A huge vine and no flowers
This is the classic winged bean disappointment, and it has two causes that look identical from the path. The first is day length: most stock flowers only as the nights lengthen past about twelve hours, so a plant grown through a short northern summer puts everything into vine, begins flowering as the season closes and is cut down by frost with nothing but pinhead pods. The second is nitrogen. A legume that is fixing its own nitrogen and also being fed a nitrogen-rich fertilizer or planted into fresh manure builds leaf instead of flower.
Tell them apart by the calendar and by the leaves. Nitrogen excess shows as unusually large, dark, soft leaves on very thick stems, and stopping all feeding will bring flowers within two or three weeks. Day length shows as a normal-looking, healthy plant that simply refuses to bud until late in the season, and no change of feeding will move it. The fix for that one is a different sowing next year: an early or day-neutral type, sown as soon as the soil is warm.

Bud and pod drop
Winged bean sets buds generously and sheds them at the first check. A single dry spell at flowering, a sudden heat spike, or a rootball disturbed by hoeing too close will show up as yellowing buds on the path underneath within two or three days. The plant is not diseased; it is balancing what it can support against what it has water for.
Prevention is unglamorous: mulch, deep watering two or three times a week rather than a daily sprinkle, and no cultivation within a foot (30 cm) of the stem once the plant is established. If a heatwave is forecast, water thoroughly the evening before rather than trying to catch up during it.
The pests that actually matter
Winged bean is tougher than most beans, and in many gardens it goes through the season with nothing worse than aphids. The exceptions are worth knowing because two of them attack the parts you cannot see until you cut them open.
Inspect twice a week, in the morning, and look at the undersides of young leaves, the growing tips and the base of each pod stalk. Most of these problems are trivial if you catch them in the first week and expensive if you find them at harvest.

Root knot galls and nitrogen-fixing nodules are easy to confuse. Nodules are small, round, attached to the outside of the root and rub off between your fingers; galls are swellings of the root itself and cannot be removed. Pink inside a nodule means it is working.
Rots, spots and cold damage
The heavy canopy holds moisture, so leaf spot and powdery mildew appear in a wet late season on plants that were never thinned. Take a few of the oldest interior leaves out through mid-season, water at soil level rather than over the top, and clear fallen leaves off the ground beneath the row.
Root and stem rot is a drainage problem, not an infection you can spray. Winged bean tolerates heat and rain but not standing water at the crown; on heavy ground grow it on a ridge or in a raised bed. Cold is the other structural risk: growth stops below about 59F (15C) and any frost kills the plant outright, so protect nothing and simply plan the season around it.
- Thin the interior once at mid-season Remove a handful of the oldest, largest leaves from the congested middle so you can see daylight through the vine. Do not strip it or the pods will scald.
- Water the soil, not the canopy A can at the base or a drip line keeps the leaves dry. Overhead watering in the evening is the single biggest cause of leaf spot on this crop.
- Clear fallen leaves weekly Spotted leaves on the ground reinfect the plant above them every time it rains. Bin them rather than composting them.
- Pull and destroy a wilting plant If a plant wilts every afternoon despite wet soil, lift it and look at the roots. Galls or a brown, hollow stem base mean it will not recover and is a source for its neighbors.
Keep a record of what went wrong and when
The problems on this crop repeat year after year in the same garden, and the notes that pay off are the dull ones. Write down the date of the first flower, the date you first saw aphids, which end of the row wilted first, and whether the plants that failed were on the wet side of the bed. Mark the position of any plant whose roots showed nematode galls, because that ground needs three years without legumes.
One season of notes turns most of these problems into scheduling decisions rather than emergencies. If your first flower is consistently only a fortnight before your first frost, no amount of feeding or spraying is the answer; the answer is an early type sown earlier, and only a written date will tell you that clearly.
