symptom to what happened ten days earlier will usually identify the cause outright, and it stops you from making the same change twice. It also tells you whether a plant that survives to spring is worth keeping for another year.
