Leave the root area alone
The most useful thing you can do for a flowering cherry is to decide, once, that the ground beneath it is off limits and then hold to that. The feeding roots are shallow and spread wider than the branches, and they respond badly to being cut, compacted or covered. Digging a border under a cherry, forking over the grass, laying a path across the roots or trenching for a cable are all common jobs that cost the tree a share of its root system, and the bill arrives one to three years later as thin growth and dieback in the top of the crown.
Cultivating around the base has a second cost specific to grafted trees: a spade through a shallow root triggers suckering from the rootstock at that point, so a tidy-up under the tree in spring can produce a thicket of shoots by midsummer.
The practical version of this rule is a permanent mulched circle. Take the grass out to at least the width of the canopy, keep the ground covered with two to three inches (5 to 8 cm) of composted bark or garden compost, top it up once a year, and never put a fork into it. Weeds that appear come out by hand or get smothered with more mulch.
That mulch is doing several jobs at once. It holds moisture in the exact layer the roots occupy, it removes the grass that would otherwise compete for the same shallow water, it keeps mowers and string trimmers away from thin bark that never heals from a nick, and it feeds the tree slowly as it breaks down. It comfortably outperforms any fertilizer you could apply.

Watering: much less than most people give
Once established, which takes about two growing seasons, a flowering cherry in open ground is close to self sufficient in any climate with reasonable summer rain. The wide root spread that makes it vulnerable to disturbance also makes it good at finding water. Routine watering of a mature tree is unnecessary and, on heavy ground, actively harmful.
The exception is genuine drought. If three weeks or more pass with no meaningful rain in hot weather, and especially if the tree is under ten years old, give the root area one long, slow soak that penetrates rather than several light waterings. A hose left trickling for half an hour, moved to two or three positions around the canopy edge, does more than an hour with a sprinkler. Then leave it for at least a fortnight.
Read the tree rather than the calendar. Early leaf yellowing and leaf drop in late summer is often drought stress rather than autumn arriving early, and it costs you next spring's flowers because bud formation is happening at exactly that time. Wilting in the heat of the afternoon that recovers by morning is not, on an established tree, a call to water.
Winter watering is never needed in the ground, and standing water in winter is one of the fastest ways to kill a cherry. If your soil holds water through the cold months, that is a drainage problem to fix at the site, not something to manage with the hose.
Feeding, and why restraint is the right instinct
Most flowering cherries in ordinary garden soil under an annual mulch never need fertilizer. Growth that is pushed with nitrogen comes out long, soft and sappy, and soft cherry growth is exactly what aphids colonise and what bacterial canker enters most easily. A well fed cherry is often a sicker cherry.
If a tree has genuinely stalled, with short annual shoots of under four inches (10 cm) and small pale leaves, apply a balanced slow release fertilizer once in early spring, at the rate on the label or below it, spread over the whole root area and watered in through the mulch. Do not repeat it later in the season. Feeding after early summer produces growth that has not hardened before the first frosts and dies back over winter.
A tree that is flowering poorly is more often short of light, or recovering from root damage, or simply too young, than short of fertilizer. Work through those before reaching for a feed. High potassium feeds sold for flowering will not overcome a shaded position or a root run that was cut through last year.
Do not use lawn feed and weed products anywhere near a cherry. The selective herbicides in them are taken up by shallow tree roots and produce twisted, narrow, distorted new leaves the following spring that people routinely mistake for a virus.
Suckers, grass and the trunk itself
Because ornamental cherries are grafted, vigorous shoots will appear from the rootstock. They come from below the graft union on the trunk or straight up out of the soil, sometimes several feet away, and their leaves usually look plainer and coarser than those of the tree above. Left alone they grow faster than the grafted top and will eventually take the tree over.
Remove them by pulling, not cutting. Trace the shoot to where it joins the trunk or root, scrape the soil away if it is underground, grip it low and wrench it downward and sideways so it tears away with the ring of dormant buds at its base. A shoot cut off cleanly with pruners leaves those buds intact and returns as three or four shoots. Do this while they are young and flexible; a sucker left until it is woody has to be cut, and then it will keep coming back.
Keep grass away from the trunk permanently. Beyond the water competition, the real risk is mechanical: cherry bark is thin and smooth, and a string trimmer nick or a mower knock creates a wound that this tree seals poorly and that canker organisms enter readily. A mulched circle removes the need to bring machinery anywhere near the bark.
Do not tie anything to the trunk and leave it. Check any tie or tree guard twice a year on a young tree, loosen it before it bites, and take it off entirely once the tree stands on its own. Girdling by a forgotten tie is one of the more depressing ways to lose an otherwise healthy cherry.
What is worth recording each year
Three notes cover most of what you will want to know later. First, the date the tree comes into flower and the date the petals finish, kept year after year. A flowering season that gets steadily shorter or later is one of the earliest readable signs that something has changed at the roots. Second, any work done anywhere near the root area, with dates: paths, trenches, deliveries stacked on the lawn, a border dug. Third, the length of the year's new shoots, measured on a couple of branches each winter.
That shoot length is the single most useful number on a cherry. Healthy young trees put on eighteen inches (45 cm) or more a year; a mature tree in good health manages six to twelve inches (15 to 30 cm). When that figure falls to two or three inches (5 to 8 cm) and stays there, the tree is telling you it is under stress or entering its long decline, and you will only know it dropped if you wrote down what it used to be.
