This plant has no reserve, so the margin is small
Wire vine carries a very large number of small leaves on stems the thickness of thread. There is no fleshy tissue anywhere in that structure storing water for a bad week. When the compost empties, the plant runs out almost immediately, and the visible result is stems going brittle within a day or two rather than the slow wilt you get on most houseplants.
Aim for compost that stays evenly damp, drying to about half an inch (1 cm) down between waterings and no further. It also will not tolerate standing in water, so the target is a fairly narrow band: damp, never wet, never dry.
There is no useful weekly rule. The same plant needs water every three days on a warm windowsill in summer and every ten in a cool room in winter. Check the compost, not the calendar.
How to check, and how to water
If water runs straight through and out of the drainage holes in a few seconds, the root ball has shrunk from the sides of the pot or the plant is badly root-bound. Stand the whole pot in a bowl of water for fifteen to twenty minutes, let it drain completely, and go back to normal watering. If it happens repeatedly, the plant needs repotting.
- Test with a finger, not by looking Push a finger into the compost to the first knuckle. Compost clinging to your finger means wait a day; dry and clean means water now. The surface tells you almost nothing on a plant that dries this fast.
- Learn the weight of the pot Lift the pot straight after watering and again a few days later. On a small pot the difference is obvious, and weight becomes the fastest daily check once you know the plant. This matters more here than on plants with a wider margin.
- Water until it runs from the base A full soak wets the entire root ball and flushes accumulated feed salts. Small daily sips only wet the top layer, leaving the deeper roots dry while the surface stays permanently damp.
- Empty the saucer within ten minutes Roots standing in drainage water suffocate and rot. This single habit prevents most root problems on a container-grown wire vine.
- Use tepid water Cold water straight from the tap chills the roots and checks growth in cool weather. Water left standing in the room overnight is at the right temperature.
What happens when it dries out, and what to do
Understand this clearly, because it changes how you respond. Within a day or two of the compost going dry, whole sections of stem turn brown and snap crisply between the fingers. Those sections are dead. Watering will not bring them back, and waiting a fortnight to see achieves nothing except an untidy plant.
The recovery route is different from most houseplants. Soak the pot thoroughly, then cut every crisp stem out, back to wood that is still supple. Scratch the bark near the base: green under the skin means the plant is alive, and it will break new shoots from that live wood in three to five weeks in the growing season. Do not feed until those shoots are an inch (2.5 cm) long, and do not repot a plant with no leaves into a larger pot.

What moves the interval
Four factors change the number more than anything else. Temperature is the largest: the same plant uses roughly twice as much water at 72F (22C) as at 55F (13C), which is why a cool room is easier to manage as well as better for the plant. Pot size and material come next, with a small terracotta pot drying two or three times faster than a larger plastic one. Then light and airflow, and then how root-bound the plant is.
Outdoors, every one of those factors works against you at once. Sun and wind together can take a container from damp to bone dry in a single warm day, so a plant standing outside for the summer needs checking daily rather than on the indoor rhythm.
Reset the interval after every repotting and every move between rooms or outdoors. Carrying the old rhythm across a change is the commonest cause of both drying incidents and rot on this plant.
Keep a short watering record
Note the date each time you water, along with the season and where the plant is standing. Within two months you will have a real interval for each position in your home instead of a guess, and you will be able to see at a glance when it has been too long.
Record any crisping incident next to the watering dates, and the date the plant reshot afterwards. That pairing shows you your own margin, and it is usually smaller than people expect: most drying incidents follow an interval stretched by only two or three days over the usual one.
