Shallow roots mean chives feel drought early
Chive roots sit in the top six inches (15 cm) of soil, which is where the ground dries first. That makes chives look tougher than they are: they will not die in a dry spell, they simply stop growing, the leaves go thin and slightly yellow at the tips, and the flavor turns harsh. Water is the single biggest factor in leaf quality.
In open ground, an inch (2.5 cm) of water a week through the growing season is enough. Give it in one soak rather than a daily sprinkle, because light watering only wets the surface and encourages the roots to stay even shallower. In containers, expect to water every day or two in summer heat, and check by weight rather than by looking at the surface.
- Soak after every hard cut A clump sheared to the base has to build a whole set of new leaves. Water it thoroughly the same day and the regrowth is fast and even; leave it dry and it stalls for weeks.
- Mulch around the clump An inch of compost or fine bark round the outside of the clump halves summer watering. Keep the mulch off the white bases themselves, which rot if buried.
- Water the soil, not the leaves Hollow leaves hold water in their crevices and stay wet for hours, which invites downy mildew. Direct the can at the base of the clump.
Yellowing tips in midsummer on a clump that has not been watered is drought, not disease. Soak it, shear it, and the regrowth comes back green.
Feeding a clump you keep cutting
Chives in poor soil survive but stay thin. A clump that is sheared three or four times a season is being asked to rebuild its entire leaf area each time, and that takes nitrogen. Feed in early spring as growth starts, and again after each full cut, and the difference in leaf thickness is obvious within a month.

Very high nitrogen gives you tall, floppy, pale leaves with weak flavor. Feed steadily rather than heavily; chives respond better to consistency than to strength.
Sun, shade and soil
Chives grow best in full sun, six hours or more, in soil that drains freely. They tolerate part shade better than most herbs, and in a hot climate afternoon shade actually improves them, but deep shade produces sparse, floppy leaves that fall over onto the soil and rot. Soil that stays waterlogged in winter is the one condition they genuinely will not take: the bulbs rot and the clump does not come back in spring.
- Improve drainage before planting On heavy clay, dig in grit and compost, or plant into a raised bed. It is far easier to fix this before the clump is in than to move an established one.
- Aim for a neutral soil Chives prefer a pH around 6.0 to 7.0. Very acid soil produces stunted clumps; a light dressing of garden lime in autumn corrects it over a season.
- Keep them out of a wind tunnel Hollow leaves snap and kink in strong wind and the damaged tips brown off. A spot with some shelter keeps the clump upright and neat.
Deadhead unless you want seedlings
Chive flowers are worth having: they are edible, they are among the earliest food for bees, and they look good. But every head that is left to dry sets a large amount of viable seed, and it drops straight into the surrounding soil. A single unpicked clump can produce dozens of seedlings in beds and paths the following spring.
The decision point is when the mauve color fades. Cut the heads off at the base then and you get all the benefit of the flowers with none of the seedlings. Leave them another two weeks until the heads turn papery and pale, and you have committed to volunteers.
- Shear the whole clump after flowering Rather than picking heads individually, cut the entire clump, flower stems and all, to two inches (5 cm) once flowering finishes. It deals with the seed and triggers a clean flush of new leaves.
- Pull the flower stems out of the harvest Solid flower stems are tough eating. Sort them out of the cut material rather than chopping them in.
- Leave one head if you want seed If you do want to raise new plants, let a single head ripen and collect the black seed over paper as the head opens. That is far more controllable than letting the whole clump shed.
Chives spread by seed, not by running roots. Unlike mint, the clump itself stays put; deadheading is all the containment they need.
Container growing
Chives do well in pots as long as the pot is big enough. A six to eight inch (15 to 20 cm) pot holds one clump comfortably; anything smaller dries out daily in summer and congests within a year. Use ordinary all-purpose potting mix rather than a very free-draining mix, and make sure the pot has drainage holes, because a waterlogged pot over winter kills the clump outright.

Do not shelter a pot from winter completely. Chives need cold to break dormancy properly, so leave the pot outside and simply keep it from sitting in standing water.
What is worth recording
Keep a note of when each clump first shows above ground in spring and when the flower buds appear. Those two dates barely move from year to year in the same position, and knowing them lets you plan the first cut and the post-flowering shear instead of reacting to them.
Record feeding dates too, and whether the clump was thin or thick that season. A clump that comes up thin two springs running, despite feeding, is telling you it needs dividing rather than more fertilizer, and the written record is what makes that pattern visible.
