Ajuga Problems: Crown Rot, Collapsed Patches and What Actually Stops Them

Bugleweed has one serious enemy: crown rot, which flattens circular patches of a dense mat in warm humid weather. Thinning and air movement prevent it, and there is no spray that reliably rescues it.

Crown rot: what it looks like and how fast it moves

The classic symptom is a patch of a healthy-looking mat going soft and brown within a few days of warm, still, humid weather. The rosettes in the middle of the patch collapse flat, the leaves lose their firmness and go translucent before they brown, and the crowns pull away from the soil with almost no resistance because the base of each stem has rotted through. Lift the dead leaves and you will often find a fine white webbing over the stems and the soil surface, sometimes with small round tan or brown bodies the size of a mustard seed sitting in it.

It spreads outward from a point, so the affected area is usually roughly circular and expands day by day, joining up with other patches until a large area of a mat has gone. In a bad year on a crowded planting, a bugleweed carpet that looked perfect in early summer can be half destroyed within three weeks of the first hot humid spell.

What makes it possible is always the same combination: dense growth, still air and moisture held between the leaves. The fungi responsible live in the soil and in the layer of dead leaves under the mat, and they are effectively always present in an established planting. They only become destructive when the plant's own density gives them the humidity they need at temperatures above roughly 80F (27C).

It is not the only rot bugleweed gets. In cold wet winters crowns rot more slowly, leaving irregular dead areas that show up in spring. The response to both is the same, because both are about water sitting where it should not.

Prevention: thinning and airflow do the work

There is no reliable cure once a patch has collapsed, so everything sensible about bugleweed and crown rot is preventive, and it comes down to keeping the mat open enough for air to move through it. A single-layer mat of rosettes sitting on soil dries out after rain within hours. A three-layer mat with a wad of dead leaves underneath stays damp for days, and that is the difference between a planting that shrugs off a humid week and one that dies in it.

Thin every year without fail, taking out a quarter to a third of the rosettes and clearing the dead leaf layer from underneath at the same time. Do it in early autumn where summers are hot and humid, so the mat goes into the following summer already open. That one job prevents more crown rot than everything else on this page combined.

Watering technique matters almost as much. Water at soil level, early in the day, and only when the plant actually needs it. Overhead watering in the evening in summer is close to an invitation. If a sprinkler or an irrigation line crosses the bed, either retime it or reroute it.

Give the planting at least one open side so air can move across it. Bugleweed hemmed in on all four sides by a wall, a fence, a shrub and a raised bed sits in still air all summer, and those are the plantings that lose patches every year. The same logic applies to overhanging shrubs: raise the skirt of anything low that is trapping air over the mat.

  1. Cut out the whole affected patch plus a margin Dig or pull out every rosette in the collapsed area and continue about six inches (15 cm) into apparently healthy growth around it. The plants at the edge are already infected even though they still look firm.
  2. Take the debris layer with it Scrape off the dead leaves and the top half inch (1 cm) of soil from the cleared area. That layer is where the fungal bodies survive, and leaving it there means the patch reappears in the same spot next summer.
  3. Bin the material, do not compost it Everything you removed goes in household waste or is burned where that is permitted. A domestic compost pile does not run hot enough to reliably kill the resting bodies, and spreading that compost distributes the problem.
  4. Thin the surrounding mat hard Open up the remaining planting by pulling out a third of the rosettes across the whole area, not just near the hole. Airflow through the survivors is what stops the next patch appearing.
  5. Leave the gap open until autumn Do not replant into the cleared ground during the hot humid part of the season. Let it stay bare and dry out, and fill it with rooted plantlets once temperatures have dropped.

Bugleweed is fast enough that a lost patch is an inconvenience rather than a disaster. A cleared area of a square foot or two closes over from the surrounding runners within one growing season, and replanting with rooted plantlets in autumn fills it faster still. Clear ruthlessly rather than trying to save marginal plants.

The smaller pests, and the ones that are not really problems

Slugs and snails graze bugleweed, especially in shaded damp plantings and especially on soft spring growth and the flower spikes. The damage is ragged holes and silvered trails rather than collapse, and it rarely threatens the plant. Reducing the damp debris layer during the annual thin removes most of their daytime shelter, which does more good than anything applied to the leaves.

Spider mites appear occasionally on plants stressed by heat and drought, particularly bugleweed grown in too much sun with dry roots. The sign is a fine pale stippling across the leaf surface and sometimes a faint webbing in the leaf axils. Fixing the underlying stress with a proper soak, and moving the planting somewhere less brutal in the long term, resolves it without any treatment.

Root weevil larvae chew through the roots in some regions, showing as rosettes that pull up with no root system at all and notched leaf edges from the adults. Rule out crown rot first, since collapsed rosettes look similar: rotted crowns are soft and dark at the base, while weevil-damaged plants have clean stems and simply no roots.

Deer and rabbits generally leave bugleweed alone, which is one reason it is planted where it is. A mat being grazed down is unusual enough to be worth checking for another explanation.

Keeping a record that actually helps next year

Crown rot is stubbornly repetitive: it comes back to the same low, still, shaded spots year after year, because the conditions that caused it are still there. Mark the position of every patch you clear, measured from something fixed like a path corner or a post, and note the date it appeared.

After two seasons the pattern is usually obvious. Patches clustering along one edge point to a drainage or airflow problem in that spot rather than to bad luck, and the answer may be to stop replanting there at all and let something else take that ground. Patches appearing right after a particular week of weather tell you your local trigger, which is usually the first stretch of nights above about 70F (21C) with high humidity.

Note also the date and severity of your annual thin alongside the rot record. Once you can see that the year you thinned hard in early autumn was the year you lost nothing the following summer, the job stops feeling optional.
