Crown rot, the one that actually kills
The way this plant dies is recognizable and quick. A section of the mound goes dull and limp, the foliage nearby yellows or turns brown, and when you take hold of it the whole piece lifts away with no roots attached and a soft, dark, sometimes slimy patch where the stems met the crown. There is often nothing wrong with the leaves themselves; the damage is entirely at the base.
This is rot at the collar, and it is caused by water sitting against the crown, not by a pathogen arriving from outside. Heavy soil, a crown planted level with or below the surface, a bark or compost mulch piled against the stems, an overhead sprinkler running in the evening, a pot standing in a saucer, or fallen leaves lying on the mound through the wet months will each produce it on their own.
It is not treatable once it has taken the crown. What you can do is act immediately: cut away every soft and discolored part back to clean firm tissue, take cuttings from any healthy shoots that remain, clear the mulch away from the base, and stop watering entirely. Sometimes a plant with one rotted section survives on the rest. Often it does not, and the cuttings are the real rescue.
The prevention is all done at planting. Crown set a half inch (1 cm) proud of the soil, at least a third grit in the backfill, an inch (2.5 cm) of grit rather than organic mulch up to the stems, twelve to eighteen inches (30-45 cm) between plants so air moves through, and a site where a test hole drains within an hour. A plant sited that way rarely gets rot at all, in any climate.

Summer sulking is behavior, not illness
In a hot, humid summer a Rhodanthemum frequently stops. Flowering ceases, growth halts, the silver looks tired and the whole plant sits there doing nothing for weeks. Gardeners read this as a plant in trouble and respond by watering more and feeding it, which is the worst possible answer and kills more plants than the heat ever would.
The behavior makes sense once you remember where it comes from. On a North African mountainside the growing and flowering happens in the cool, moist part of the year, and the hot dry part is something to be sat out. The plant is doing in your garden exactly what it does at home. Warm nights and high humidity are harder on it than heat alone, which is why it struggles in a muggy summer climate and coasts through a hot dry one.
The correct response is to do less. Keep watering to the minimum that stops the plant shriveling, water at the base and in the morning only, do not feed at all, and make sure air is moving around the mound. If it is in a pot, moving it somewhere with afternoon shade and a breeze for the worst weeks helps; a plant in the ground should be left where it is.
It picks up again as nights cool, and this is where the shear taken after the first flush pays off, because a plant that was cut back has a stock of young growth ready to flower when the weather turns. If your summers are consistently hot and humid, expect a shorter-lived plant and treat the annual cuttings as routine rather than optional.
Do not diagnose a Rhodanthemum in midsummer. Judge it as the weather cools: a plant that comes back into growth and flower once nights drop was never ill, and a plant that does not was almost certainly lost at the collar earlier on.
Green, floppy and shy of flowering
The second most common complaint is a plant that grows perfectly well and looks wrong. The foliage loses its silver cast and turns plain green, the stems get long and soft, the tight dome opens out and splays apart in the middle, and the flower count falls away. Nothing is attacking it; it is being looked after too well.
Rich soil, manure or compost dug into the planting hole, a general fertilizer with plenty of nitrogen, or simply regular watering of an established plant in the ground all produce this. The silver hairs and compact habit are drought and light adaptations, and a plant that is comfortable stops bothering with them. Recovery is straightforward: stop feeding, cut the watering right back, shear the plant by a third into green growth, and refresh the grit. In the growing season it usually comes back tight and silver within a couple of months.
Too little sun produces something similar but does not respond to that treatment. A plant in partial shade grows loose and leaning, flowers sparsely, holds moisture on its foliage far longer and rots more readily. Six hours of direct sun is the minimum and a full day is better. There is no cultural fix; the plant has to be moved, and spring is the time to do it.
Old age looks different again and is worth separating from both. A plant in its fourth or fifth year gets woody at the base, thins in the middle and flowers less however well it is grown. Shearing keeps it presentable longer but does not reverse it. When you see the bare woody center spreading, that is the signal to root cuttings and plan a replacement rather than to change how you are treating it.
Pests, mildew and what to write down
Pests are genuinely minor on this plant. Aphids occasionally cluster on soft new shoots and flower buds, particularly on a plant that has been overfed; a jet of water knocks them off and reducing the feed stops them coming back. Spider mite shows up in hot dry spells as fine pale stippling and faint webbing on the leaf undersides, and rinsing the undersides thoroughly along with better air movement usually settles it. Slugs and snails will graze soft new growth in damp weather, mostly on young plants, and a grit mulch discourages them at the same time as it keeps the collar dry.
Powdery mildew turns up as a grayish dusty film on the foliage when plants are crowded, the air is still and the humidity is high. On a silver-leaved plant it is easy to miss at first, so rub a patch with a finger: mildew smears off, the natural silver does not. Strip affected growth, widen the spacing, stop any overhead watering and get air moving. Sprays are rarely worth it here because the conditions that caused it are the real problem, and those same conditions are already threatening the crown.
Do not be too quick to blame an insect. If a Rhodanthemum is failing, check the base of the plant before anything else. Take hold of a limp section and pull gently; if it lifts away with a soft dark patch, the answer is water at the collar and no pest control will change it.
Keep a running note through the year and it turns this plant from a gamble into something predictable. Write down when anything went wrong and what the weather had been doing for the week or two beforehand, where in the garden the affected plant sits and how that spot drains, whether the crown was set proud of the surface, what mulch was against the stems, and whether you had fed or watered it recently. After two seasons the notes almost always point at one corner of the garden or one habit rather than at the plants, and knowing which winter finally took a plant tells you when to have replacement cuttings ready.
Note the date of each loss alongside the rainfall and temperature around it. Because this species dies from wet far more often than from cold, the useful record is not your minimum winter temperature but how long the ground stayed saturated.
