Overview
Tatume is a traditional Mexican squash and one of the toughest summer squashes for hot climates, staying productive through Texas and Gulf Coast summers that finish off zucchini. The vines bear round to slightly oval, smooth, dark green fruit shaped like a small pumpkin; cut at 3 to 5 inches before the rind hardens for a firm, slightly sweet summer squash, or leave fruit to ripen into a yellow-tan winter squash with dry, pale orange flesh. Heat and insect tolerant, and popular in Mexican American kitchens for caldos, guisados, and stuffed calabaza. Direct sow 1 inch deep in well-drained soil after frost; in hot regions a second sowing in late August gives a fall crop. Give the vines room.
