Rust is the signature disease, and it starts underneath
Snapdragon rust announces itself as small orange to chestnut brown pustules on the undersides of the lower leaves, usually with a pale yellow spot showing through on the upper surface directly above each one. That is the stage at which you can still do something. By the time the upper surface is visibly mottled and the lower leaves are yellowing and dropping, the fungus is established through the plant and the season is effectively decided.
It thrives in the conditions that follow a warm humid spell: leaves that stay wet for six hours or more, still air between crowded plants, and splashing water carrying spores from the soil onto the lowest foliage. Spores land, germinate on the wet leaf, and produce a new generation of pustules within a fortnight, so an infection that looks trivial in one week can cover the planting in three.
Turn over the bottom leaves once a week from midsummer onward. It takes under a minute per plant and it is the only reliable way to catch it early. Pick off and bin affected leaves as you find them, take the worst plants out entirely rather than nursing them, and never compost rusted material, which simply returns the spores to the bed.
Prevention is spacing, airflow and watering technique rather than chemicals. Plant tall types 8 to 12 inches (20 to 30 cm) apart, water at the base in the morning so foliage dries by evening, mulch to stop soil splash, and avoid the soft sappy growth that heavy nitrogen produces. Where rust has been bad two years running, grow snapdragons somewhere else in the garden the following season.

Damping off, and why it is a sowing mistake
Damping off kills snapdragon seedlings faster than any pest. It shows as seedlings toppling over at soil level, stems pinched and dark at the base, spreading outward through the tray in a widening patch over two or three days. Once it starts in a dense tray it takes the lot, and there is nothing to be done for the affected seedlings.
It is almost always a consequence of how the seed was sown. Snapdragon seed is fine and easily sown too thickly, and a crowded tray gives exactly the still, humid, permanently wet conditions the fungi need. The propagator lid that helped germination becomes the cause of death if it is left on for a week after the seedlings are up.
Prevention is straightforward: sow thinly, use fresh compost and clean trays, take the cover off the moment the first seedlings emerge, water from below and only when the surface starts to pale, and give the tray as much light and gentle air movement as you can. A cool bright windowsill with the window cracked open on mild days loses very few seedlings.
If it starts, act immediately. Remove the collapsed seedlings and the compost immediately around them, stop watering until the surface has genuinely dried, increase airflow, and transplant the healthy seedlings into fresh compost sooner than you planned. Waiting to see whether it spreads means it will.
- Turn over the lower leaves weekly From midsummer, lift the bottom two or three leaves on each plant and look at the undersides. Orange pustules found at this stage can be picked off; found a month later they cannot.
- Bin infected material, do not compost it Rusted leaves and whole rusted plants go in the rubbish. A compost pile that never gets properly hot returns the spores to the same bed the following spring.
- Water at the base, in the morning Wet foliage overnight is what lets rust and downy mildew germinate. A hose laid under the plants in the morning removes almost the whole risk at no extra effort.
- Check growing tips for aphids on every round Colonies start small and in one place, on the newest growth and the flower buds. Thirty seconds of looking twice a week prevents nearly every serious infestation.
- Move the planting after a bad rust year Two consecutive bad seasons in the same bed means the site is the problem, usually shade, still air or splash. Grow them somewhere sunnier and more open next year.
Aphids, slugs and the things that take young plants
Most snapdragons that are lost are lost small. Slugs and snails graze newly planted seedlings off at the base overnight, and a plant taken that way does not regrow from the stump. Protection has to be in place on planting day rather than after you notice damage, and a few evening checks with a torch in the first week tell you exactly what you are dealing with.
Aphids arrive on the growing tips and flower buds from late spring. In modest numbers they are a nuisance rather than a threat: they distort a few new leaves and leave sticky honeydew that goes sooty black. Knock them off with a jet of water or squash them by hand, repeat three days later because one pass never gets them all, and leave the ladybirds and hoverfly larvae to hold the population down.
Avoid broad spectrum insecticides. Snapdragons are worked constantly by bumblebees, which are heavy enough to force the flower open in a way lighter insects cannot, and spraying the flowers costs the garden more than the aphids do. If you must intervene, use a soap based product in the evening, on the affected tips only.
Spider mites appear in hot dry spells, particularly on plants against a wall, showing as a fine pale stippling on the leaves with faint webbing in the leaf axils. Hosing the foliage down in the morning, when it has all day to dry, knocks the population back without creating a rust problem. Botrytis turns spent flowers to brown mush in wet weather, and cutting spikes out promptly is the whole answer.
Keeping a record of what went wrong and where
Write down the date you first see rust each year. It arrives at roughly the same point in the season in a given garden, and knowing that date in advance turns a reaction into a plan: start turning leaves over a fortnight earlier, and get the spacing and mulch right before the weather that brings it.
Mark the position of every plant you take out for rust or rot. If the same corner of the bed is affected two years running, the cause is the site rather than the plants, and it is almost always shade, a wall that blocks air movement, or ground that stays wet after rain.
Keep seedling losses separate from losses later in the season. Twenty seedlings lost to damping off in a tray and five mature plants lost to rust in late summer are entirely different problems with entirely different fixes, and a single figure for the year hides both.
Note the spacing you actually used, not the spacing you intended. Nearly every bad rust year traces back to plants set closer than planned because there were more seedlings than space, and having last year's real figure written down makes it much easier to throw the surplus away.
Snapdragon rust is specific to snapdragons and their close relatives, so it does not move onto unrelated plants in the same bed. That also means rotating the planting position genuinely helps: moving snapdragons to a bed that has not grown them for two or three years removes most of the overwintering spore load.
