Overview
Eight Ball is a hybrid round zucchini from Hollar Seeds and a 1999 All-America Selections winner. Instead of a cylinder, it produces dark green spheres 2 to 3 inches across, about the size of a baseball at picking time, on a compact, open bush that spreads roughly 3 feet and stands about 2 feet tall. The name comes from the resemblance to a billiard ball. The shape is the whole point: hollow one out, fill it, and it sits upright in the oven without rolling, and a single fruit makes a neat one-person portion. Pick at 3 to 4 inches while the skin is glossy; larger fruit gets tough and starchy. Very early, with first fruit in 5 to 7 weeks, and the small plant suits raised beds and containers.
