Bright, but not the full brutal sun
This is the point where conophytum and the more famous living stones part company. Both want a lot of light, but conophytum come from places where they sit in rock crevices, under overhangs and in the lee of larger stones, shaded from the fiercest hours and cooled by the airflow that moves through broken ground. Give one the same unshaded southern glass that suits a lithops all summer and you will get bleached patches on the shoulders within days.
The target is bright light with direct sun at the start and end of the day and diffusion through the harshest part. An east-facing window, an unshaded window that gets sun until late morning, or a spot a foot back from strong glass all work well. Under cover outdoors, roughly thirty to fifty percent shade cloth over the hottest hours gives the same effect and produces the best plants most people ever grow.
Too little light shows up as elongation. The bodies stretch upward and lose the tight, rounded shape, the surface pattern flattens out, and a clump that should be a dense cushion becomes a loose collection of pale columns leaning apart. Unlike a soft leaf, that stretch never contracts again; you only get a correct shape back when the next season's heads form under better light.

Moving a plant into brighter light safely
Scorch on these plants is almost always caused by a change rather than by an absolute level of light. A plant that has spent the summer in shade, or one that has just arrived from a grower's shaded bench, has no protective pigment built up and burns in a couple of hours of unfiltered sun. The same plant, moved gradually, will happily take considerably more light a month later.
The moment of greatest risk is the wake-up at the end of the hot season, when people move plants back into the light and start watering in the same week. Separate the two changes so that if something goes wrong you know which one caused it.
- Add early sun first Give two or three hours of direct sun early in the day and diffuse light for the rest. Hold that for about a week. Early sun carries far less heat than the same duration later on, so the plant builds tolerance without cooking.
- Extend gradually over two to three weeks Lengthen the direct exposure a little every few days. Check the upper surfaces each morning; the first sign of trouble is a dull, slightly whitened patch that has not yet dried out. Pull the plant back a step if you see one and it will usually recover without a scar.
- Watch for the color to deepen Plants adapting to more light darken and their markings sharpen. That pigment is the plant's own sunscreen. Once it appears you can hold the plant at that exposure through the cool growing season without further care.
- Back off again before the heat returns Light levels that are perfect in the cool months become excessive once the sun is high and the air is hot. Add shading or move the plant back from the glass as the season turns rather than after the first burn appears.
Never move a plant into stronger light and water it on the same day. One change at a time keeps the cause of any damage obvious, and both changes stress a plant that has just come out of rest.
Heat, cold and moving air
Heat is the factor people underestimate. A conophytum resting through the hot months does not need warmth and does not benefit from it. Above roughly 90F (32C), and especially where a pot sits against hot glass, the shallow root zone can climb well beyond what the plant tolerates, and a dry plant that cooks slowly will simply fail to wake up in the autumn. Pull pots back from hot glass and keep them where air moves.
Cold is far less of a threat, provided the plant is dry. An established plant kept bone dry through winter shrugs off nights down to about 40F (4C) without harm, and cool nights during the growing season are exactly what produce compact growth and good flowering. What kills is cold combined with wet, so if a cold snap is coming during the growing months, simply skip that week's watering.
Airflow matters more than for most succulents because these are grown in dense clumps where the bases stay hidden. A closed terrarium or a cloche traps humidity around those bases and produces rot and fungus gnats within weeks. An open shelf with a window ajar nearby, or a small fan in a grow tent, is enough to keep the surface of the grit and the necks of the plants dry between waterings.
How the position changes across the year
In the cool growing months, give the plant everything the position can offer short of harsh midday sun. This is when the heads are forming and flowering, and light during that stretch decides whether the clump is tight and well-colored or loose and pale. If the brightest window you have cannot deliver three or four hours of direct sun in midwinter, a grow light run twelve to fourteen hours a day at six to twelve inches (15 to 30 cm) above the plants closes the gap.
Through the hot rest, the priority reverses: the plant needs shade from the worst of the sun, coolness and air movement, and no water at all. It does not need darkness, and putting it in a cupboard for the summer is a mistake, because the plant still respires and needs air and some light to come out of rest in good condition. A shaded, airy corner of the same shelf is right.
What to record about position
Position is the variable people change without noticing and then cannot reconstruct a year later. Write down where each pot sits, which way the window faces, and roughly how many hours of direct sun it genuinely receives, measured once by watching rather than guessed. Note the date you moved anything and the date any bleached patch appeared, because the gap between the two tells you how fast that plant can be moved next time.
Record positions plant by plant rather than for the whole collection. Two pots a foot and a half (45 cm) apart on the same sill can differ by two hours of sun, and when one clump stretches and its neighbor stays tight, that note is the only thing that explains it.
