Why they dry out first
Two features of the root system explain almost every watering problem. The roots are fibrous, fine and concentrated in the top 12 inches (30 cm), so they draw on a very shallow reservoir. And they have no root hairs, relying instead on fungal partners in the soil, which means they extract water less aggressively than most plants and cannot chase moisture down when the surface dries.
The practical consequence is that a blueberry is stressed while the tomatoes next to it still look fine. The bush needs roughly one to two inches (25 to 50 mm) of water a week through the growing season, more while the fruit is swelling, and it wants that as steady moisture rather than as a flood followed by a drought.

Reading the plant instead of the calendar
Fixed watering schedules fail because the weather is not fixed. Push a finger two inches (5 cm) into the soil under the mulch: if it comes out dry, water. That takes five seconds and beats any rule about watering twice a week.
The plant gives you signals too, and drought and waterlogging look confusingly similar because both end with roots that cannot supply the leaves. The way to separate them is to check the soil before you diagnose. Wilting on dry soil is drought. Wilting on wet soil is root damage, and watering more makes it worse.

Once the fruit has started to size up, a week of drought costs you berry size permanently. The berry does not catch up when you resume watering; it simply ripens small.
How to water so it reaches the roots
All five come down to the same idea: deliver water slowly to the soil, keep the surface covered, and make the interval long enough that the roots go looking for moisture rather than sitting in it.
- Water long and less often Aim to wet the top 12 inches (30 cm) each time. A brief sprinkle wets the mulch and evaporates, and it trains roots to stay at the surface where they are most vulnerable.
- Water at the base, not over the top Wetting the foliage and fruit encourages mummy berry and fruit rots. Direct the water at the soil around the plant, out to the edge of the canopy where most of the feeding roots are.
- Early morning is best The leaves dry before evening and less is lost to evaporation than at midday. Evening watering on a cool night leaves the plant damp for hours, which is when the fungal problems start.
- Use drip or a soaker hose if you can A soaker line run under the mulch delivers slowly and evenly, which is exactly what a shallow fibrous root system wants. It is also the cheapest way to be consistent while away.
- Keep the mulch topped up Three inches (8 cm) of bark or pine needles halves the watering you need to do. It breaks down over a year or two, so add to it each spring rather than laying it once and forgetting.
Containers change the arithmetic
A potted blueberry in full summer can need water every single day, and twice on a hot windy one. The compost volume is small, the roots fill it, and peat-based mixes become hydrophobic once they dry, so water runs down the gap at the side of the pot and out of the bottom while the middle stays dry.
The test is weight, not appearance. Lift the pot, or tip it: a pot that feels light is dry however wet the surface looks. When a pot has dried out badly, stand it in a bucket of water for twenty minutes rather than watering from above, which is the only way to rewet the core.

Never leave a blueberry pot standing in a full saucer. The roots suffocate, and in cold weather the water freezes solid and the plant cannot drink even though it is surrounded by ice.
Water quality and what to record
The water itself has to suit an acid-loving plant. Hard tap water raises the pH of a container a little with every application, so rainwater is the default choice and a water butt pays for itself in a season. Where only hard water is available, acidify it to around pH 5 for every second watering and expect to repot more often.
The most useful thing to keep a note of is not how often you watered but the gaps: the date any drought stress showed, the date you last soaked the bed thoroughly, and the week the fruit began to swell. Comparing those next year tells you whether small berries were a watering failure or something else entirely.
