One main window, and three cuts you can make any time
There is one dependable pruning window on a bergamot and it is narrow. Prune at the end of winter or the very start of spring, after the crop is off and before the first flush of new growth breaks, when the tree is coming out of its cool spell but the buds have not yet moved. Cut earlier and you leave wounds open through the coldest, dimmest weeks on a tender species that seals slowly in low temperatures. Cut later and you remove the short previous season growth that is about to carry the flowers, which is a direct subtraction from both the crop and the scent.
The container adds a second consideration that ground grown citrus does not have. This is a tree you carry through a doorway twice a year, so its final dimensions are set by the narrowest point on that route, not by what the plant would like to do. Decide the maximum width and height you can physically move before you make the first cut, and prune to keep it comfortably inside that envelope. A bergamot allowed to reach the point where it will not fit through the door is a bergamot that will meet a frost.
Outside the main window you may still do three things at any time of year, because none of them provokes the flush of soft growth that badly timed cutting does. Remove genuinely dead wood, cutting back to green tissue or the branch collar. Remove a broken branch. And remove suckers from below the graft union, flush at their point of origin. All three are damage control rather than shaping.
Never shear a bergamot to an outline. Cutting every shoot back to the same length produces a dense thorny shell, a dark dead interior and a tree you cannot reach into to pick or inspect. Thin whole branches at their origin instead of shortening many, and stand back frequently.
Work through the tree in a fixed order
A methodical sequence prevents the commonest mistake, which is wandering round the tree taking a little off everywhere until it has been sheared without anyone intending it. Each step below clears wood that makes the next step easier to judge, and by the time you reach thinning you will often find the canopy is already open enough. Sharpen and clean your tools first, because clean cuts at the collar seal in weeks while ragged crushed cuts stay open for a year.
- Dead, broken and damaged wood first Cut back to healthy green tissue or to the branch collar. Dead citrus wood is gray brown, snaps rather than bending and shows no green when you scratch the bark. This step costs nothing and opens the view.
- Suckers below the graft union Cut flush at the origin with no stub left. Rootstock growth is thornier, more upright and larger leaved than the scion, and it will take a potted tree over inside two or three seasons because it is far more vigorous.
- Vertical water shoots through the middle Remove the strong upright shoots rocketing through the center. They carry the longest thorns on the plant, they shade the fruiting wood beneath them and they will not flower usefully for years.
- Crossing and rubbing branches Where two branches touch, take out the weaker or more awkwardly placed one at its origin. Bark rubbed open by a neighbor is the usual entry point for rot in a citrus canopy.
- Clear the trunk to a working height Remove the lowest branches so the canopy starts eight to twelve inches (20 to 30 cm) above the compost. This keeps fruit off the surface, lets you top dress and inspect the trunk, and gives you somewhere to grip the pot.
- Thin for light and stop early Take out a small number of whole branches to open the center, removing no more than a fifth of the living canopy in one year. On a container tree, err lower still; the root volume is limited and heavy pruning is a heavy demand.
Thorns, congestion and the fruit you are protecting
Bergamot carries stiff thorns on vigorous wood, and on a container tree the canopy is small enough that a thorn is rarely far from a swelling fruit. That proximity is a real cause of crop loss. A thorn presses into a fruit as it expands, punctures the rind, and the puncture rots. The remedy is structural rather than reactive: thin the canopy so that every developing fruit hangs in space rather than against a neighboring shoot. When you find a punctured fruit at harvest, note which branch it hung on and take that congestion out the following winter.
Protect yourself as well. Thorn wounds on citrus go septic more readily than people expect because the thorn carries surface debris deep into the tissue. Wear eye protection when working inside a canopy at head height, keep a thick sleeve over the forearm, which matters more than a glove since most thorn injuries land on the arm, and pull cut material out with a long tool rather than reaching in after it. Clean any puncture you do get properly rather than shrugging it off.
Bark that grew up shaded scorches within days if a thinning session suddenly exposes it to full sun, and the strip of cooked bark dies back over the following year. On a small potted tree the simplest answer is to move the pot into partial shade for a couple of weeks after a significant prune, or to turn it so a newly exposed limb faces away from the strongest afternoon sun. On a larger specimen, paint the exposed limb with white water based paint diluted by half.

Root pruning and the repotting cycle
Container trees need attention below the compost as well as above it, and the two jobs belong in the same session. Every two or three years, at the same end of winter moment, slide the tree out and look at the roots. A dense mat spiralling round the outside of the ball means it is time to act. Either move up one pot size, adding about two inches (5 cm) of new mix around the ball, or, if the pot is already as large as you can carry, keep the same container and root prune instead.
Root pruning sounds drastic and is routine. Shave an inch or so (2 to 3 cm) off the sides and base of the root ball with a sharp knife or old saw, tease the remaining outer roots loose, and repot into the same container with fresh mix packed around the reduced ball. Then reduce the canopy by a comparable proportion in the same session, so the leaves the tree has to support match the roots left to supply them. Done together, the tree barely notices; done separately, either half causes a check.
Keep the graft union clear of the surface every time you repot. Compost slumps over two or three years and a tree that was potted correctly can end up with its union at or below compost level, at which point the scion roots over the top and any wound at the union invites the rootstock to break out. Check the height with a cane across the rim as part of the job, not as an afterthought.
Keeping a pruning record
Record the date you pruned, roughly what fraction of the canopy came out, and the final height and width of the tree. Citrus answers a prune a full season later, so next spring's flush of thorny upright shoots is the direct consequence of this year's cuts, and without a note you will treat that regrowth as unprovoked and cut it again, which is how a permanent shear and regrow cycle starts.
Note the repotting and root pruning dates alongside, with the pot size and the height of the graft union above the compost each time. Together with your harvest notes about which branches carried punctured fruit, those lines turn the next winter session from guesswork into a short list of specific cuts you decided on months earlier.
