The crop load is the thing you are managing
This tree does not have the problem most home citrus has. A lemon in a pot typically grows too strongly and fruits too little. Shikuwasa does the opposite: it stays small and dense, it throws relatively short twiggy growth rather than long rank shoots, and it sets fruit in tight clusters along that short wood until a branch you can span with one hand is carrying thirty small fruit. A tree four feet (120 cm) tall routinely ripens a crop that startles anyone whose experience is with larger citrus.
Every care decision therefore reduces to one question: can the root system supply what the fruit is demanding. A shortage of water, a shortage of nutrients or a pot that has run out of room all announce themselves the same way, as fruit dropping in early summer rather than as a tree that looks ill. By the time the foliage looks wrong you have already lost part of that season's crop.
It also means that a heavy year takes far more out of the tree than its size suggests, and a tree allowed to carry everything it sets will alternate between a huge year and an almost bare one. Thinning is ordinary maintenance on this plant, not a refinement for perfectionists.
Watering: steady beats generous
Water when the top inch (2-3 cm) of soil or compost has dried, and then water until it runs freely from the base of the pot. Giving a container citrus a small drink often is the worst possible pattern, because it leaves the bottom third of the rootball permanently dry and the top third permanently wet. In the ground, one long soak every few days beats a daily sprinkle by a wide margin.
Swings between bone dry and saturated are what cause both fruit drop and split fruit, and on this crop that matters more than usual. The rind is thin, so it has less capacity to stretch when the flesh inside swells suddenly after a drought is broken. A tree that dries out hard and is then drenched can show splits within a few days. Through high summer a cropping tree in a pot may need water every day; through winter it may need it once a fortnight or less.
Cold wet compost in winter kills more container citrus than cold air does, and on a subtropical plant that is already at its limit for cold, a rotting root system is what turns a survivable winter into a dead tree. Cut watering back sharply once growth stops, let the mix approach dryness before you water again, and never leave the pot standing in water at any time of year.

Feeding a small tree with a large appetite
Use a citrus-specific fertilizer, high in nitrogen and carrying the trace elements, from the first sign of growth in spring until the end of summer. A general balanced feed leaves citrus short, because the ratio these plants want is unusual and because iron, manganese and magnesium matter here as much as the main three. Fortnightly for a potted tree in active growth, or a slow-release granular feed applied twice through the season for one in the ground.
Stop feeding at the end of summer without exception. Nitrogen applied late pushes a soft flush of growth that has no time to harden before cold arrives, and on a plant with as little cold tolerance as this one that soft wood is precisely what a marginal frost destroys. Through winter, feed at a quarter strength or not at all.
This tree also has an unusual complication: if you are leaving part of the crop to color up, the fruit stays on the branch for months after the green picking, drawing on the tree the whole time. A tree holding a late crop needs its full summer feeding program honoured properly, or the fruit that is meant to sweeten simply stalls. Feed generously in season precisely so that you can stop cleanly at the end of it.
Hard tap water raises the pH of container compost over time and locks up iron, which shows as new leaves yellowing between green veins. Where your water is hard, use collected rainwater for a potted shikuwasa when you can, and plan to repot into fresh mix every few years rather than only top-dressing.
Thinning, support and keeping the middle open
Thin the fruit once the natural early-summer drop has finished and you can see what has genuinely set. Leaving every fruit gives you a very large number of undersized ones with poor rind, exhausts the tree and locks it into alternating heavy and bare years.
- Wait for the natural drop to finish The tree sheds a proportion of its own set a few weeks after flowering. Do nothing until that has stopped, or you will thin twice and finish with far less than you intended.
- Take crowded clusters down to two or three Where six or eight fruit are packed onto one short shoot, remove the smallest and any that are touching. On thin-skinned fruit, two pressed together will rub each other's rind through by harvest.
- Remove scarred and misshapen fruit first Thorn scratches, wind rub and distorted fruit are the obvious candidates. You are deciding which fruit the tree will finish, so keep the clean ones.
- Thin harder where you plan to leave fruit to color Fruit you intend to hold on the tree for months needs more room and more of the tree's resources than fruit you will pick green. Leave those clusters lighter still, at one or two fruit.
- Tie up loaded branches before they bend A slender branch carrying a dense cluster will bow to the ground and can tear at the crotch. Tie it up to a stake or a neighboring limb with a soft tie rather than propping it from underneath.
- Rub out inward shoots as they appear New shoots heading into the middle of a naturally dense tree will only be cut out later. Removing them with a gloved thumb in early summer takes seconds and leaves no wound worth mentioning.
Handle it like fruit, not like a shrub
The rind on this fruit is thin and the oil glands sit close to the surface, so ordinary garden handling damages the crop in a way it would not on a thicker-skinned citrus. Pushing through the canopy to reach a hose tap, leaning a ladder against a fruiting branch or letting a wandering stem of something else rub across a cluster all leave marks that are still there at harvest.
Give yourself a way in. Keep one side of the tree accessible, move pots so you are not squeezing past them, and route hoses and ties away from fruiting wood. This sounds fussy until the first year you compare the fruit from the open side of a tree with the fruit from the side that sits against a fence.
Keep a running note of water, feed and crop
Write down when you started and stopped feeding each year, and roughly how many fruit you left on the tree after thinning. Set that beside the harvest you actually took. Two or three seasons of those numbers side by side will show you the crop level your particular tree can carry without going bare the following year, and no general guide can give you that figure.
Also record the date the early-summer drop finished, because it moves with the season and it is your signal to thin. Once you know it falls a predictable number of weeks after flowering in your own garden, the timing stops being guesswork. Add a note of how many fruit you discarded for rubbed or scarred rind and where on the tree they were growing, because a recurring hotspot almost always points at a shelter problem you can fix once and for good.
