Bud drop is a summer problem you see in winter
The single most common complaint about camellias is fat buds that swell, sit there for weeks and then fall off without opening, or open into a brown mush. Almost everyone reaches for a spray, or blames the cold. Neither is usually the cause. The buds you are watching now were formed on the plant in the middle of the previous summer, and what happened to the shrub then decides whether they can open.
Flower buds are initiated in early to midsummer, just after the new growth flush hardens off. That is exactly the period when a camellia is most likely to go short of water: the leaves are new, the weather is hot, and the shrub looks perfectly healthy because the thick evergreen leaves hide stress well. A camellia does not wilt dramatically. It simply builds fewer and weaker buds, and those weak buds abort months later when the plant tries to open them.
This lag is what makes camellias frustrating to diagnose. The symptom appears six months after the cause, in a completely different season, and by then nothing you do helps. Once a bud has gone brown and loose at the base it will not recover. The response to bud drop is not a treatment this winter, it is a watering plan for next summer.
Two other causes are worth ruling out. Buds that turn brown from the outside in after a clear cold night are frost damage, and buds shed in quantity by a pot that has never been repotted are a root problem. Everything else traces back to summer water.

Water hardest when the plant looks like it needs it least
The critical watering window runs from the end of the spring growth flush through the whole of summer, and it is the window most people skip because the shrub is not flowering and not obviously doing anything. Aim to keep the root zone evenly moist from the moment the new leaves harden until autumn rain takes over. That is the period the plant is building next year's display.
Water long and infrequently rather than little and often. Camellia roots are fine, fibrous and concentrated in the top twelve inches (30 cm) of soil, so a slow soak that wets that whole layer is what you want, followed by letting the surface dry before the next one. A daily sprinkle keeps roots shallow and makes the plant more vulnerable to the next hot spell.
Rainwater is better than tap water where your supply is hard. Camellias need acid conditions, and years of alkaline tap water will slowly raise the pH around the roots, especially in a container. If you have a water butt, save it for the camellias rather than the vegetables.
Mulch does more for summer water stress than any watering routine. Two to three inches (5 to 8 cm) of composted bark, pine needles or leaf mold over the root zone, kept an inch clear of the trunk, holds moisture and keeps the shallow roots cool. Renew it each spring.
A camellia in the ground rarely needs water in winter, even in a dry spell, because it is barely growing. Watering a cold, wet, dormant root system is a good way to rot it. The exception is a plant in a pot under an overhang, which can stay bone dry for weeks without you noticing.
Feeding: less than you think, and at the right moment
Camellias are not hungry plants. One feed a year is enough for a shrub in reasonable ground, and overfeeding with nitrogen gives you a big glossy plant with disappointing flowering. Use a fertilizer formulated for acid-loving plants, sometimes sold as ericaceous or rhododendron feed, because ordinary general-purpose fertilizers often raise the pH over time.
Feed once as the flowers finish and the new growth is about to start. That single application supports the growth flush and the bud set that follows it, which is the whole of next year's flowering in one go. If you want a second, give it around midsummer, and make it a light one.
Stop feeding after midsummer. Late nitrogen pushes soft growth that will not harden before cold weather, and that soft growth is exactly what gets damaged first. It also diverts the plant into leaves at the moment it should be setting buds.
Yellow leaves with green veins are not a hunger signal in the ordinary sense. That pattern is iron chlorosis, caused by the soil being too alkaline for the plant to take iron up, and more fertilizer makes it worse. The fix is to correct the pH, or to apply chelated iron as a stopgap while you do.
- Feed as flowering ends Scatter a granular ericaceous feed over the root zone, which extends roughly as far out as the branch tips, scratch it lightly into the surface and water it in. Keep it off the trunk.
- Mulch immediately afterwards Put the mulch on over the fed, watered soil. Doing it in this order means the feed is already in contact with the roots and the mulch holds the moisture that carries it down.
- Start the summer watering habit From the moment new leaves stop expanding and turn from pale to dark, treat the shrub as if it were flowering. This is bud set, and it is thirstier than the flowering season.
- Stop feeding by midsummer Any nitrogen after this point trades flower buds for soft leaves that frost will damage. If the plant looks pale late in the season, note it and feed earlier next year instead.
Camellias in pots need a different routine
A container camellia can flower superbly for years, but it fails faster and for more reasons than one in the ground. The root ball is shallow, the compost dries from the sides as well as the top, and there is no reservoir of soil to buffer a missed week. In hot weather a pot may need water daily, and a single dry spell in summer will cost you the following winter's flowers.
Use an acidic potting mix with added grit or bark for drainage, and pick a pot only one size up when you repot. Camellias resent being over-potted into a mass of cold wet compost they cannot fill. Repot every two to three years, in the period just after flowering, and top-dress in the years between.
Watch the weight of the pot rather than the surface of the compost. Peat-based and bark-based composts look damp on top long after the core has dried, and by the time the surface looks dry the root ball has already been stressed. Lifting the pot, or pushing a finger three inches (8 cm) down, tells you far more than the surface does.
What to record so next year makes sense
Because the cause and the symptom sit six months apart, memory is genuinely not good enough with camellias. Write down the date the flowers finish, the date the new growth hardens, and then keep a simple tally of how often you watered through the summer weeks. The following winter, the number of buds you get maps onto that tally with uncomfortable accuracy.
Add the position of each plant and how much direct sun it actually gets in midwinter, plus the date of any hard frost while buds were showing color. Two seasons of those notes separate the three causes of bud loss cleanly: a plant that always drops buds after a frost has an aspect problem, one that drops them in a still, mild winter had a dry summer, and one that never sets many buds at all is too shaded or being pruned too late.
Note the first date you see open flowers each year as well. Camellias are reliable enough that a flowering date shifting by more than a couple of weeks is a signal that something changed: more shade from a neighboring tree, a wetter or drier summer, or a plant that is starting to outgrow its pot.
