Powdery mildew is the one that ends the season
White dusty patches on the upper surfaces of the lower leaves, spreading upward until the whole plant looks gray and the leaves go crisp and brown, is powdery mildew, and on cornflower it is close to inevitable in the second half of summer. It will not kill a plant outright but it takes the leaves out from the bottom up, stops the plant branching, and brings the flowering season to an early close. The plants most affected are always the crowded ones, the fed ones and the ones in still air against a wall or fence.
The conditions it wants are warm days, cool nights and humid still air, which describes late summer in most gardens. Note that unlike downy mildew it does not need the leaves to be wet, though wet foliage certainly does not help. The practical response is nearly all preventative: space the plants properly at thinning, do not feed, water at the base and in the morning, and pick off the first affected lower leaves as soon as you see them rather than waiting until half the plant is gray.
Once it is established across a stand, the honest answer is to cut your losses. Shear the plants back by a third to a half, clear the fallen leaves away from the base rather than leaving them to mulch down, and see whether a clean second flush comes. If the plants are already tired, pull them and put them in the bin rather than the compost pile. A stand that has mildewed badly is not worth nursing through to autumn.

Blackfly cluster in exactly one place
Cornflower attracts black bean aphid heavily, and it always goes to the same spot: the top two or three inches (5 to 8 cm) of the stem, immediately below the developing bud. Colonies build up fast in warm weather, coat the stem so densely that it looks black, distort the bud so it opens crooked or not at all, and leave sticky honeydew on the leaves below that goes on to grow black sooty mold.
Because the colonies are so localised they are easy to deal with by hand. Run finger and thumb up the stem and squash the lot, or knock them off with a jet of water from a hose, holding the stem with your other hand so it does not snap. Do it every two or three days for a fortnight rather than once thoroughly, since a handful of survivors rebuilds the colony in a week. Check the stems every time you go round to deadhead; the two jobs fall on the same schedule.
Do not reach for a spray. Cornflower is one of the best plants in the garden for hoverflies, bees and ladybirds, and the aphid colonies themselves are what draws the predators in. Given a fortnight, ladybird larvae usually clear a patch on their own. Spraying kills the predators along with the aphids and leaves you doing it every week for the rest of the summer. If the petals are going anywhere near the kitchen, spraying is off the table anyway.
- Check the stem tips whenever you deadhead Look at the two or three inches (5 to 8 cm) directly below each bud. That is where the colonies start, and they are much easier to deal with in the first few days.
- Squash the colony by hand or knock it off with water Support the stem with one hand so it does not break. A firm jet of water is enough; aphids knocked to the ground rarely climb back up the plant.
- Repeat every two or three days for a fortnight One thorough treatment never finishes it. Survivors rebuild a full colony within a week, so the repetition is what actually works.
- Leave the predators alone Ladybird larvae, which look like small spiky gray and orange grubs, and hoverfly maggots clear aphids faster than you can. Do not spray, and do not remove them with the aphids.
- Wash off the sticky residue Hose down leaves left coated in honeydew, or the black sooty mold that grows on it will shade the leaf. The mold itself does no direct harm and washes off.
Cornflower is worth keeping in a vegetable garden partly for this reason. It draws aphids to itself and then draws in the ladybirds and hoverflies that go on to work through the rest of the beds.
Falling over is the biggest problem, and it is not a disease
More cornflower is ruined by collapse than by everything else combined. A stand that has been flattened by rain or wind never recovers its shape: the stems kink at the base, turn up from wherever they landed, and every flower after that is on a bent stem. On the ground the lower foliage stays permanently damp, which is a direct invitation to mildew and stem rot, and the plant stops branching properly, so the season shortens as well.
The three causes are all within your control. Rich soil produces long soft stems, so do not feed and do not mulch with rich compost. Crowding draws the plants up thin, so thin properly at the seedling stage. And late support cannot be retrofitted, so put netting or twiggy branches in while the plants are around a foot (30 cm) tall rather than waiting for a reason. An autumn-sown plant is much larger and much heavier and needs all three handled more carefully than a spring-sown one.
If a stand does go down, do not try to lift and tie the whole thing upright; you will snap most of it. Instead cut out the worst-bent stems entirely at the base, prop the remainder loosely with twigs pushed in on the leaning side, and clear any foliage that is lying flat on wet soil. You will get less out of the plant than you would have done, but you will avoid the rot that follows a soaking mat of leaves.
Record the first date you saw each problem
The note worth keeping is the date you first saw mildew, the date you first saw blackfly, and the date anything fell over, along with which part of the garden it happened in. Those first-appearance dates repeat closely from year to year in the same garden, and once you have them written down you stop reacting and start pre-empting: netting goes in two weeks before last year's collapse, and you start checking stem tips a fortnight before last year's first aphids.
Note the growing conditions alongside them. A stand that mildewed early in one bed and stayed clean in another usually differs in airflow, spacing or how much compost went on the ground, and the pattern only shows up over two or three seasons of notes. Photographs of the first affected leaves are useful too, because early powdery mildew, early rust and simple leaf spotting from splashing are easy to confuse in the moment and quite distinct side by side.
