Know what you are planting before you dig the hole
The white-flowered fragrant olive is a slow, dense broadleaf evergreen. It puts on modest growth each year, holds its leaves to the ground when it is given light, and thickens rather than stretches. That combination is exactly what makes it one of the best plants available for a hedge or an evergreen screen, and it is also why an ill-considered position is so expensive: you cannot correct a bad site with two seasons of growth the way you can with a fast shrub. A plant put in the wrong place stays wrong for years.
The flowers are small, clustered in the leaf joints, and creamy white rather than showy. Nobody grows this shrub for the look of the bloom. They grow it for the scent, which carries a surprising distance on still air, and for the wall of clean dark foliage it makes the rest of the year. Both of those requirements point at the same conclusion when you choose a spot: put it where people walk past it and where it will not be scorched by wind.
Sun, shade and the wind problem
Flowering is driven by light. A plant in six or more hours of direct sun sets buds along the whole length of its ripened shoots and scents an entire garden. The same plant in half a day of sun still grows perfectly well, still makes a good screen, and flowers at maybe half the intensity. In deep shade under a dense tree canopy it survives, thins out low down, and may flower barely at all. Part shade is a legitimate choice for a screen; it is a poor choice if the scent is the reason you planted it.
Cold drying wind is the other half of the siting question, and it does more visible damage than cold alone. Freezing wind pulls moisture out of the leaves faster than frozen roots can replace it, and the result is brown scorched leaf margins across the exposed face of the plant, sometimes with whole shoots killed back. A shrub in the lee of a wall, a fence or an existing planting comes through the same winter untouched. If your only available spot faces the prevailing winter wind, plan on a temporary windbreak screen for the first few winters while the plant thickens.
Soil is undemanding but drainage is not negotiable. This shrub will take clay, thin ground and mildly acid to neutral soil without complaint, and it will die slowly in ground where water stands after heavy rain. Roots that sit wet in cold weather rot, and the symptom shows up months later as a plant that looks dull, drops interior leaves and refuses to push new growth.

Getting it in the ground
Plant while the soil is workable and the plant is not in active growth or full bloom. In mild climates that means the cool half of the year; where winters are hard, wait until the worst frosts have passed so the roots have a full growing season to establish before their first winter. Avoid planting into hot dry weather, because a newly planted evergreen keeps transpiring through leaves it cannot yet supply.
- Dig wide, not deep Make the hole two to three times the width of the root ball and no deeper than the root ball itself. Loosen the sides of the hole with a fork so roots are not turned back by a glazed wall of clay. Planting depth is the one measurement that must be exact: the top of the root ball sits level with the surrounding soil, or an inch (2.5 cm) proud on heavy ground. Buried stems rot.
- Tease the roots out Container plants of a slow shrub are often pot bound. Slide the plant out and check. If roots are circling the outside of the ball, pull them free with your fingers or score the ball vertically in three or four places with a knife an inch (2.5 cm) deep. Roots left circling keep circling and the plant strangles itself years later.
- Backfill with the soil you removed Do not fill the hole with rich compost. On heavy ground that creates a sump that collects water, and it gives roots no reason to leave the hole. Use the excavated soil, work it in around the ball in stages, and firm gently with your hands rather than stamping it down. Leave a shallow saucer of soil around the edge to hold water.
- Water in hard, then mulch Give it two to three gallons (8 to 12 liters) slowly so the water reaches the bottom of the root ball rather than running off. Then spread two inches (5 cm) of bark or leaf mulch over the whole root zone, keeping a hand's width clear of the stem. Mulch does more for establishment than any fertilizer you could add.
- Stake only if it rocks A shrub this dense catches wind while its roots are still in the original ball. If the plant visibly rocks at the base, put in a short low stake angled into the prevailing wind and tie it near the bottom of the stem, not near the top. Remove the stake after the first full year so the stem can thicken.
Spacing, hedges and growing it in a pot
For a single specimen, allow the mature width you actually intend to maintain plus a couple of feet (60 cm) of clearance from paths and walls. For a hedge or a screen, space plants at roughly two thirds of the width you want the finished hedge to be, commonly two and a half to three and a half feet (75 to 105 cm) apart in a single row. Closer spacing does not make the hedge fill in faster in any useful sense; it just makes competition worse and produces bare lower stems in the middle of the run. For a thicker barrier, use two staggered rows about two feet (60 cm) apart rather than one crowded row.
At the cold edge of its range the practical answer is a large container that can be moved. Use a pot at least eighteen inches (45 cm) across for a young plant, filled with a free-draining loam-based mix rather than a light peat-type compost that dries out and blows over. Stand it out in full sun through the growing season, then move it into an unheated but sheltered spot before hard frost arrives: a cold porch, an unheated greenhouse or against a house wall under an overhang. It needs light and cool air over winter, not warmth.
Write down the planting date, the exact position, the size of the plant when it went in, and which direction the prevailing winter wind comes from. Two winters later, when one side of the plant is browning and the other is clean, that note is what tells you whether you have a wind problem or a drainage problem.
