The vine is the main hazard
In much of North America akebia is naturalised and treated as an invasive species, particularly through the mid-Atlantic and southeastern states, where it forms dense ground mats that smother woodland seedlings and wildflowers and climbs into the canopy of young trees. Some jurisdictions restrict its sale. Before treating a problem vine as a garden nuisance, check whether it is regulated where you are, because that changes how carefully you need to contain it.
It escapes by two routes, and both are easy to interrupt if you look for them. The first is layering: any stem lying on soil roots at the nodes, and once rooted it becomes an independent plant that will run further the next year. The second is seed, from pods that split, drop and are moved by birds and mammals.
Neither route needs chemicals to control. Twice a summer, walk the whole perimeter of the vine and lift every stem that is touching the ground. Anything that has rooted, cut free at the support and dig the rooted portion out with the fingers of root attached; a snapped-off rooted node regrows. In autumn, pick the fruit rather than letting it open on the vine, and pull any seedlings you find in the mulch while they are small enough to come away whole.

The small handful of actual pests
Akebia has very few insect problems and almost no serious diseases, which is one of the reasons it is so vigorous outside its native range. What you may see is minor and usually needs no intervention beyond a hose or a fingernail.
Aphids cluster on the soft tips of new spring growth, especially on a vine growing fast in rich ground. A strong jet of water two or three days running is normally the whole treatment, and the natural predators arrive within a week or two. Scale insects occasionally appear as small brown or gray bumps on older woody stems in shaded, congested parts of the vine; scrape them off and thin the growth so light and air get in, which is a better long-term answer than repeated spraying.
Caterpillars chew ragged holes in the leaves in early summer in some regions. On a plant that produces this much foliage the damage is cosmetic and worth ignoring. Snails and slugs will rasp on young shoots at ground level on a newly planted vine; protect it for its first season only.
Leaf spots show up as small dark blotches in humid summers, mostly on the interior leaves of a dense vine. Thin the growth in winter, clear fallen leaves, and it stops being noticeable.
Problems with the crop rather than the plant
The single most common complaint about akebia is a vine that flowers heavily and produces nothing. That is not a pest, a disease or a nutrient problem; it is the plant's self-incompatibility. A vine cannot fertilize itself, and neither can a second plant that is a clone of it. Adding a genuinely different plant and hand pollinating between the two is the only fix, and it is a complete one.
The next most common is fruit that sets and then drops in early summer. Some drop after a heavy hand-pollinated set is normal and healthy. Widespread drop is usually water stress in a dry spell on a young vine, or a very heavy load on a plant with too little leaf area after over-enthusiastic summer cutting.
Ripe split pods attract wasps, ants and birds, all of which will hollow out the pulp within a day or two of the pod opening. This is not preventable in any practical way and it is not a pest problem: it is the plant's dispersal strategy working correctly. The answer is simply to check the vine daily once the first pod splits.
Late frost on open flowers in a cold spring will destroy that season's crop outright. There is nothing to do about it on a vine of this size, but recognizing it saves you from hunting for a cause that is not there.
Keep a short annual log of what appeared and when: first aphids, first leaf spot, any frost that caught the flowers, and every place you found a rooted layer or a seedling. The layering and seedling entries are the important ones, because they map exactly where the vine tries to escape in your garden, and that map does not change much from year to year.
