Conophytum Problems: Rot, Mealybugs, Scorch and Peeled Sheaths

Almost everything that goes wrong with these traces back to water at the wrong time of year, scorch from harsh sun, or pests hidden in the dense base of a clump. Peeling the dry sheath off is a self-inflicted one.

Work out which problem you have

The symptoms overlap, so start by placing the plant in the year. A shrunken, dull plant wrapped in papery skins during the hot months is healthy. The same plant in the middle of the cool growing season is not. Season narrows the possibilities faster than looking at the plant does.

Then check firmness. Squeeze a head gently between finger and thumb. A firm head, even a wrinkled one, has an intact root system and is fixable. A head that gives like a soft fruit has lost its base and will not recover, though the rest of the clump often can be saved if you act the same day.

Leave the papery sheath alone

As the growing season ends, the outer bodies dry down into a thin brown or white papery skin that wraps closely around the new heads underneath. It looks untidy, and the temptation to peel it away and reveal the fresh green plant beneath is very strong. Resist it completely. That sheath is the plant's protection through the whole hot rest, shading the new heads from sun, cutting water loss to a fraction, and keeping the surface dry.

Peeling it off early exposes soft, unpigmented tissue directly to the heat and light of the worst part of the year. The usual result is scorching within days, sometimes shriveling of the whole head, and at best a plant that goes into summer with no reserve. Plants stripped this way often fail to wake up at all in the autumn.

The sheath deals with itself. In some plants it splits open on its own as the new heads swell at the wake-up; in others it persists for a season or more and simply builds up as layers around the base, which is normal and harmless. If a loose fragment is genuinely hanging free and comes away with no resistance at all, removing that is fine. Anything that has to be pulled stays where it is.

The one exception is a sheath that has become wet and is staying wet against the plant, which can happen if a resting plant was rained on or splashed. In that case ease the sodden material away with tweezers, dry the plant in moving air and shade, and accept that the head underneath may mark.

Rot is the only real emergency

Rot in this genus moves through the woody base of a clump rather than staying in one head, which is why a plant can look mostly fine one week and be gone the next. It almost always begins with water applied while the plant was resting, a mix that has broken down and stays wet, or a body buried too deep at the last repot. Once you see brown softness, the clock is running.

Work dry and be ruthless. Anything that is soft is already lost, and the aim is to get clean tissue away from it rather than to save a particular head.

  1. Turn the plant out and look at the base Take the whole plant out of its pot dry and clear the mix from the crown. Rot that is visible on the surface is usually much further advanced underneath, and you cannot judge it from above the grit.
  2. Cut back to clean tissue With a sterile blade, cut away every soft or discolored part, taking off whole heads if the base beneath them is affected. Wipe or re-sterilize the blade between cuts so you do not carry infection into clean wood. Keep cutting until every surface you expose is firm and pale.
  3. Dry the survivors in open air Leave the cleaned pieces on a dry surface in shade with air moving around them for three to seven days, until every cut has sealed to a dry skin. Do not dust them with anything or wrap them; open air does the job.
  4. Repot into fresh dry mix and wait Pot the survivors into fresh gritty mix in a clean pot and do not water for at least a week, longer if the pieces lost most of their roots. Then water only if the plant is in its growing season. If it is resting, keep it dry until the wake-up.

Pests, and where they hide

The dense clump structure that makes a mature conophytum attractive is also a perfect hiding place, and pests are usually found late. Get into the habit of parting the heads and looking at the base whenever you water in the growing season, and of inspecting the roots at every repot.

Mealybugs are the main problem and come in two forms: the visible kind that sits in the crevices between heads as white cotton, and the root kind that lives in the mix and shows only as white waxy deposits on the roots and inner pot wall. The root form is the reason an apparently healthy plant can decline steadily with no visible cause.

Treat at the first sign rather than waiting. A systemic drench applied during the growing season, when the roots are active enough to take it up, is far more effective than anything sprayed on a resting plant. Repeat treatments matter because eggs hatch after the first application.

Light damage, and the record that stops a repeat

Scorch is caused by change rather than by absolute intensity, and it happens almost entirely at two moments: when a plant is moved into stronger light, and when the sun climbs at the turn of the season while the plant stays where it is. The mark starts as a dull whitened patch and dries into a sunken scar that remains for the life of that head. The plant is not in danger, but the damage does not heal.

Stretching is the opposite failure and equally permanent for the affected heads. Once a head has elongated it stays that shape; only the heads formed under better light in the next cycle come out compact. This is why light problems have to be caught in weeks rather than months.

Keep a short log of exactly this: the date of any move, the date a symptom appeared, and what the weather was doing. Most losses in this genus come down to a change made at the wrong point in the year, and a record that pairs the change with the symptom converts a mystery into a rule you will not break again. Note the first date you stopped watering and the first date a sheath formed as well, because those two dates predict when the plant becomes vulnerable to heat and to any water it should not be getting.
