Chinese Arrowhead Pests and Problems in a Flooded Bed

Arrowhead trouble comes from three places: sap-feeders and caterpillars on the leaves, sour mud below the water, and heat or level swings. Sprays are useless over standing water, so early hand control matters.

Why a flooded bed changes how you treat problems

A bed of standing water is a small closed pond, and that changes your options completely. Anything you spray onto the leaves drips into the water and stays there, because there is no drainage to carry it away and no soil biology to break it down quickly. Soil drenches are worse still: they dissolve straight into the open water at full strength. Assume that chemical control is not available to you and that your tools are inspection, fingers, a jet of water and, where you have one, the wildlife that lives in the bed.

The upside is that a flooded bed suppresses most soil-borne trouble on its own. The pests that damage brassicas and root crops in ordinary beds cannot live in waterlogged mud, and there is no slug damage at the crown because slugs will not cross open water. What is left is a short and predictable list, and it is nearly all above the waterline where you can see it.

Get into the habit of turning two or three leaves over every time you top up. Sap-feeders and young caterpillars sit on the undersides, and at that stage you can deal with a whole outbreak by hand in a minute. Once they are visible from a standing position it is a much longer job.

What actually turns up on the leaves

Aphids are the most common visitor, arriving in late spring and clustering on the newest arrow leaves and on the flower stalks. They are usually dark and they build up quickly on a bed in full sun. Caterpillars are next: several moths lay on waterside plants, and some of them cut an oval piece out of a floating leaf and use it as a case, so a leaf with neat oval holes and a small brown package stuck to it is caterpillar work, not disease. Water snails graze the softer floating leaves and rasp long transparent windows in them, which looks alarming and rarely matters.

Sour mud and rot below the waterline

The problem that quietly costs the most crop is not a pest at all. Waterlogged soil with too much organic matter in it goes anaerobic and turns sour, and sour mud stops the runners dead. The signs are a smell of rotten eggs when you push a hand in, an oily rainbow film on the surface, bubbles rising from the mud, and black soil rather than gray or brown. The plant above may still look reasonable for weeks, which is why this gets missed until harvest.

The usual causes are compost, bark or peat mixed into the soil, fertilizer scattered on the surface, and dead leaves left lying on the mud all season. Fix it by flushing the bed, letting clean water overflow slowly for several minutes, then stopping all feeding for a month and lifting out any leaf litter. Next season, build the bed from plain mineral soil with no organic amendment at all.

Tuber rot in storage traces back to the same place. Tubers lifted from sour mud, or lifted while the bed is still warm and the tops are still green, go soft in store within weeks. So does any tuber with a broken skin, because arrowhead skin is thin and does not heal well once the tuber is out of the mud.

Rust-colored or brown blotching on older leaves late in the season is normal senescence and needs nothing done. Brown scorched leaf margins in midsummer usually mean feed placed too shallow, and yellow leaves all over a plant in early summer usually mean the bed ran short of water at some point, not disease.

If the bed smells sour, do not drain it to fix it. Draining exposes the mud to air, sets the surface hard and finishes off the runners. Overflow it with clean water instead.

Heat, cold and the mistakes that look like disease

In a heatwave a shallow bed cooks. Water only two inches (5 cm) deep over dark mud in full sun can climb well past 95F (35C) by afternoon, and at that point the leaves flag, the edges brown and the runners stop. The fix is depth: carry six inches (15 cm) or more of water through hot weeks, and top up in the morning rather than the evening. A cold snap in late spring does the opposite, checking a young plant so that it sits still for a fortnight, which people often read as a pest problem when nothing is there.

Level swings do damage that shows up later. A bed allowed to drop until the mud is exposed, even for one day, loses its fine feeding roots and leaves a dried, cracked rim that keeps letting air into the soil afterwards. The leaves take a week or more to show it, so the cause and the symptom rarely get connected.

The last hazard is the plant itself. Any tuber that leaves the bed becomes a colony, and a bed that overflows into a pond, ditch or wet ground has effectively planted a permanent stand of arrowhead there. Keep the rim clear of the surrounding soil, never sink the container into wet ground, and push escaping runners back into the mud whenever you find one climbing the wall.

Keep a note of the date each problem first appeared, which plants it started on and what you did about it. Aphids and caterpillars arrive at close to the same point in the season every year, and a record of the first sighting date is what lets you start looking a week before it happens next season rather than a fortnight after.
