Where an apricot carries its fruit
An apricot fruits in two places: on short spurs on wood that is two years old and older, and on shoots that grew last summer. That mix matters, because it means you cannot prune an apricot like an apple, where the spur system is everything, nor like a peach, where only last year's wood counts.
In practice you are keeping a permanent framework of branches carrying productive spurs, while renewing a proportion of the young wood each year so the spur system does not get old, congested and shaded. Spurs go unproductive after about four or five years, and a tree that has never had any wood removed slowly fills with them and stops cropping while looking perfectly healthy.
The practical rule is to take out a little each year rather than a lot occasionally. An apricot resents heavy cutting, responds to it with a mass of water shoots, and every large wound is a canker risk. Small annual cuts on a tree in full growth are what keeps it productive.
Never cut an apricot in winter
This is the single rule that separates apricots from most other fruit trees in the garden, and it is not a matter of preference. Silver leaf spores are released mainly in autumn and winter and enter through fresh wounds. Bacterial canker is likewise most active in cool wet weather and colonises cuts made when the tree is dormant. A dormant apricot has no sap flow to seal a wound, so a winter cut is an open door for months.
Cut instead when the tree is in active growth and the sap is moving, which means from late spring, once the leaves are fully out, through to late summer. Wounds made then close within weeks. Choose a dry settled spell rather than a wet one, and if rain is forecast within a day or two, wait.

The two summer cuts
In an established year you go over the tree twice: once in late spring when the leaves are fully out and you can see the whole shape, and again straight after harvest when you renew wood and shorten what has grown. Neither pass should take out more than about a fifth of the canopy.
- First pass: dead, damaged, crossing, inward In late spring, take out anything dead or visibly cankered first, cutting back into clean wood. Then remove branches that cross and rub, and any growing back into the center of the tree. Aim for an open middle that light and air move through.
- Cut back to a bud or a branch, never to a stub Finish every cut just above an outward-facing bud or flush with the collar of a larger branch. A stub cannot heal, dies back, and becomes the entry point you were trying to avoid.
- Second pass: shorten the side shoots Straight after harvest, shorten this summer's side shoots to about six leaves from the base. This encourages fruit buds to form near the framework instead of at the far end of long whippy growth.
- Renew a share of the old wood Each year take out one or two of the oldest, most congested spur-covered branches entirely, cutting back to a strong younger shoot near the base. That younger shoot becomes the replacement, and the tree stays productive rather than slowly ageing.
- Rub out water shoots while they are soft Vertical shoots that appear on the upper side of branches can be rubbed off with a thumb while they are still green and a few inches long. Left until they are woody, they need a saw cut and another wound.
Sterilize your blades before you start and again between trees. Wipe them with alcohol or a garden disinfectant. Canker and silver leaf both travel on tools, and a single infected tree in the garden can be spread to the rest in one afternoon of tidying.
What not to cut
Do not shorten every shoot on the tree in the name of tidiness. Much of next year's crop is on wood that grew this summer, and a tree given an all-over haircut loses that crop entirely. Shorten side shoots and leave the leaders and the well-placed young wood alone.
Do not remove large limbs unless you have no choice. Any cut over about two inches (5 cm) across on an apricot is a real infection risk, and two or three of them in one season on the same tree is how a healthy apricot starts dying back. If a big limb genuinely has to go, take it in the warmest driest part of summer and take only one.
Do not paint wounds with sealant. Sealants trap moisture against the cut and the wood underneath rots quietly out of sight. A clean cut made in warm weather on a tree in growth heals itself, which is precisely why the timing rule exists.
Renovating a tree that has been left alone
A neglected apricot is usually tall, crowded in the center, bare on the inside, and carrying a small amount of poor fruit at the ends of the branches. The instinct is to cut it hard back and start again. On an apricot that instinct kills trees, because the wounds are large and the response is a thicket of water shoots.
Spread the work over three summers instead. In the first summer take out only dead and cankered wood and open a window into the center by removing one or two crowded branches. In the second, take out one more old branch and start shortening the side shoots. In the third, bring the height down by cutting the tallest leaders back to a strong lower side branch.
Through all of it, keep every cut in the growing season, keep the number of large wounds to one or two a year, and rub out the water shoots that follow while they are still soft. A tree renovated slowly comes back into proper cropping in about four years. A tree renovated in one winter afternoon frequently does not come back at all.
