Crown and root rot is what actually kills statice
The classic failure looks sudden. A healthy rosette goes dull, then gray and soft at the very center, and within a few days the whole plant lifts away from the ground with almost no root attached. The base of the crown is brown and mushy and smells sour. This is root and crown rot, driven by fungi that live in most soils and only get their chance when the ground stays wet around the crown.
It is not a disease you treat. By the time the center is soft the plant is finished, and the only useful response is to lift it, remove the surrounding soil if you can, and avoid replanting statice in the same spot. What you can do is make it unlikely in the first place, and everything on that list is about water and air rather than chemicals.
Plant on a ridge or a raised bed, space at ten to twelve inches (25 to 30 cm) so air moves through the rosettes, keep every kind of mulch clear of the crown, water at the soil rather than over the plant, and stop watering established plants unless there is real drought. On heavy ground add coarse grit rather than compost. Statice grown lean and dry rarely rots.
Losses concentrate in one part of a bed rather than scattering evenly. Mark on a sketch exactly where each plant that rotted was standing. After one season the wet corner of the bed will be obvious, and after two you will stop planting statice there.
Botrytis is the one that ruins the harvest
Gray mold matters with statice in a way it does not with most flowers, because the papery calyx is exactly the sort of dry tissue botrytis colonises once it gets damp. The first sign is small brown flecks on the colored part of the spray, then a fuzzy gray bloom in the center of the head where moisture is trapped. A spray that has been touched by botrytis will never dry cleanly.
It arrives after two or three days of wet, humid weather, especially when the sprays are open and rain has sat in them. There is nothing to spray at that point; the useful move is to cut. A spray that is at the right stage and is heading into a forecast wet spell should come off the plant now, not in three days.
Remove and bin any spoiled heads rather than composting them, because they carry the spores straight back to the plant. Cut low, keep the rosettes uncrowded so air moves through, and always bring cut stems indoors to dry in a place with moving air rather than a still damp shed.

The minor pests, and how much to care
Aphids gather in the center of the rosette and on the young flower stems, and on a plant grown hard they rarely reach damaging numbers. Their presence in quantity is a signal worth reading: a statice that is covered in aphids is usually a statice that has been fed or planted in rich soil, and the soft growth is the invitation. Wash them off with a jet of water, check again a week later, and do not reach for anything stronger.
Thrips are more annoying because they mark the flower stems and calyces with silvery streaks that show clearly in a dried bunch. They arrive from long grass and weeds around the plot, so a clean edge is worth more than any treatment. Stems already marked will not improve, so cut them for compost rather than trying to save them.
Slugs are only a threat for the first two or three weeks after planting out, while the rosette is small and tender. After that the leathery leaves stop interesting them. Do the night checks early, keep a clear dry collar around each plant, and the problem disappears on its own.
- Inspect the crown weekly, not the flowers Part the outer leaves and look into the center of the rosette. Aphids, early rot and slug damage all show there first, while the flower stems above look perfectly healthy for another week.
- Cut ahead of a wet forecast Any spray with nearly all its tiny white flowers open should be cut before three days of rain rather than after. This one habit prevents most botrytis losses in a normal season.
- Bin, do not compost, diseased material Moldy heads and rotted crowns carry spores that survive a garden compost pile. Everything else, including clean spent plants at the end of the season, composts perfectly well.
- Clear the bed completely at season end Pull the old crowns and rake off every fallen leaf. Rust and botrytis both overwinter in debris, and statice grown in the same bed year after year on a clean surface stays remarkably healthy.
Knowing when to give up on a plant
Statice is worth persevering with when the damage is above ground and worth pulling when it is at the crown. A plant that has lost half its leaves to mildew, or had a flush of stems spoiled by botrytis, will produce again in a few weeks and costs you nothing to keep. A plant whose crown center has gone soft is dead already and only spreads the problem by staying in the ground.
The test is simple. Take hold of the rosette and pull gently upwards. A healthy plant resists firmly because the taproot is holding it; a rotting one lifts with the light resistance of something no longer anchored. If it lifts, it goes in the bin.
Where several plants in a row go the same way, the cause is nearly always the site rather than the plants. Rather than replacing them in the same place, move the following year's crop to the driest, sharpest, sunniest ground you have, and add grit rather than organic matter. Statice fails on kindness far more often than on neglect.
