The two hazards to state plainly
Coral ardisia is an invasive weed across much of the southeastern United States. It has naturalized through Florida, southern Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana and eastern Texas, where it forms solid evergreen understory carpets in hardwood hammocks and riverine woodland and suppresses native ground flora. Florida lists it as a Category I invasive and several states restrict its sale. If you garden anywhere near that range, the responsible options are to grow it in a container with the berries stripped, or not to grow it at all.
The berries are toxic if eaten in quantity. They contain saponins and related compounds, and cattle poisoning has been documented in Florida pastures where the shrub has invaded, with reports of illness in dogs and in children who have eaten the fruit. The berries are scarlet, glossy, produced in abundance and held at exactly the height a toddler or a dog encounters them. Do not plant this shrub in a garden used by small children or grazing animals, and if it is already there, strip the fruit.
Neither of these is a reason to panic about a plant already in a pot on a shaded terrace in a cold-winter climate. They are reasons to make two decisions deliberately: where the plant lives, and what happens to the berries every year. Everything else on this page is ordinary shrub trouble.
If a child or an animal has eaten the berries, contact a poison control center or a veterinarian immediately and take a sample of the fruit and foliage with you. Do not wait for symptoms to develop before making the call.
Scale insects, the commonest pest by a distance
Soft scale and armored scale are what you will find on an unhappy ardisia, particularly on plants brought indoors for winter or grown in still air. They appear as small brown, tan or white bumps clamped to the leaf undersides, along the midrib and tucked into the leaf axils. They do not move, which is why people mistake them for part of the plant.
The first sign is usually not the insect but the mess. Soft scale excretes honeydew, so the leaves below the infestation turn sticky, then a black sooty mold grows on the sugar and the plant looks dirty. Ants running up and down the stems are another reliable tell; they farm the scale for the honeydew and will actively defend it. Heavy infestations cause yellowing, leaf drop and stunted growth.
Deal with it in stages. Wipe the visible scale off by hand with a cloth or a cotton bud dipped in rubbing alcohol, which kills the adults under the shell. Follow up with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap applied to thorough coverage of the leaf undersides, repeating every seven to fourteen days for at least three applications, because the mobile crawler stage keeps hatching after the adults are dead. Wash the sooty mold off with soapy water once the insects are gone.
Mealybugs behave similarly and respond to the same treatment. They look like small white cottony blobs in leaf axils and where the leaves meet the stem, and they hide in the top of the root ball too, so check there on any plant that keeps reinfesting after apparently successful treatment.

Root rot, and telling it from drought
Root rot kills more container ardisias than every insect combined, and it comes from the same two causes every time: a mix that holds too much water, and watering on a schedule instead of by the soil. The organisms involved are common in any soil and only become a problem when the roots are sitting in airless wet conditions.
The confusing part is that an ardisia dying of root rot looks thirsty. The leaves droop and dull because the rotted roots can no longer take up water, and the natural response is to water more, which finishes the job. Break the loop by checking the soil rather than the leaves: if the plant looks thirsty and the mix two inches (5 cm) down is wet, the problem is the roots, not the water supply.
In a container, unpot the plant and look. Healthy ardisia roots are firm and pale; rotted ones are brown or black, slimy and pull apart between your fingers. Cut everything soft away with clean snips, repot into fresh free-draining mix in a pot no bigger than the remaining root system needs, water once and then leave it dry until growth resumes. In open ground, the fix is drainage: lift and replant on a slight mound, or move the plant altogether.
Prevention costs nothing. A quarter of bark or perlite in the mix, a pot with genuine drainage holes, no saucer left standing full of water, and the two-inch finger test before every watering.
Controlling escape and unwanted seedlings
Managing spread is a routine job, not a crisis, provided you do it. Strip the berry clusters every year before the fruit softens and bag the fruit for household waste rather than the compost pile, where the seed survives. That single habit removes almost all the risk from a garden plant.
Then check under and around the plant twice a year. Seedlings appear as small rosettes of glossy dark leaves, usually in a dense ring within a few feet of the parent and scattered wherever birds perch. They pull out cleanly when the ground is damp and the seedling is under a foot (30 cm) tall. Wait longer and they develop a stubborn taproot that snaps and resprouts.
For an established patch that is already out of hand, hand-pulling still works but you have to persist. The seed bank in the soil keeps germinating for several years after the parent plants are gone, so plan on going back over the same ground each season until nothing new appears. Cutting a mature plant down without removing the roots simply produces a resprout, so dig out the crown.
Keep a short log: the date you stripped the berries, and roughly how many seedlings you pulled and where. If the count is rising year on year, or seedlings are turning up well away from the parent, the plant has found a bird route out of your garden and it is time to remove it entirely.
