Frost ends it, at any stage
Buckwheat has no frost tolerance whatsoever. A light frost at around 30F (minus 1C) blackens the foliage, and anything colder kills the plant outright within a day. This is true of a seedling, a plant in full flower and a plant carrying nearly ripe seed alike. There is no hardening off, no recovery and no partial survival.
In practice this is as much a feature as a hazard, and it is why buckwheat is such a comfortable cover crop. A stand sown late in the season will be killed cleanly by the first frost and left as a flat mulch on the surface, with no risk at all of it surviving to become a weed the way an overwintering rye or vetch would. If you want a winter-killed mulch rather than a crop to cut, sowing deliberately late is a valid strategy.
As a hazard it only bites in two places. A spring sowing made before the last frost date is simply lost, which is why the sowing rule is to wait for warm soil rather than to gamble. And a seed crop that runs late will be killed before it finishes ripening. If frost is forecast and your seed is anywhere near three quarters brown, cut the block that day and finish it under cover, because the plant will not give you another week.

Volunteers are the hazard people underestimate
Buckwheat sheds seed readily, the seed survives in soil for more than one season, and it germinates fast in warm ground. A crop that is allowed to ripen fully and shed will come back as a dense stand of volunteers in the following crop and again the year after. In a small garden that is a genuine nuisance, and it is the single most common complaint from people who grew buckwheat once and will not grow it again.
The prevention is entirely in the timing of the cut. For a green manure crop, cut within about a week to ten days of the first flowers opening. At that point almost no seed is mature enough to be viable, and you get the full soil benefit with no reseeding at all. Waiting three weeks past first flower because the bees are enjoying it is a defensible choice, but be clear that you are trading it against volunteers.
If the crop has already set seed, you have two reasonable options. Let the first frost kill it and hoe the volunteers as they appear next season, which is easy work because the seedlings are large, shallow and pull cleanly. Or cut and remove the whole top growth to a hot compost pile rather than leaving it on the bed. What you should not do is rotavate a seeding stand into the soil, which buries seed at exactly the depth from which it will emerge happily for the next two years.
- Decide the cutting date at first flower, not later Mark the date the first flowers open. Cutting within a week to ten days of that gives soil benefit with essentially no viable seed shed.
- Cut, do not rotavate, a stand that has set seed Burying mature seed at an inch or two (2.5 to 5 cm) is ideal sowing depth. Cutting and removing the top growth is far better if seed has already hardened.

- Keep a note of which beds carried buckwheat Volunteers arrive the following season and sometimes the one after. Knowing which bed to check in early summer saves a lot of hand weeding.
- Compost seeding top growth hot, or not at all A cool garden heap will not kill buckwheat seed, and spreading that compost distributes the problem across the whole garden.
Why the pest list is so short
Buckwheat has few serious pests and almost no diseases of consequence in a home garden. It is in the knotweed family rather than with the grasses or the brassicas, so it shares no pests with most of what surrounds it in a vegetable garden, and it is in the ground for such a short time that slow-building problems never get established. This genuine freedom from trouble is a large part of why it works as a break crop.
What does turn up is minor. Aphids cluster on soft shoot tips and are almost always cleared by the hoverfly and ladybird larvae that the flowers themselves attract. Japanese beetles are drawn to the flowers where they occur, which cuts both ways: some gardeners deliberately avoid buckwheat near vulnerable crops for that reason, while others use it as a trap planting. Wireworms and slugs take a few seedlings on freshly turned ground. None of these justifies spraying, and spraying a block in full flower kills exactly the pollinators and predators you grew it for.
The one real disease risk is damping off, and it belongs to the sowing decision rather than to the growing crop. Seed sown into cold wet soil sits for a week or more before germinating and rots or collapses at the soil line. Sowing into soil above 55F (13C) removes the problem entirely, which is one more reason not to sow early.
Do not spray insecticide on flowering buckwheat under any circumstances. The block will be carrying honeybees, bumblebees, hoverflies and parasitic wasps in large numbers, and the pest problem you are treating is almost certainly costing you less than the predators you would kill.
What to record when something goes wrong
Record the date you first see a problem, which part of the block it appeared in, and what the weather had been doing in the week before. With a crop this fast, almost every failure traces back to a single decision or a single weather event, and the date alone usually identifies which one. A thin patchy stand recorded at ten days after sowing points at cold soil or birds; the same complaint recorded at five weeks points at lodging or drought.
Note the bed position every time you grow it, because that is what tells you where to look for volunteers in the following two seasons. Note the date of first flower as well, since it is both the trigger for cutting a green manure crop and the anchor for judging whether hot weather hit the flowering window. Two seasons of those notes will tell you whether your buckwheat should be sown early to flower before the heat, or late to flower after it.
