Overview

Magda is a Johnny's Selected Seeds hybrid of the Lebanese cousa type, released in 2000, and it eats quite differently from Italian zucchini. Fruit is pale creamy green, blocky and tapered with a slight bulge toward the blossom end, waxy-skinned, with white flesh that is firmer, drier, and sweeter than standard zucchini, with a nutty note. Harvest at 3 to 4 inches, when that flavor peaks; fruit of 4 to 6 inches is right for stuffing, the traditional Middle Eastern use, but bigger fruit goes bland and seedy. The pale, slightly waxy skin is a handy harvest cue. Plants are compact bushes without trailing vines, good for raised beds. Direct sow after frost; in hot climates a second sowing in late summer carries the harvest into fall. 48 days.
