Where to Keep an Aeonium: Sun, Shelter and a Plant That Rests in Summer

Aeoniums grow through the cool damp half of the year and shut down in heat, so the right position changes twice a season. They want hard light in winter, some relief in high summer, and no frost at all.

The year runs backwards, and position has to follow

Almost every other succulent on your bench grows in summer and sleeps in winter. Aeonium does the opposite. It comes from island climates with mild wet winters and long rainless summers, and it has built its year around that: roots active and leaves expanding through autumn, winter and spring, then a hard stop when sustained heat arrives. Once you accept that, positioning stops being confusing, because you are simply giving it good conditions during a season most people ignore and a quiet corner during the season everyone else calls the growing season.

In practice that means the best spot in autumn and spring is the brightest one you have, outdoors if your climate allows, and the best spot in the hottest weeks of summer is somewhere lightly shaded and airy where nothing much is asked of the plant. Two positions, one plant, swapped twice a year. If you can only manage one, choose the bright one and give the plant afternoon shade with a screen rather than moving it.

A summer aeonium that closes its rosettes into tight buds and sheds its lower leaves is resting, not dying. It looks alarming and it is completely normal. The plant that gets moved somewhere darker and watered heavily to fix it is the one that actually dies.

How much light, and what too much looks like

Through the growing half of the year an aeonium wants at least five to six hours of direct sun, and it will take all day. That light is what keeps the rosettes flat and wide with short internodes, and it is what brings out the deep colors in the darker-leaved forms. In weak light the rosette funnels upward, the leaves go a uniform light green, the spacing between leaves stretches, and the stem below thins and leans toward the window.

The limit is not brightness but heat combined with brightness. Sustained days above 90F (32C) with the plant in full afternoon sun will scorch the upper leaf surfaces, leaving dry tan or bleached patches that never recover, and the risk is highest on a plant that has just come out of a dim room or a shipping box. Move any plant into stronger light over two weeks rather than in one step, and give it a couple of hours of shade in the hottest part of a summer day.

Temperature is the hard boundary

Aeonium has no frost tolerance worth relying on. A brief dip to around 30F (minus 1C) may leave a plant with scarred outer leaves and a survivable core, but a real freeze turns the leaves translucent and the growing point to mush within a day, and there is no recovery from that. Treat 40F (4C) as the point at which a plant that lives outdoors comes in, and do not gamble on a mild forecast in late autumn.

At the other end, the plant is not damaged by heat so much as switched off by it. Once days settle above about 86F (30C) the rosettes close, the lower leaves go papery and drop, and root activity all but stops. Nothing you do speeds it up. The useful response is to reduce demands on the plant: more air movement, less direct sun in the afternoon, and far less water. Growth resumes on its own when nights begin to cool.

Wind, rain and standing water

Moving air is a genuine benefit rather than something merely tolerated. Aeoniums hold water in the tight center of the rosette after rain or overhead watering, and a plant in a still corner keeps that water for a day or more, which in cool weather is where crown rot begins. An open position where the rosette dries within a couple of hours after a shower is worth more than any fungicide.

Strong wind is a different matter, because the plant is top heavy by design. A mature branched specimen carries all its weight at the ends of long stems over a small root plate, and a gust will snap a branch or tip the whole pot. Stand pots against a wall on the sheltered side, use a heavy container rather than a light plastic one, and stake a leaning stem before it breaks instead of after.

What to note about position

Position pays back in records more than almost anything else with this plant, because the effect shows up a full season later. For each plant, write down where it sat during the growing months, where it sat through the summer rest, and the two dates you moved it. Then, when growth restarts in autumn, note whether the new rosette came back wider or narrower than the one before.

Also record the date you brought plants under cover for the winter and the lowest temperature they saw. A single cold night that you did not notice explains a lot of otherwise mysterious spring collapses, and once you have your own figure for when the cold arrives on your site, you will move the plants a week earlier every year afterwards.
