Read the pattern before you treat anything
A conifer has a very limited vocabulary of symptoms. Mites, drought, wind, root rot and a severed root all produce brown foliage, and reaching for a spray without working out which one you have is usually wasted effort. Four questions separate most cases: where on the plant did it start, is it one side or all round, how quickly did it spread, and is the soil wet or dry at root depth.
Damage starting on the outer tips of the newest growth, on the side facing prevailing cold wind, appearing over a single hard winter, is wind scorch. Damage starting on the inner foliage and moving outward, on all sides, over one or two seasons, with wet soil, is root related. Damage that appears as a general dusty graying over the whole plant in hot dry weather is usually mites. Damage confined to one branch is a problem in that branch.
Speed matters too. A conifer that goes from green to brown across the whole plant in a matter of weeks in summer has almost always lost its roots, either to rot in wet ground or to physical severance from digging, trenching or a machine. A conifer that dulls slowly over two or three years has a chronic problem with drainage, planting depth or competition.

Mites and scale, the two most common pests
Spider mites thrive in hot, dry, still conditions, which makes conifers against a sunny wall and plants in containers the usual victims. They feed on the underside of foliage and drain the color out of it, so the first sign is a plant that looks dusty or bronzed rather than eaten. Hold a sheet of white paper under a shoot and tap it sharply; if fine specks fall and then start moving, you have mites.
The first and often sufficient treatment is water. A forceful spray directed into the foliage, repeated every three or four days through a hot spell, knocks populations down and raises the humidity they dislike. Do this in the morning so foliage dries. For serious infestations a horticultural oil or soap gives control, but coverage is what matters, and getting spray into a dense conifer is difficult, so several applications are usually needed.
Scale insects sit still on stems and older growth under a hard or waxy shell and excrete honeydew, which is why the first thing most people notice is stickiness or a black sooty film on the foliage below. The shell protects the adults from almost anything you spray, so timing matters: the vulnerable stage is the mobile crawler in early summer. Outside that window, pruning out the worst shoots and improving the plant's vigor is more effective than spraying.
Root rot and what makes a conifer vulnerable
Root rots take hold in soil that stays saturated, and once established they are almost never reversible in a conifer. The plant loses its fine roots, cannot take up water, and browns as if in drought while standing in wet ground. If you dig at the edge of the root plate and find dark, soft roots that slough their outer layer when pulled between finger and thumb, rather than firm pale roots, the diagnosis is made.
Prevention is the whole strategy. Never plant into ground that drains slower than about twelve hours in a test hole without raising the bed. Never plant deep. Never pile mulch or soil against the trunk, because a buried collar rots. Keep irrigation off the trunk and foliage and put it out at the root zone instead.
Where one plant in a row has failed, do not simply replant a conifer in the same hole. Whatever caused the failure, drainage, a buried service, compaction, is still there. Fix the condition, or plant something less demanding of drainage in that spot.
Keeping a record that pays for itself
Conifer problems unfold over years, and memory is a poor instrument at that timescale. Note each season which plant showed damage, which side of it, whether the foliage affected was old or new, and what the weather did in the weeks beforehand. Also note the date by season of any hard frost, drought or storm, and anything you did nearby: digging, laying a path, changing where water runs off.
The value shows the following year. Wind scorch repeats on the same side every hard winter and tells you exactly where a shelter screen belongs. Mite damage repeats in the same hot corner and tells you which plants to start hosing before the damage appears. Root problems correlate with the wet spot you did not notice because it only holds water for three days a year.
Photograph each significant plant from the same position once a season. A conifer changes too slowly to see, and a set of images taken from a fixed spot makes a slow decline obvious a year or two before it would otherwise be noticed, which is often the difference between fixing the cause and losing the plant.
