The whole cycle in one view
Broccoli sprouts have no season. The cycle is short enough that the only variable worth tracking is room temperature, and it runs identically in midwinter and midsummer as long as the kitchen sits in the right range. That makes it one of the few things you can grow to a genuine schedule.
The shape is always the same: an evening soak, two or three days of roots, a day of cotyledons opening and greening, and a harvest. Everything else is the twice-daily rinse. The table below is the version to keep in your head.

Staggering so there is always a jar ready
One jar gives you four or five days of sprouts and then a four-day gap. Two jars started three days apart give you a continuous supply, and the daily work does not double because you are rinsing both at the same sink at the same moment.
Start the second jar on the day the first one goes into its greening phase. By the time the first batch is eaten, the second is coming out of the jar. A third jar is worth it only if you are eating sprouts every day in quantity.
Match the batch size to what you actually eat. The temptation is to make a big jar because the effort is the same, but broccoli sprouts do not keep, and a half-eaten container going slimy in the fridge is a worse outcome than a smaller jar finished cleanly.
- Fix a soak evening Pick one evening a week as the anchor and start every batch from it. Soaking is the only step that has to happen at a particular time of day, so tie it to something you already do.
- Start the next jar on greening day When you move a batch into brighter light on day four, soak the next lot of seed that same evening. The two batches never collide and you never have a gap.
- Rinse both jars together Line them up at the sink morning and evening. Two jars take barely longer than one, and doing them together means you never forget the older jar.
- Clear the vessel immediately after harvest Wash the jar and mesh in hot soapy water the moment it is empty, not when you next need it. A jar left with residue in the threads is the start of the next failed batch.
What to write down
Sprouting is repetitive enough that a few notes turn it from guesswork into a reliable routine within a month. Record the date you started each soak, the seed lot, the seed rate, and the room temperature on the counter where the jar stands. Then record the day you harvested and one line on how the batch went.
The pattern that emerges is worth more than any general advice. You will find that your kitchen at its winter temperature gives you day six harvests and your summer kitchen gives day four, and you can plan around that instead of checking the jar hopefully every morning. You will also find out quickly whether a particular seed lot germinates evenly, because the note about hard seed at the bottom will either recur or it will not.
Note the failures in more detail than the successes. Which day the smell appeared, what the drainage angle was, whether the mat had been broken up, how warm the room had been. Three such entries almost always point at one repeated habit, and fixing that one habit fixes sprouting for good.
Keep the seed bag with the lot number until the batch grown from it has been eaten. If a batch is bad, you want to be able to tell whether it was that lot or your handling, and you cannot do that from memory.
One more thing worth logging: the yield. A tablespoon of seed should give you four to five cups of sprouts. A batch that comes in well under that had poor germination, and knowing the number tells you it was the seed rather than the routine.
Adjusting the schedule to your kitchen
The day counts above assume a room at 65 to 72F (18 to 22C). Move away from that range and the whole timeline shifts, so it is worth working out your own version once rather than being surprised by it every time the weather changes.
In a warm kitchen, everything happens sooner and the margin for error shrinks. Shorten the soak to five or six hours, rinse three times a day, halve the seed rate so the mass stays open, and expect to harvest on day three or four. If the counter is above 80F (27C) it is genuinely better to wait for cooler weather than to fight it.
In a cold kitchen the batch stretches out and needs almost nothing from you except patience and a lamp for the greening days. Two rinses a day remain correct. Do not try to speed things up with warm rinse water, which raises the temperature of the mass briefly and then lets it fall again, which is the worst of both.
