Overview
Black Beauty is the zucchini most people picture: cylindrical fruit so dark green it reads as black, with only slight flecking and glossy, tender skin. It was bred at the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station out of Salerno, itself an Improved Fordhook Zucchini, and won All-America Selections honors in 1957 as the quickest and heaviest bearing among black-green zucchinis of its era. The plants are upright bushes that take little room and make picking easy. Harvest at 6 to 8 inches; fruit sizes up fast, so check every day or two at peak, because an overlooked giant slows further fruit set. Sow 1 inch deep in warm soil after frost and thin to the strongest plants. Widely adapted and still a dependable choice for any garden.
