Black leaves: sun, wind, or neither
The complaint that brings people to this plant more than any other is blackening leaves. Dark brown to black patches appear along the margins and in irregular blotches across the blade, sometimes ringed with a yellow halo, and they do not go away. It looks like a disease and is almost never one. It is tissue that has died from water loss the roots could not make good.
There are two versions and the timing tells them apart. Sun scorch appears in or after hot bright weather and is concentrated on the side of the plant facing the light and on the uppermost, most exposed leaves. Winter wind burn appears after a cold windy spell and is concentrated on the windward side, often on leaves that looked perfect a week earlier. In both cases the leaf froze or cooked at the surface while the roots could not resupply it, and in both cases the damage is permanent on that leaf.
The fix is never a spray. For sun, screen the plant or move it in autumn or spring to a shadier position; a plant moved out of sun stops accumulating new damage immediately, though the old leaves stay marked for two years, which is a good argument for cutting them off or renovating the plant hard in spring. For wind, a mesh windbreak on stakes along the prevailing side does more good than any wrapping of the plant itself.
A third, less common cause is worth ruling out: roots standing in waterlogged ground produce yellowing and dropping of the lower leaves rather than margin blackening, and a plant that has dried out completely browns evenly rather than in blotches. If the pattern does not match either scorch description, dig a small hole beside the plant after rain and look at what the soil is doing.
Scale insects, sticky leaves and sooty mold
Scale is the one pest that seriously bothers aucuba. The first sign is usually not the insect but a shine: leaves feel tacky, paving or plants underneath develop a varnished film, and after some weeks a black sooty coating appears on the upper leaf surfaces. The film is honeydew, the sugary waste of sap-feeding insects above, and the black is a mold growing on it. The mold does no direct damage but blocks light and destroys the gloss.
Turn a leaf over and look along the raised veins, especially where they branch near the stalk. Scale sit as small oval or circular bumps, tan to dark brown, two to four millimeters across, in loose rows following the veins. They do not read as insects at all; most people take them for scabs or dried sap and only realize when one lifts off to reveal soft tissue underneath. They also colonise leaf stalks and the shaded inner stems, which are exactly the parts nobody inspects, so a colony can build for two seasons before the honeydew gives it away.
- Inspect the leaf undersides in early spring Before growth starts, go over the plant leaf by leaf, turning each one and running your eye along the veins. Check the stalks and the inner stems too. This one inspection decides how much work the rest of the year will be.
- Wipe the adults off by hand A cloth or soft brush dipped in soapy water removes adult scale directly. Support each leaf from below and wipe along the veins. On a plant with a dozen affected leaves this is a fifteen-minute job and often the only control needed.
- Cut out the worst leaves instead of treating them A leaf carrying dozens of scale is not worth saving. Cut its stalk close to the stem with pruners and bin it. Removing three or four heavily infested leaves takes out more of the population than an hour of wiping.
- Treat the crawler stage in late spring The newly hatched young are mobile and unprotected for a few weeks in late spring to early summer. Two applications of insecticidal soap or horticultural oil, ten to fourteen days apart, directed at the leaf undersides and stems, catch them before they form shells.
- Open up the center of the plant Scale thrives in still shaded air inside a congested shrub. Removing one or two of the oldest stems at ground level in spring gets light and movement into the middle and does more for long-term control than repeated spraying.
- Wash off the honeydew and re-inspect in late summer Sponge the upper leaf surfaces with plain water once the insects are gone; sooty mold will not brush off dry but lifts easily when the honeydew beneath it dissolves. A second inspection at the end of summer stops survivors overwintering on the inner stems.
No berries: the question that is not a problem
A healthy aucuba that flowers every spring and never sets a single berry is the most frequently reported fault with this shrub, and it is not a fault at all. Male and female flowers are carried on separate plants. A male plant will never produce berries under any conditions. A female plant will only produce them if pollen from a male reaches its flowers, which means a male within roughly fifty feet (15 m), closer in a sheltered garden.
Check the flowers in spring before treating this as a health problem. Male heads are larger, more branched and visibly full of stamens carrying pale pollen. Female heads are shorter and sparser, each flower with a small green ovary at the center. If you have a male, no amount of feeding, pruning or watering will change the outcome, and the answer is to plant a female nearby, or accept the plant as foliage.
If you have a female and no berries, the missing ingredient is a male. If you have a female, a male and still no berries, look at three things: the age of the plants, since aucuba often takes three or four years to flower at all; the weather at flowering, since a very wet or very cold flowering period cuts pollination; and whether a bird has cleared the crop, which happens quietly and is easy to miss late in the winter.
A last note on the berries themselves: they are mildly toxic to people and pets, causing stomach upset if eaten. Worth knowing and worth sweeping up where small children play, but not a reason to avoid a plant that has been a standard town shrub for well over a century.

Aucuba is not seriously troubled by disease. Occasional leaf spotting after a wet season is cosmetic; remove the worst leaves, thin the plant to improve air movement, and leave it at that.
