The fertilizer rule: none
Bush clover is a legume. Its roots carry nodules of rhizobia bacteria that convert atmospheric nitrogen into a form the plant can use, which is why the genus was planted for soil improvement in the first place. A plant that manufactures its own nitrogen does not want yours. Applying a general garden fertilizer, a lawn feed that drifts into the border, or a mulch of fresh manure will push a flush of soft green growth that flops, shades its own interior and flowers poorly.
This is counterintuitive because a floppy plant looks like a hungry plant. It is not. A bush clover that has collapsed sideways in midsummer is almost always over-fed, over-watered, or planted in too much shade, and the correct response to all three is to withhold rather than to add. If you inherited a plant in rich soil, stop feeding it entirely, stop watering it in normal weather, and give it two seasons to firm up.
The one exception is a plant in a container, where the roots cannot forage and repeated watering leaches out the little the mix holds. A pot-grown bush clover takes a single light application of a low-nitrogen feed, something with a phosphorus and potassium bias, in mid spring as growth resumes. Nothing after midsummer, because late feeding produces soft shoots that will not harden before the first frost.

Watering: the drought-tolerant plant that drowns
Once it has been in the ground two full seasons, bush clover is genuinely drought tolerant. Its root system goes deep, its narrow trifoliate leaflets lose water slowly, and it will sail through weeks of dry summer weather that has other shrubs wilting. In most temperate gardens an established plant never needs a hose again.
Water it anyway in three situations. First, a plant in its first two summers, deeply once a week when there has been no meaningful rain. Second, any plant in a container, which has no reserve at all and can go from fine to crisp in two hot days. Third, an established plant in a genuine drought, meaning six weeks or more with no rain and hard sun, where you would give it one deep soaking rather than a series of light ones.
The failure mode that actually kills bush clover is the opposite. Waterlogged soil, especially cold waterlogged soil in winter, suffocates the roots and lets root rot organisms in. The symptoms are misleading: yellowing lower leaves, thin growth, and shoots that wilt in the middle of a hot day and recover overnight, all of which look like drought and tempt people to water more. If a plant is wilting and the soil at a hand's depth is damp, the problem is the roots, not the water supply. Improve drainage, stop watering, and pull mulch back from the crown.
Support, or the decision to let it arch
Bush clover grows as a fountain. Stems rise from the base, extend four to six feet (1.2 to 1.8 m) through the season, and bend outward under the weight of leaf and flower until the tips nearly touch the ground. That arch is the plant's whole character, and staking it upright into a tight column throws the effect away entirely.
So the choice is where the arch lands, not whether to have one. Give the plant an eight-foot (2.4 m) circle of clear ground and let it fall naturally, and it needs no support at all. In a tighter border, put a ring of hoop stakes or a circle of pea sticks around the crown in mid spring, when the new shoots are about a foot (30 cm) high, so the stems grow up through the support and hide it. Adding support in midsummer after the plant has already fallen is a bundling job that always looks like one.
If a plant flops badly despite good sun, treat it as a diagnosis rather than a staking problem. The usual causes, in order of likelihood, are too much nitrogen, too much shade, too much water, and a hard cut that came too late in spring so the new stems ran up soft and fast. Fix the cause and the plant carries itself the following year.
Never shorten arching stems in summer to tidy a floppy plant. Bush clover flowers along the length of the current year's growth, so a midsummer trim removes the entire display a few weeks before it would have opened.
The year in maintenance
The working calendar is short. One hard cut in late winter or very early spring before growth starts, an optional ring of supports as the shoots rise, a check for self-sown seedlings after flowering, and a decision in fall about whether to remove the seed heads. That is the whole job for an established plant in the ground.
- Late winter, before buds swell Cut the entire plant back hard, to between four and eight inches (10 to 20 cm) above the ground. Remove all of last year's stems. This is the single most important operation of the year and is covered in detail in the pruning guide.
- Mid spring, as shoots reach a foot (30 cm) Set hoop supports or pea sticks if the plant is in a confined position. Refresh mulch to two inches (5 cm), keeping it a hand's width clear of the crown. Do not feed.
- Early summer Watch for aphids on the soft shoot tips and for spider mite stippling if the weather has been hot and dry. Water only new plants and containers. Leave the growing stems entirely alone.
- Late summer into fall, flowering Do nothing but look at it. Bush clover flowers on new wood in late summer and fall, small pea flowers in pink, rose-purple or white strung along the arching stems. Any cutting now costs you flowers.
- After flowering finishes Decide about seed. In any region where the genus is invasive, cut the spent flowering wands off before the pods harden and dispose of them in household waste, not the compost pile.
- Through winter Leave the dead stems standing in cold regions. They trap snow and insulating leaf litter over the crown, which is the part that matters. Cut them off in late winter, not in fall.
Keeping notes that pay off next season
Record the date you made the hard spring cut and the height you cut to, then record the date the first flower opened and how tall the plant finished. Over three seasons this tells you something no general guide can: how your particular plant, in your soil and your climate, converts cut height into final size. If the plant is outgrowing its space, cutting lower or slightly later is the lever, and the notes tell you how much movement to expect.
Note the date you first see aphids or mite stippling each year, and what the weather had been doing for the fortnight before. Both pests are strongly weather-driven, and after two or three years the record tells you which spells of weather to start checking after, rather than discovering the problem when the shoot tips are already distorted.
If you garden where the genus seeds around, keep a count of how many self-sown seedlings you pull each spring and where you found them. A rising count, or seedlings appearing further from the parent each year, is the signal to stop letting the plant set seed at all.
