Overview
Fordhook Zucchini came out of Burpee's Fordhook Farm trial grounds in Pennsylvania and was an early All-America Selections winner, older than nearly all the hybrid zucchini in today's catalogs. The vigorous plant forms an upright, compact bush and bears smooth, dark green fruit that is cylindrical to slightly curved. Pick at 6 to 8 inches for tender, nearly seedless flesh, and during hot weather check daily, since heavy fruit set means squash size up fast and oversized fruit stalls new blossoms. Being open pollinated, its seed comes true, so you can save it year after year. Direct sow, in hills or in rows, once the soil warms; in hot regions a midsummer sowing keeps the harvest going once early plants fade from vine borers or mildew.
