Most burdock failures are soil failures
Before looking for insects, understand that the majority of disappointing burdock crops are the result of something in the ground rather than something on the plant. Forked, stunted, kinked and hairy roots all trace back to what the root tip met on its way down, and all of them are decided within the first two months.
The frustration is that you cannot see any of it until harvest. A plant with a badly forked root has perfectly normal leaves. This is why the diagnosis has to be done backwards: when you lift the crop, look carefully at the shape of each root and work out what it hit, then fix that before the next sowing.
The good news is that these causes are all under your control and none of them are diseases. A bed prepared properly to two feet, with no fresh manure and no stones, produces straight roots reliably.

Powdery mildew on the leaves
Powdery mildew is the most common leaf disease on burdock and it usually turns up in late summer, as a white dusty film on the upper leaf surface that spreads until whole leaves go gray and dry. It thrives in warm days with cool humid nights and in crowded rows where air does not move.
It matters less than it looks, because by late summer the root has done most of its work, and a burdock plant can lose a fair proportion of its leaves without a serious loss of root size. Do not panic and start spraying a crop that is three weeks from lifting.
It matters more if it arrives early. Remove and bin the worst affected lower leaves to slow it down, improve airflow by thinning any crowded plants, and water at the base rather than over the canopy. Do not compost mildewed leaves in a heap that will not heat up.
Insects worth acting on
Burdock attracts a short list of pests, and the response depends almost entirely on how far into the season you are. Early damage to a small rosette is worth intervening over, because the plant needs its leaves to drive the root down. Late damage rarely justifies much.
Aphids are the main one. They cluster on the undersides of young leaves and on the crown, and a heavy infestation curls and distorts the new growth. They are far worse on plants that have been pushed with nitrogen, which is one more reason not to over-feed. A strong jet of water knocks most of them off, and repeating it every few days breaks the cycle.
Slugs and snails will shred small seedlings overnight, particularly in damp mulched beds, and a burdock station wiped out at the two-leaf stage cannot be replaced by moving a seedling across. Protect the row until the plants have four or five true leaves, after which the coarse leaves stop being attractive to them.

Root rot and waterlogging
Standing water is the one condition burdock genuinely cannot tolerate. A deep root sitting in saturated soil rots from the tip upwards, and you will find out at harvest when the bottom foot comes away black and soft. Beds on heavy clay that puddle after rain are the usual site.
There is no treatment once it has started. The answer is drainage, decided at bed preparation: a raised trench or a mound raises the crown and the upper root above the water table, and coarse organic matter worked deep into the profile improves the way water moves through it.
If a plant collapses suddenly in wet weather with the leaves going limp and yellow from the outside inwards, pull it and check the root. If it is rotting, lift the neighbors to use straight away rather than leaving them to go the same way.
Do not replant burdock or other members of the same family in the same ground for at least three years after a rot or nematode problem, and never sow it directly after grass, where wireworm numbers are high.
Keep a note of what went wrong and where
When you lift the crop, sort the roots into straight and faulty and count them, noting the fault type against the position in the row. Problems in burdock are almost always local to a patch of the bed rather than spread evenly, and a note saying that the forked roots all came from the western third points straight at buried rubble or a compacted path line.
Record the date mildew first appeared and how far through the season that was. If it consistently arrives with three or more weeks of growing left, the row spacing is too tight and it is worth widening the stations next year rather than reaching for a spray.
