A dry-country plant with a deep root
Chickpeas evolved on the dry margins of the Fertile Crescent and they behave like it. The plant sends a taproot down three feet (90 cm) or more within the first two months, and once that root is established it finds water that shallow-rooted vegetables cannot reach. A chickpea bed that looks dry at the surface is very often not short of water at all, and the instinct to water it is the single most common way gardeners spoil the crop.
The visible plant is a low gray-green bush eighteen to twenty-four inches (45 to 60 cm) tall, with fine divided leaves and a great many small pale flowers that are easy to miss. It is self-pollinating, so there is nothing to do about pollination and no need for a second plant nearby. The whole plant, leaves and stems and pods, is covered in tiny glandular hairs, and those hairs are worth knowing about before you start handling the crop.
Those hairs exude an acid, mostly malic with some oxalic, strong enough to sting broken skin and to irritate anyone who works bare-armed through a row for long. It is harmless on intact skin in small amounts and it washes off, but it is the reason experienced growers touch this crop with gloves on and long sleeves, and the reason you never push through a chickpea row when it is wet, because the exudate dissolves in the water and coats everything it touches.
The acid is also why chickpeas rarely need slug or rabbit protection once past the seedling stage. Very little wants to eat the foliage, and the pests that do are specialists that ignore it.
Watering: two moments that matter and a long stretch that does not
Chickpeas need water at two points and are better off without it in between. The first is germination and establishment, the first three or four weeks, when the root is still shallow. The second is flowering and early pod fill, when a genuine drought will cause the plant to shed flowers and abort small pods. Between establishment and flowering, and again from the moment the pods have filled, the crop wants to be left dry.
The practical rule is to water deeply and rarely rather than lightly and often. If you water, put on an inch (25 mm) at once so it reaches down where the roots are, and then do not water again until the plant tells you to. Frequent shallow watering keeps the root system near the surface, which is exactly the opposite of what makes this crop drought-proof, and it keeps the canopy humid.
The plant does tell you. Chickpea leaflets fold upward along the midrib and the whole bush takes on a duller, bluer cast when it is genuinely short of water, and it recovers overnight if the shortage is mild. Folding in the heat of the afternoon that has reversed by morning is normal and needs no action. Folding that is still there at dawn, during flowering, is the one signal that justifies the hose.

Feeding a crop that makes its own nitrogen
Once nodules form on the roots, usually by the fourth or fifth week, the crop supplies its own nitrogen and any you add is worse than wasted. The symptom of an over-fed chickpea is unmistakable: a tall, dark green, soft plant that keeps making leaves, flowers late and sparsely, and falls flat across the path after the first heavy rain. That plant will give you a fraction of the pods a lean, tough, gray-green one gives.
If the crop is genuinely pale and stunted at the fourth to sixth week, pull one plant up and look at the roots before you reach for fertilizer. Pink or red inside the nodules means fixation is working and the paleness is something else, usually cold or waterlogging. White or empty nodules, or no nodules at all, mean the bacterial partner is absent, and in that case a light nitrogen feed is a rescue rather than a routine, and you inoculate the seed next time.
A dressing of compost before sowing covers phosphorus and potassium for the season on most garden soil. On very poor or sandy ground, a low-nitrogen feed high in potassium at the point when the first flowers open supports pod fill without pushing leaf growth.
Keeping the bush open and off the ground
Chickpeas do not climb and do not need canes, but a heavily podded bush leans outward and the lower pods end up lying on the soil, where they pick up rot and where you cannot see them at harvest. A single strand of string run down each side of the row at about twelve inches (30 cm), tied to stakes every few feet, holds the whole row upright for the cost of ten minutes.
Do not prune, pinch or thin the foliage. Every leaf is feeding pods and the wounds from cutting are entry points for ascochyta. If the row is too crowded, that was decided at sowing and the fix belongs to next year's spacing, not to pruners this year.
Keep the ground between rows weeded early and then stop. Chickpeas compete poorly with weeds for the first six weeks and then shade them out, but hoeing between the rows once the plants have met damages surface roots and knocks pods off. Weed thoroughly at three and six weeks, then leave the bed alone.
Never work in the row when the foliage is wet. Wet leaves spread ascochyta spores from plant to plant on your clothing faster than anything else in the garden does, and the leaf acid transfers to skin and fabric far more readily when there is water to carry it.
- Weed hard twice, then stop Hoe at about three weeks and again at six weeks. After the rows close over, hand-pull anything that matters and keep the hoe out of the bed.
- String the row before it needs it Put the stakes and string in when the plants are a foot (30 cm) tall. Doing it after they have flopped means walking in the row and breaking stems.
- Walk the row dry, in gloves Inspect in the afternoon once dew has gone. Gloves and long sleeves, both for the leaf acid and to avoid carrying spores along the row.
- Check the underside of the lower leaves fortnightly Ascochyta starts as small brown spots with dark rings low in the canopy. Finding it early is the only point at which you have options.
What to record while the crop is growing
Two dates carry most of the value: the date the first flower opens and the date you first see a pod that has visibly inflated. Together they tell you how the season is tracking against the dry window you were aiming at, and they are the numbers you will use to move next year's sowing earlier or later.
Also record every time you watered and why, because the honest answer at the end of most seasons is that at least half of it was unnecessary, and seeing that written down is what breaks the habit. Note whether the plants stayed gray-green and compact or went dark and soft, since that single observation explains most of the difference in yield between one year and the next.
