Bean weevil is the problem that destroys the crop after harvest
The most damaging pest of adzuki does its work where you cannot see it. Bruchid beetles, usually called bean weevils, lay eggs on pods still growing in the garden. The larvae bore into individual beans and develop inside them, so a harvested bean looks perfect while being hollowed out from within. Small round exit holes appear in stored beans weeks or months later, and once adults are emerging inside a sealed jar they lay again on the beans around them and the population multiplies until the jar holds shells and powder.
There is no useful spray and no way to sort infested beans out by eye at harvest. The answer is a routine treatment of every batch before it is stored, applied whether or not you have seen a problem. Freeze the clean, fully dry beans sealed at 0F (minus 18C) for a full week, or hold them one layer deep at about 140F (60C) for two hours if you will only ever eat them. Freezing preserves germination; heating does not, so any seed you intend to sow must be frozen rather than heated.
Reduce the pressure in the garden as well. Clear and destroy old pods and debris at the end of the season, since that is where the next generation overwinters. Never mix a new batch into an old jar, and wash and dry any jar that previously held infested beans.

Wet weather at ripening, and a crowded canopy
The failure that costs most gardeners the largest share of an adzuki crop is not an insect. It is a wet spell during the weeks when pods should be drying on the plant. Pods blacken, seed inside softens and molds, and in bad cases it sprouts inside the pod. Once that has happened neither the beans nor the seed are worth keeping, and the crop cannot be recovered.
Two things make it worse. The first is a dense canopy: plants sown too close, or overfed into a mass of leaf, hold moisture around the lowest pods for days after rain. Spacing at three to four inches (8 to 10 cm) in rows 18 to 24 inches (45 to 60 cm) apart, with no added nitrogen, keeps air moving through the bed. The second is a late sowing, which pushes the ripening stage into cooler, damper autumn weather with less drying power.
The defense during the season is decisiveness. Watch the forecast once pods start turning. If a run of wet weather is coming and roughly three quarters of your pods are tan, pull the plants and finish drying them under cover. An early harvest with a few green pods still attached is a far better outcome than a perfectly ripe crop rained on for a week. Also stop all watering as soon as the first pods color, and never water overhead once the canopy has closed.
- Space and feed for airflow, not for size Three to four inches (8 to 10 cm) in the row, 18 to 24 inches (45 to 60 cm) between rows, and no nitrogen. A leafy jungle is the ideal environment for pod rot and mildew.

- Check pods every three or four days once they turn You are looking for split pods, borer holes and any blackening. Regular passes catch problems while they are confined to a few pods on a few plants.
- Pull the crop early if a wet spell is forecast At about three quarters tan, take the whole plant and dry it under cover. Losing the last green pods costs far less than losing the ripe ones to mold.
- Clear all debris at the end of the season Old pods and stems left in the bed shelter overwintering weevils and carry leaf disease into next year. Remove and destroy them rather than composting for that bed.

Insects during the flowering weeks
Adzuki spends most of its life untroubled by insects and then attracts attention all at once when it flowers and sets pods in late summer. That is the window to watch, and outside it you can largely leave the bed alone.
Aphids cluster on the soft shoot tips and along the flower stalks. Heavy numbers check growth and reduce pod set. A hard jet of plain water knocks them off and most do not climb back; repeat every two or three days in the morning while numbers are low. Ladybird and hoverfly larvae clear a colony within a week if you let them, and a broad-spectrum spray kills those predators faster than it kills the aphids, which is why the problem usually returns worse after spraying.
Pod borers are the more serious garden pest. Moths lay on the pods during the flowering weeks and the caterpillars bore in and eat the developing seed, leaving a small entry hole and a scatter of frass. There is no treatment once they are inside. Pick off and destroy any pod showing a hole every time you walk the rows. Stink bugs feeding through the pod wall cause a subtler version of the same damage, showing up as dimpled or shriveled beans at threshing; hand picking at dusk and keeping the surrounding weeds down is the practical response.
A huge plant with almost no pods, and what to record
The complaint that comes up most often with adzuki is a bed of magnificent, waist-high, dark green plants carrying almost nothing. This is not a pest and not a disease. It is a short-day plant that has been given nitrogen and a very early sowing date. Because flowering is triggered by lengthening nights rather than by the size of the plant, all that extra growth happens before the plant is allowed to flower at all, and a heavy leaf canopy then shades and delays the few flowers that do appear.
The fix is entirely in next year's sowing: no nitrogen, an unenriched free-draining bed, and a later sowing date once the soil is above 60F (15C). A shorter, harder plant flowers at the same time and carries more pods you can reach and pick. If a plant has already run leafy, pinching out the growing tips once flowering has started encourages side branching and lets a little more light in, but it will not rescue the season.
A related complaint is flowers that open and drop without setting pods. That is almost always drought or heat stress during the flowering weeks, sometimes combined with a heavy aphid population on the flower stalks. Soak the bed thoroughly once a week from first flower until the pods have filled, and wash the aphids off with water.
Record the date you first see each problem and what the weather had been doing that week, along with which part of the bed was affected. Damp corners repeat themselves year after year. Note whether you treated the stored beans for weevil and by which method, because a jar that goes bad six months after harvest is otherwise impossible to explain.
