Kindness is what kills the flowering
Almost every bougainvillea that refuses to color up is being looked after too well. It is watered whenever the surface looks dry, it has been potted up into something roomy, and it gets a general feed every couple of weeks. The plant responds exactly as you would expect a vigorous tropical climber to respond: it puts everything into long, thick, viciously thorned green shoots that can add three feet (90 cm) in a season and never carry a scrap of color.
Bougainvillea flowers when it thinks conditions are turning against it. In its native habitat the color comes with the end of the rains, when the soil dries out and growth has to stop. A plant that is never allowed to run short of anything never receives that signal. So the single most useful thing you can do is stop being generous. Let it dry until the leaves droop, keep the roots crowded, and cut the nitrogen.
This feels wrong, and that is why so few people follow through. The plant will look slightly unhappy for a week or two, the youngest leaves will hang, and there is a strong temptation to reach for the watering can. Hold off. Color usually appears four to six weeks after you start the dry treatment, on the tips of shoots that stopped extending. Note too that you are not waiting for petals, which changes what deadheading means here.

The color is bracts, not petals
The magenta, orange or white sheets of color are modified leaves called bracts, arranged in threes. The actual flowers are the small cream tubes sitting in the center of each trio, barely a quarter of an inch (6 mm) across, and most people never notice them. This is not a technicality; it changes how the display behaves and how you treat it.
Because bracts are leaves, they last far longer than petals would. A well-set display holds its color for six to ten weeks, sometimes longer in a dry season, and it fades gradually rather than dropping in a rush. You are not deadheading spent blooms every few days the way you would with a rose. You wait for the whole cluster to go papery and pale, then cut the shoot back behind it.
It also means that leaf conditions affect the display. Anything that makes the plant shed leaves, such as a cold snap, root disturbance or a sudden move indoors, will take the bracts with them. If your plant drops its color within days of being moved, that is what happened, and it is not a disease.
The tiny true flowers do open, and when they do the bracts are at their peak. Once those cream tubes have browned and fallen, the cluster is on its way out and you can start planning the cut.
Bract color deepens in bright light and cool nights. The same plant that reads dull pink in a shaded corner in midsummer can turn intense magenta in autumn sun. If the color looks washed out, look at the light before you blame the plant.
How to run the dry cycle
The technique is deliberate drought, repeated. It is not neglect, and it is not a permanent state. You are pushing the plant to the edge, letting it register the stress, and then relieving it just enough to keep the leaves on.
This works far better in a container than in open ground, because you control the whole root zone. A plant in the ground with its roots into a lawn irrigation line will never dry out enough to respond, which is one reason bougainvillea is so often grown in pots even in climates where it is hardy.
- Water deeply, once Soak the pot until water runs from the base, then tip away anything in the saucer. This is the last water for a while, so make it a proper one that wets the whole root ball rather than a splash on the surface.
- Wait for the leaves to droop Do nothing until the soft new leaves at the shoot tips visibly hang. In summer sun this takes four to eight days in a ten inch (25 cm) pot. The older, leathery leaves will still look fine, so judge by the youngest ones only.
- Wait one more day Once drooping starts, leave it a further twenty-four hours. This is the part people skip. The stress signal needs to be unmistakable, and a plant that is rescued the moment it sulks learns nothing.
- Rewater and repeat Soak it again, exactly as before. Run this cycle continuously through the warm months. After three or four rounds you should see bract clusters forming at the tips of shoots that have stopped extending.
- Ease off once color sets When bracts are coloring, water a little sooner, before the drooping stage. You want to hold the display rather than push the plant further. Return to the hard cycle after you cut the faded clusters off.
Feed for flower, not for growth
Nitrogen is the enemy here. Any general-purpose fertilizer, lawn feed drifting into a nearby bed, or fresh rich compost will push the plant straight back into thorny green extension. If your bougainvillea started flowering well and then went green and blank after a repot, the new compost is almost certainly why.
Use a high-potassium liquid feed, the sort sold for tomatoes or for flowering container plants, at half the strength on the label and no more than every third watering through the growing season. Potassium supports bract formation without driving shoot growth. Some growers add a magnesium supplement if the older leaves yellow between the veins while the veins stay green.
Stop feeding entirely for at least six weeks if the plant is running to leaf. Bougainvillea will not starve in that time; it holds substantial reserves in its woody stems and will simply stop extending, which is exactly what you want.
Stop feeding altogether as the season cools. A plant carrying soft, well-fed growth into cold weather loses it, and that soft growth is the tissue most likely to rot at the base.

What to write down this season
The dry cycle only becomes reliable when you know your own pot, your own compost and your own summer. That takes one season of notes and then it is yours for good.
Record how many days pass between a deep soak and the first droop, and note the pot size and where it stands. That single number is the whole schedule; next year you water by the calendar you built rather than by guesswork. Log the date you began withholding water and the date the first bract color appeared, so you learn your own lead time and can aim a display at a particular part of the season.
Note the date you cut back each faded flush and whether a second flush followed, and how long it took. Most established plants give two or three flushes a year once the cycle is running. Finally, write down every feed you give with its type, because a green season almost always traces back to a feed you have forgotten about.
