Overview
Painted Mountain is an open-pollinated flour corn that Dave Christensen bred in Montana over some 30 years, selecting from hundreds of Native American and pioneer corns to get something that ripens in the cold, short seasons above 5,000 feet. It tolerates light frost, cold soil and nights, wind, heat and drought, and can be sown right at the last frost. Plants are short at about 5 feet with 6 to 8 inch ears of 8 rows in gold, orange, red, purple and blue, sometimes graded like a rainbow on one ear. The soft starch kernels grind into sweet-flavored flour, work for hominy or parching, and can even be eaten fresh. Maturity is 65 to 85 days.
